Root Rooting dhd 2.3.3

I sold my desire now bought a dhd, desire was easy as hell to root but this thing makes my head spin.

The phone is unlocked, unbranded, 2.3.3, sense 2.1, build number 2.36.405.8, I don't know where to start I have read some guides that don't seem to add up then others saying I need to gingerbreak or something. Please can someone point me in the right direction as I hate the standard rom, I need CM7 back :(

ah dammit, I still can't get into the bootloader, I press volume down and power but it just keeps on booting normally, any suggestions?

When I did the cmd thing I was left with # and I'm sure that temp root was successful?

edit: overcame this problem because of the damn fastboot feature

got all that sorted now another problem. when I try to install the cm7 via clockwork mod it just reboots and shows the phone with a triangle sign containing an exclamation mark in it.

I didn't do s-off, so should I? I am rooted because I checked via terminal and superuser...

edit: I have now done s-off using a tool but still when I go to install a custom rom I am left with a red exclamation mark triangle

Hi Guys,
Just a question, I'm thinking of doing rooting and need to downgrade first. Is there a way to keep a backup or image of my current 2.3.3 installation just incase something goes wrong or if I want to go back to the stock rom at a later stage?

Don't know if it's possible to backup without root, but there is a link on here somewhere for the stock (unbranded) ROM. I'll see if I can find it for you when I get to a computer (too much of a faff when using my phone on the go!)

Cheers :)
