Root Rooting questions on Ally

I tried to root my phone with Z4root. I does not seem to work. Lurking around on here I bvelieve it may have to do with my pnone having the 2.2.2 update? It also appears that there may not be any custom roms for this ver of Android (buglessbeast), don't know if the overclocked speed (800mhz) will work on my Ally)? Wondering how I may return my phone to 2.2.1 so I can root , then switch to a custom ROM (either Frunisher 1.0, or Velocity 1.1)that will work with this pnone. Any help greatly appreciated!

I believe you can use GingerBreak to root 2.2.2, someone may want to verify however

Will work though it's based on 2.2.1, it's a massive upgrade over stock 2.2.2. Velocity 1.2 will be based on 2.2.2 though no release date is available yet.

I did get my phone rooted, then installed ROM manager. If I try to reboot into manual recovery mode it just boots back up. I have also tried to install ROM from SD and it reboots back up without flashing. I did select the wipe Dalvik Cache, wipe data & cache, but will not flash, just boots back up regular. I was able to back up my current ROM. Might need to reinstall ROM manager not sure, any ideas?

Rom manager is notorious for failing at flashing recovery, try flashing the recovery 3-5 times thru rom manager before you try rebooting into it.

I screwed up once and ended up at the blue fastboot screen where I loaded a custom recovery to flash new roms. I would follow the guide as its the best way just follow the rom link and they should have a link to the guide. I don't know what would happen if you lost recovery and messed the rom up with no fastboot

Many thanks! Finally got it figured out thanks to all your help! Now maybe I won't want to throw my phone at a brick wall!

I had always been hesitant to root my phone now I am wishing I would have a long time ago, with all the bloatware that I never used gone, I have over 70mb free and now I have room to install the twitter app that has been too big to install...

Yes In order to get fast boot you must root the hard way 1 time.
After that it doesnt matter. You will always retain fastboot afterwards.

This phone is really running sweet now!

I am getting a system update notification in the status bar, I am thinking it's for the 2.2.2 update, ...do I dare run this, or do I ignore it. If I am to ignore it, is there anyway to stop the notification from popping up?

Let it download and try to install, itll go away for a while but will come back. If you are runnin velocity the next update will rid you of the notification. If youre stock you should have just installed it before you rooted.

Yes, I forgot to update my signature. I am now running rooted ver 2.2.1 and velocity 1.1. If I understand you correctly I should go ahead with the system update?

Yupp, if you want. it wont install. It will just get rid of the notification for a day or 2. I dont bother with it. I dont want 12mb wasted in my cache and i dont want to keep redownloading something ill never use and waste battery. I just leave the notification up there. Itll be over soon enough with velocity 1.2 and that one notification doesnt bother me any

Okay, so being brand new to android, I did what my phone told me and updated to 2.2.2. I'm semi overwhelmed with all the new terminology and options out there, so looking for some clarification before I go and tinker and brick my phone.

Do I need to roll back to 2.2.1 first?

I should find resources to manually root fastboot?

Then install gingerbreak so I can root Velocity? This will allow me to OC the Ally and remove the bloat?


Edit: just saw a video on Youtube about installing velocity just using rom manager. Is this advised, seemed a lot simpler than I was expecting.

I wouldn't use rom manager because it has the clockwork mod recovery and is not recommended if your flashing to velocity.velocity uses amon ra recovery and its best to a recovery that your rom uses and was made with. If you follow the guide, you will be satisfied i promise..
