Root Need help with AOSP roms

I have been using android devices since the g1 was released. I rooted most of them and ran custom ROMs. For the past few months I have also been creating themes for ROMs, so I'm no stranger to modding.

I have flashed a few AOSP ROMs and really like what they provide but I'm having problems that I can't seem to fix.

Here's what I do when flashing a new ROM, these steps have worked on all Sense ROMs that I have tried:
* Wipe data/factory reset
* Wipe cache
* wipe Dalvik cache
* Flash ROM
* Reboot

I've tried the above steps with the below ROMs from both Amon_Ra and ClockworkMod recoveries. I never have any problems with Sense ROMs.

CyanogenMod 7
Opinion: Loved it
Problems I couldn't solve:
* 4G never gets enabled upon reboot despite enabling it before rebooting. 4G always gets enabled after rebooting on Sense ROMs - 3G is slower than dial-up in my area
What I tried: Toggling 4G manually and rebooting - no joy

Kings UNleashed GB-R3
Opinion: Loved it
Problem I couldn't solve:
* Upon reboot after flashing lots of apps force close and nothing happens when I tap the android to set up the phone
What I tried: Fixing permissions in recovery - no joy

Salvage Mod 1.2.1
Opinion: Loved it
Problem I couldn't solve:
* Upon reboot after flashing lots of apps force close and nothing happens when I tap the android to set up the phone
What I tried: Fixing permissions in recovery - no joy

Evervolv
Opinion: Loved it

I never get the apps force closing on CM7, but having to manually re-enable 4G is annoying enough to keep me off of this nice rom.

I would really like to run one of the above ROMs if I can get these problems solved. Does anyone have any advice about fixing any of these problems on any of these ROMs? Is there something special one needs to do before/when flashing an AOSP ROM?

Apps aren't moved to SD in CM7. I can't check the others because the phone won't let me do anything except reboot. I can't tap on the android to begin setting up my phone because it won't do anything due to all of the force closes.
I've read in more than one thread that sometimes GB ROMs don't play nice with a card formatted in Froyo, though I've never encountered that particular glitch. I would try backing up the SD to a PC, format the card in Amon with a 512 ext3 partition (for apps2sd), restore the card, then reflash the GB ROM.

Hmm.. never thought of that. I'll give that a try today. Thanks for the tip.

Np, but I've never had that issue, so I can't speak to the validity, or if it will actually solve your problem. One more thing to try, though, might be a format all util. Here's a link to the Kings GB ROM, where you'll also find Kings Gapps and a utility that you flash to wipe all caches and format your ext3 partition:

Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

Good luck.

I'll try Kings, but I am using Calkulins clear temp and Calkulins format all.. They sound like they do the same thing. I'm trying the SD card partition right now so I'm hoping that works.

Well I installed Evervolv again and it's all working.. everything. So I'm guessing the problems were due to permission issues. It didn't really matter which gingerbread ROM I installed because I plan to theme the entire ROM.

Big thanks to uminchu for the tip about partitioning the SD card for gingerbread!

Now the fun part.. theming the entire ROM :D

You're very welcome. I've gotten a lot of help from some very cool people here, and I'm happy to help when I can.

Can you shoot me screen shots w/ your theming Ard???
Well, after taking apart framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk (gingerbread theming packages) there doesn't look to be much to theme. What I wanted was the original orange button highlights that were on my g1 but it looks like I don't need to do that now. I guess Google hasn't changed much between Cupcake and Gingerbread. The only thing I need now is a gingerbread dock and that took me 2 minutes to make (attached to this post). Kinda glad too, I really didn't look forward to messing with the .9.png files, lol.

This is why I wanted an AOSP ROM, no manufacturer skins.

I'm running the Evervolv ROM and don't think I'll be changing anything, it looks great. Here are more screenshots of Evervolv.
