Root Disaster help Please! RESOLVED

Hi All,
I rooted my phone and downloaded a lot of apps including "Titanium Backup Pro ". I mistakenly reset my phone by stupidly hitting a "recover" setting in a quick shut down and reboot app (can't remember the exact name of the app) so it appears I lost everything including all my contacts. I am starting to re-download all the apps I purchased from the market. I have reinstalled "Titanium Backup Pro ". Can anyone tell me how to use it to restore everything including my contacts? Since I reinstalled "Titanium Backup Pro " it indicates there are no backups done yet but I had been backing up and saving to my sd card and dropbox. Can anyone guide me as to how to install the data that was backed up? It would be a wonderful miracle if I can simply restore the phone to how it was yesterday.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

contacts will resync with goggle. check the backup directory if you made custom.

Thanks daveman but I never set up sync with google. I not only want my contacts restored but my apps and phone settings as well. I think that was what "Titanium Backup Pro " was doing. It has made backups but since I had to reinstall, it doesn't see it's own backups. The backups are on my sd card and in my dropbox, (I also downloaded the dropbox backups to my computer). I don't know what to do next. I'm very new at this and appreciate all your help.

Contact syncing is automatic. If you login to your phone, your contacts be backed up/restored. You have to intentionally turn it off.

If you changed the backup folder in TBP, make sure you put the settings back to that folder upon reinstall. It won't search your SD card for backups on it's own. You'll also have to turn the dropbox setting back on and put in your account info if you haven't already. For future reference (in case you didn't do it), TBP has an option to back up it's own settings to a fixed location on the SD card. It's a good idea to use this so it automatically knows what do do when reinstalled.

Thank you for the reply. I have pointed TBP to my backup folder on my sd card but it just freezes. As it stands now TBP says it has no backups of my apps. I didn't even try to bring dropbox back into the mix as I know all my data is on my sd card. I have another app that backsup my contacts (Lookout) so I think I'll be able to restore them from there. But TBP was backing up all my apps and settings and contacts so I was hoping for one simple solution. I'm stumped.

If your contacts haven't restored themselves just from logging into the phone with your Google account, that might mean the setting has somehow been disabled. Contacts -> Menu -> Accounts -> ***[at]gmail.com should say "Sync is ON", for future reference. You can also see them by visiting http://contacts.google.com/

Strange that TBP is giving you such a headache. I'm also stumped. Many others and I haven't encountered such an issue, at least not in these forums. I've read elsewhere that sometimes different versions may encounter issues, but I doubt that you've done that unless TBP is also from the market. If so, the new version is having issues and you'll have to wait for them to be fixed. I'd say see if the drop box saves work.

Once again thank you for your reply. I purposely did not want to sync my contacts with the Google account associated with my phone so that has never been the issue, I'm sorry I wasn't clearer. Here's what happened (I'm a terrible writer so please keep that in mind):

I had to reinstall TBP as a result of accidentally restoring my phone. I had an app called Quick Boot, I think, and I hit the recover button by mistake, wiping all my downloaded apps. I reinstalled TBP from the market (among others) and TBP cannot restore the backups from my sd card. I have to tell TBP to detect the folder on my sd card and it finds it and then just freezes. I am rooted on a LG Optimus M and TBP has super user permissions and I am stumped.
Any help is greatly appreciated...............Tom

That shouldn't have happened. Which rooting tutorial did you follow?
Hitting Recover will only take you to the Recovery Application.
I had this exact same thing happen to me when I mistakenly installed the Recovery meant for v2.2 phones on my 2.2.1 phone.

Hi jabbawest...I agree it shouldn't have happened, there was no confirmation the phone just shut down and when it restarted I find myself in the mess I'm in now. I think I'm rooted at least the app RootCheck says I am. I have Android 2.2 and I'm way over my head as to how to resolve this. "RootCheck" initially says I'm rooted. However in the detailed results under "standard su binary location: /sysyem/xbin/su: no such file or directory", and "Alternate su binary location: /sbin/su: permission denied".
Root user id: uid=0(root)
Root group id:gid=0(root)

I am lost

- Re: Contacts - Ah, gotcha. Although letting google do it is a lot easier .

