Official for tomorrow now. I am "probably" getting the DX2 (well, I did order the super $20 dock & stuff deal), but will still test the Rev. There IS a method to my non-4G madness and will post once I get more info.

Rev seems a much better alternative to the TB and Charge, in SPITE of Bing.

Verizon's LG Revolution launches May 26th for $249.99

added:

Going to the store today to check er' out.

added 2:

Never mind. The manager is not in today, but the Rev will be out tomorrow.

I would like to know you're method, sounds like you got some inside info

I want to know b/c I'm not crazy about any of these 4g phones and would love to hang on to my DInc as long as possible

The reason most want to upgrade is to lock in another 2yrs of unlimited data. My plan has been up for renewal since August 2009.

Time to pick a replacement for this Eris.

The specs make me suspicious that this is going to be nothing more than a sequel to the Thunderbolt, in the same way that Transformers 2 was the sequel to Transformers 1.

It's pretty much the Thunderbolt with less RAM and a slightly bigger battery.
I predict slightly better battery life will be the only benefit of this phone.

It's not worth it. I'd rather pay the same for a Thunderbolt w/ extended battery.

It has better screen than Tolt and also HDMI out/mirror that's not in Tbolt. Though the spec is similar to Tbolt, I bet its battery performance will be at least 50% better than Tbolt. LG handles power management way better than HTC even with similar spec (from better chipset board, driver optimization, etc).

The Thunderbolt only has 2GB of internal memory. The Revolution has 12GB.

That is a HUGE difference. And since most applications do not support being moved to an installed microSD card, internal memory is very important to power users (I've already used over 2GB of storage space on my Moto D2).

My big questions are how much will we be able to make this a more "Google"-centric device vs. Bing, and does it have Gorilla Glass?

It should be possible to replace Bing with Google as Fascinate users learned. Removing Bing completely from the phone would require rooting, which should be possible too as LG doesn't put any restriction for rooting.

Regardless if you buy a 3G or 4G phone, it is the SAME contract and that is what counts. I had gotten this general idea from a VZW rep and tested in theory:

1. Go to VZW and choose to upgrade. When you get to phone features it shows the same web package, regardless of 3G or 4G ( I used the DX2 and Charge).

2. VZW also confirmed this.

Could it still be wrong and we get $crewed regardless- maybe, but the contract lists the same thing, so if we are going by contract for the grandfathering premise- should be okay with a 3G or 4G device.

I bought the DX2 and posted a review in the DX2 thread, but will still check the Rev out.

Depends how the Rev internal was mapped. If like the DX2 (which has about 6gb, but some taken by bloat), the internal will be mapped as the "sdcard" and your premise is correct.

If mapped like the Incredible, the internal is media-only space and the real microsd is the space for any apps2sd or data being pushing by apps.

Bing can be tamed- I was wrong it was heavily integrated in the UI. In fact, per a VZW friend who did the Rev training last week, the LG rep admitted they did not want it either, but VZW wanted it on the Rev. The rep even explained that you can install Google search and then get around Bing.

Still, in order for the Rev to get updates, Bing/MS also has to be part of the process for the updates (this means one more hand in the update process).

And that to me is a major Handicap! One more hand in order to get updates is a major problem. Seriously I just don't get it! The phone is about android, why on earth would vzw keep putting Bing on a Google centric phone...its just plain dumb IMO. Whoever struck that deal for vzw to make Bing the search engine on Any of they're phones, especially Android phones, should be smacked...very hard...lol.

I will probably go with Revolution if its battery is not horrible like Tbolt, it can maintain stable reception under 3G mode and no other major issue pops up.

The 4G issue for grandfathering was my main trump for the Rev, but once discovered 3G & 4G devices have been and are still being contracted with the same plans, it was an easy choice for me (well, that and no 4G around me for awhile).

I hope the Rev works out well for you and everybody else! :)

Thanks. I will closely watch initial reviews (both pro and normal users) for first a few weeks before pulling trigger on it. Also I will put it through testing myself for first week on getting it. I have DX2 in mind just in case of returning Revolution and skipping first wave of LTE phones. Hope that doesn't happen. DX2 seems to have its own share of initial bugs from what I see on DX2 forum. Seems like no phone is perfect.

