DROIDX Gingerbread Update

We were told earlier in the week by Verizon that the DROIDX Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update would start rolling out today, but it appears now as if only members of the “soak test” through Motorola’s support forums will see it initially. We had assumed that the soak would have started days ago to test and prepare for the mass update which would start today, so this is a little surprising. And of course, there is that chance soak test members are just being grouped together with non-soak test members, and the rollout will happen as planned to a bunch of you throughout the weekend.

Here are a couple of notes from Motorola about the GB update:

The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning. West Coast members and night owls may be up to see it.

It’s a good idea to keep your phone charged if possible and plugged in overnight. You don’t have to keep it on, but you can.

If you are rooted, you must flash back to the standard Droid X software to receive the update. (Even then we can’t guarantee the update will work.)

Interesting little note there about being rooted. I would hope that anyone running leaked software would know by now that you would need to roll back in order to accept it. I’ll point out again though that we’re hearing awful things about root with this update. If you want to stay rooted going forward, you might want to wait until the devs have a few days to crack on this thing. Would hate to see all of you hoping to be on “official” software and not see root for the rest of your device’s life.

Wait so if I am rooted and overclocked on. 340 but everything else is still stock will I have to sbf in order to get the update?

I would imagine no. I just found the .apk's on the internet for the blockbuster and madden apps and re-installed them. Then unfroze everything, set it back to stock voltage and processor speed, then un-rooted. We will find out if that works haha.

I'm completely unfamiliar with sbf so i probably didn't help with my answer haha.

Honestly, it seems to be a guessing game right now as to how "stock" you have to be. The consensus seems to be un-rooted Froyo with all of Verizon's bloatware. Not sure if you have to SBF back, but that seems to be the favorite bet if you want the OTA update. If not, don't worry and root happy.

BTW: I ended up SBFing back, however that's just me.

I received all the ota's, most of them when I was rooted and at least the last one while overclocked. The main requirement is to have bloat installed properly.

OTOH, do you guys really want the OTA when you can get a rooted version from TBH? I believe they promised that this weekend as well.

You should also wait for them to make a SBF available as well. :D

you should be fine if you're rooted...but you have to have ALL of the original components of Froyo installed, working, present, unfrozen, unrenamed etc...

+1 to this (my opinion, obviously :p). The reason I think this is rational is that the OTA updates are just that, updates. What I mean is that the usually look for the presence of things that are expected to be updated, and don't (hopefully!) look for extra things like the su program, the SuperUser.apk, and busybox and all its associated symlinks. That's not to say that "they" (the Man) hasn't made their update scripts more sophisticated... But I do think that its likely that if you still have all the original "parts" in place, the OTA would work (if you let it).

My X is stock Froyo, but "simply" rooted (no bloatware removed or frozen). I'll let you know if I get the OTA notification (but I really do want to stay rooted one way or another).

Cheers!