- Hopefully this Quick Boot program didn't cause more problems than what's visible. Since you have Android 2.2 (and not the newer 2.2.1), use Terminal or z4root to check if you're rooted. If not, you can use z4root to re-root your phone.

- Your TBP issue still has me befuddled. The only option that comes to mind is a corrupt backup since it can start reading the folder before it crashes. Might be a little more tedious but try removing some of the backups from the folder. Place them elsewhere and see if TBP can make it through the ones still in the folder. If so, you're halfway there and can probably narrow down the problem backup as you start putting the rest back in batches.

If you are running 2.2, you could have used z4root to permanently root your phone with one click [APP] z4root - xda-developers
I'm sorry to have to ask again, but what method did you use? It will make a difference as to how we proceed with helping you.

Hey Darnell, it should not cause any problems. It's much like Anreboot which allows you to either reboot or boot into a custom recovery. The Sense ROM has this installed by default.
It sounds like he either didn't install a custom recovery or installed the wrong version.
Either way, the phone would have done what he's describing.

Hi Guys,
You're correct I didn't install a custom recovery. After downgrading from 2.2.1 to 2.2 using andyo70's great tutorial, I rooted with Z4. I was so happy to get that far and the instructions for making a custom recovery were so confusing I procrastinated. I was able to do what I wanted, that is, clean all the Metro bloatware off my phone. I now realize I made a big mistake and want to

[1] restore my data,
[2] install a custom recovery and
[3] finally install a rom.

I'm afraid of the last two because of my inexperience but I need to learn. Incidentally I just re-rooted with Z4 and it rebooted the phone but no change in getting Titanium Backup Pro to install from the backups on the sd card (it just feezes).
Just had a thought: I made copies of TBP backups on my computer also. Any chance in restoring from backups on my PC?

if you have backups on your pc just delete the one currently on your sd card and save the ones on your pc to your sd and try it out

Tried your suggestion and sorry to say it didn't work. I then uninstalled and reinstalled Titanium Backup Pro, let it install busy box, gave it super user permissions and it shows that nothing is backed up. I then let it find the folder of backups on the sd card but when I tell it to use current folder it freezes.
While I appreciate everything that has been suggested, my hope is that someone who knows more than me, (and that's just about everyone), has a fix for this. Please help if you can.

Unfortunately your downgrade to 2.2 was not necessary as the only reason for doing so was to make rooting easier because 2.2.1 was released to patch the hole that allowed z4root to work.
But, with in the past month or so, a one click method was developed for 2.2.1 so new users no longer had to root the long hard way that most of us did.

Moving on from there.
Do you have a license for TiTu Pro on your sdcard and what version are you using?
You might also try hitting the Problems button on TiTu the hit Get Busybox, this will download a stable version of Busybox. You'll see Version 1.18 of Busybox already installed and can cause these crashes. When you hit Get Busybox it will download 1.16, which is more stable.
Go ahead and upgrade Superuser too.

I had to uninstall it again because it just freezes up when I try to run it. So I'm back to where I started...nowhere.
I check for upgrades to Superuser and none are available.

Try installing a previous version of TBP from http://www.matrixrewriter.com/android/files/TitaniumBackup.apk and see if it gives you the same results.

Thanks Darnell, I'll try it. the TBP Wiki was a desperation move. I didn't see a support email...I'll try to find it. I did pay for the Pro version and I am not impressed.

Thunder thanks for the reply. I did exactly the same thing as you and I'm encouraged by your comments. When I get to that point I will ask you what and how to do the cm7 rom.

Yep...same results. After it installs it shows no backups, so in preferences I have it detect its folder on the sd card. Then I say use current folder and it freezes. If I wait an error message apears saying "force close" or "wait". Then it crashes no matter what I do.