If you look under account features you will see that lte is an account feature. Just because the contracts are the same does not mean that they are going to grandfather you into an unlimited lte plan from unlimited 3g. Once they move to tiered unless you have unlimited data and lte under account features it I doubt you will be able to obtain it.

The reason Verizon is including bing on some of the phones released today is just advertising. Microsoft is trying to make bing just as big as google. Microsoft is giving verizon a ton of money to put bing on phones. The brower will be defaulted to bing and so will everything else. Sure you can install google over top of bing but it just takes bloat to a whole new level. I would never buy a bing phone just because if verizon sees that consumers are still willing to buy phones with bing they will never stop. Personally I don't see what is so good about this device. I have used lg stuff and the past and its been mostly low end garbage with design flaws. Add bing into it and now we have a big loser.

I would have been all for giving lg a second chance with this device as I have done for samsung after some of the trash they have put out and same with motorola. I was actually excited to see this phone but bing is the bigest problem with this phone.

I was given a Fascinate refurb in exchange for my Droid x I was having problems with. Even after running a debloated rom there were still signs of bing in the device such as the brower. Hitting search in the browser will do the search through bing.

so you're banking on being grandfathered into 4g from your 3g device?

It seems most if not all of my issues were self inflicted by restoring with Titanium using my Incredible backup. It appears some apps were best to start fresh, rather than from another devices app data. I knew not to install system data, but forgot that Blur and Sense may have some app data issues.

IMO, the DX2 rocks, but I, do expect a bug or two. The Incredible was infested at launch.

BTW, I am swyping this post on the DX2. Swype is integrated well and includes the microphone key :)

Battery seems very good, so far.

Understand yours were not bugs. But facebook contact issue looks like real bug. And I saw a few others too. Yeah, they are mostly minor so far, not deal breakers.

Revolution seems to be getting a lot of trash talks, hates on other forums, IT news medias. It mainly comes down the three things.

1. It got Bing.
2. Last year's spec.
3. It's LG.

1. I would say "So what?". You don't have to use it if you don't like it. You can add Google search, map to it and use them instead of Bing. And I do searches mostly inside the browser, so it doesn't matter much to me anyway. Also it's not impossible to root Revolution to remove it and other bloatwares.

2. Tbolt also received similar criticism like "it's another Evo with only WiMax replaced to LTE". But that didn't stop it from selling a lot despite its other shortcomings. Spec wise it looks similar to Tbolt, but it has HDMI, DLNA and arguably better screen, battery. Quadrant score around 2000 is no slouch either despite being single core. There will be long wait for dual core/LTE phone to come as it's serious challenge for battery, form factor, etc.

3. LG is larger company than HTC, Motorola but smaller than Samsung. They were off to slow start on android last year, but now getting their acts together with huge technical, financial resources. So this year we are seeing impressive line of high end phones like 2X, Black, Revolution and 3D soon. 2X was first Tegra2 dual core phone and Optimus 3D will be even more powerful with OMAP4 + dual channel memory. There is also rumor that Google is working with them for Nexus 3.

The LG reps were afraid of the Bing thing, but got some $ from VZW to compensate and of course MS gave big $ to VZW. Pretty bad when an OEM knows it will hurt sales, but are forced to do it anyway.

I will check the Rev out today. Summary of issues reported so far:

1. Apparently runs very warm using 4G
2. Not as bad with battery as the TB, but not as good as the Charge
3. Signal reception for 4G MAY be weaker than some other recent devices and 1X & 3G are weaker than the DX2.
4. Wifi is apparently pretty good
5. Build is good
6. Generally fast, but can get laggy (I think this can be said for ALL Android devices, to some degree, as far as the laggy part).

The biggest conflict appears to be the display. Some like it, some hate it. The grainy comments and poor definition comments by BGR seemed odd. I did not notice this, but only saw two screens.

Will check later.
