I was wondering what the difference between MPEG-4 and mp4 was. I kept seeing that it was the same thing on websites when i was looking for the answer, yet mp4 videos wont play on my xoom which supports MPEG-4. Any help of what i should do with my mp4 videos?

When I try and play my mp4 file it just skims through it real fast and wont play it normally, but the file plays normal on my computer. I converted the video and made it smaller, it stopped skipping but the audio was completely messed up and just made noises.

I just got off the phone with moto support because im that bored on this sunday. They told me that mp4 was not a supported format for the xoom, and that MPEG4 is supported. Now im confused..

MPEG4 is an audio/video compression standard, that has many "Parts" further specifying the characteristics of the compressed media files
MP4 is a media container format, and it is part of the MPEG4 standard.

So, in order for a media file to be play "natively" in your Android phone, it should comply MPEG4 standard (certain Parts) and be in MP4 container (have mp4 file extension).
That being said, you can also play non-compliant media files using universal players, like Vital Player mentioned above.

I dont understand why the file wont play then, it plays fine on quicktime. Other mp4 files play perfectly fine
Not all mp4 files are equal...
If you want to know the reason, get MediaInfo, then open that file, select Text format and you should see analysis of the video. Copy it here and we can look at the cause of the issue.

By the way, have you tried to play it with VitalPlayer?

This is the issue:
Format profile : High@L4.1
Basically, the video is very complex encoded, which your phone is unable to decode with its weak hardware. Also, the audio uses very high bitrate (401 Kbps).

Bottom line: your solution is to convert this file. Try using Handbrake with "Universal" preset. Pay attention to audio tab as well. Only after conversion you can play this nicely on your phone.
