Looking to buy a G1- have a few questions

I'm looking to possibly get a G1 and have the following questions. The local T-mo authorized dealers in my area are horrible- I've been to 3 of them, two actual T-mo stores, and a variety of electronics stores that don't sell T-mobile. It's hard to find these things. I've been getting conflicting information and even though I tell them I'm looking to buy a G1, it's been difficult to see a working model and not a fake model. I have a better chance of asking for nude pics of their mom than to see an actual working G1. Anyways, since I didn't get any help there, I figure people here might know a thing or two about the G1. :D

1) I want the white one- is there any truth to the paint flaking or chipping? Or was this issue solved?

2) The $25 T-mo data plan includes 400 text messages, picture messages, IM, e-mails. So does this mean each time I get a email on my gmail account I get charged? One sales rep said, yes- you get an e-mail and that counts against the 400 messages. When I told him that was surprising since it had unlimited data, he then said of course it didn't count because you would be using the internet while giving me a bit of attitude with it.

3) I've read a lot about the GPS not working, or it taking too long. Can you turn off the GPS and just use cell towers to approximate your location? And how long does it take to lock into your location using the cell towers?

4) Is there an option for the browser to resize the webpage to the G1's screen size when it first loads up instead of the full size? Or is there another web broswer than can do this?

1) While I don't have a white one personally, I've not heard of (m)any issues with the White versions paint chipping. However, the keyboard lights up the same color as the keys - Bugs some people, doesn't bug others. I'm sure some of the people around here with the white version will share their two cents. :)

2) I can't speak to that, as I don't have a plan.

3) The GPS (can) take a long time, depending on where you are and if you have a clear view of the sky and such. Yes, you can choose whether to use wifi/cell towers, GPS satellites, or both. Can't really speak much about the GPS lock times, as I don't use it often.

4) The default browser no, you can zoom in/out and pan around/magnify with the (???) tool though. Maybe Steel can, but I'm not really sure.

Sorry for the post full of "no idea", but that's all I've got :)

Thanks for the replies!

Can the cell tower method lock into your location quickly?

I'll jump in for #2 and just let you know that emails do NOT count against your text count. Just SMS and MMS. And as for #4 Opera Mini renders the pages really well. Maybe that would work for you.
Oh thanks, that makes sense regarding the e-mails, yeah, in that case the $25 plan is the way to go for me...

How have the updates improved the g1? Most of the reviews I've read where when it first came out and a lot of the reviews were mixed and most of them said it was beta. With the updates, do you think the g1 has improved?

I think the updates have improved the G1 quite a bit. The difference in battery life from RC28 to RC33 is huge, and things are steadily improving.

Of course, YMMV.

I'm looking into buying one too. The only thing that's stopping me is I'm not sure if they're gunna come out with another android phone soon. I've seen the "G2", but I don't like it, it doesn't have a full keyboard. Should I just grow a pair and get the g1?

Even if you don't like the Magic, it's going to be coming to the US hopefully soon. If you have a chance, go into a T-Mo store and play around with the G1 and see if you like it.

It's really a matter of whether you want a qwerty keyboard or not at this point. :)

Would the G2 have any major advantages over the G1? Even if it did, it would have to be really cool, because I hate touch screen keyboards. Going to a tmobile store is a good idea, I think I'll go check it out. Oh yeah, does it have a headphone jack?

Thinner, lighter, a pinch more internal memory, and according to the FCC approved G2, it's got a 5.0MP camera. No 3.5mm jack.

HTC G2 with 3G and UMA gets the FCC rubber stamp of approval : Boy Genius Report

Assuming the cupcake keyboard is ready and will not make beta testers out of G2 owners. Forgive me for being cynical, but I'm waiting until I hear good things on that before I get a G2.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned. Any instant messages count as an SMS.

Thanks for the info Swizz! I'm fine with texting and I don't even do that much.

Oh, another important difference between the G1 and the G2 is the battery (according to the HTC website):
The G1 has a Li-ion 1150mAh
The G2 has a Li-ion 1340mAh

So hopefully between the cupcake update and this new battery, battery life will be acceptable.

This is false, or at the very least, misleading.

If you use the native IM client
AND
You send an IM via Yahoo!, MSN, or AIM.

Then yes, they uses SMS Protocols to relay the IM. Thus, those IMs are counted as SMS.

Google Chat does NOT use SMS protocols, it uses data.

You can avoid using up SMS by simply downloading one of the free apps on the market like Meebo or Hello AIM. Neither uses SMS protocols to relay IMs.

It is neither false, nor misleading. Regardless if there are applications available that do not use SMS protocols, the fact remains that the majority of the default IM applications and the most popular ones, to boot, still use an SMS to IM people. It is a fair warning to anyone who may be considering using the programs on a limited data plan. And even if Hello AIM and Google Talk do not use an SMS, what about MSN or Yahoo?

Swizz, I was being nice, but you were being false and misleading.

You said:

GoogleTalk is an IM client, and does not count as an SMS. Therefore use of the word ANY is false and misleading. Had you used the word "MOST" you would've been completely fine. Using the word "ANY" indicates that ALL IMs use SMS and that is absolutely untrue. GoogleTalk does not. Apps such as Meebo (which connects to AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, MySpace, ICQ and a few others) only uses data.

In addition to Meebo, there are free apps that can be downloaded that also do not use SMS:

Hello Yahoo

Hi AIM

Hi MSN

BuddyMob

Palringo Instant Messaging

Goojet

So no, it is NOT true that Any Instant messages count as SMS.

I'm all for giving people a heads up, but a "fair warning" is worthless if it's not accurate.

This is VERY good to know. Thanks for clearing this up:D
