Root Rooting questions

Hey guys. So I'm thinking of finally rooting my Rogers 2.3.4 Nexus One after keeping it stock for so long. My main reason for doing so is freeing up internal space on the internal memory. I suppose I'd also enjoy the benefit of further customization as well. But I have a few questions.

Up until now, I've put off rooting because I've glanced at some guides on how to do it and seeing all of the steps is overwhelming because I don't understand any of it. I realize there are steps to follow, but if I accidentally do something wrong with my phone I fear it may be very hard to troubleshoot because of my lack of knowledge on what;s actually happening with my phone.

1. I've heard that a 2.3.4 N1 can and can't be rooted. Which is it?
2. Would you recommend going with a stable or experimental build of CM7?
3. What are CM "nightly" builds?
4. Rooting (provided I set it up right) will give me a longer lasting battery right?
5. How often does CM update, and would I need to update every time a new version is released?
6. I have a Mac, not a PC. Is this going to be a problem in any way for doing the command steps or anything else?

Since I haven't rooted my N1, i cannot vouch for this, but I too have kept up with rooting the latest version.

1. It is my understanding that to root the N1 you have to roll it back to 2.3.3, root and then update to 2.3.4. You should retain root.

3. Nightly builds of any open source project are for developers and testers to work with so they can keep their code up to date.

4. It might, but not guaranteed. It depends more on your phone use that settings.
5 If you find a version you are happy with then there is no need to constantly update.

Thanks for those answers. I'm reading up on rooting and it just seems overwhelming. Every guide I read ping pongs me to more and more guides for installing this or installing that. On top of it all, all of the guides seem to be focused more on Windows than Mac. It seems there are a lot of C:/ this or that when setting this all up. Is using a Mac feasible?

That's what I found as well, however I'm using a Mac and the command prompts in this guide are for PC. I've tried using prompts that I think would equal what the guide says on my Mac, but it doesn't work..hmmm..

Let's get started:
1. Take a deep breath. It is just software and you are going to master it!
2. Download and install the Mac OSX Android SDK. I am going to assume for the purposes of this list that you have put it in /Applications/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/ but it doesn't matter.
3. Get fastboot-mac from here. Rename it 'fastboot' and put it in /Applications/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/.

I don't know if you need to get the complete SDK or you can get away with just the fastboot-mac files. I'd try that first, as long as the phone is recognized by your Mac in fastboot mode.

Thanks for that link, however I just got SDK running on my PC laptop, but i'm still getting errors doing it the other way (that supposedly works for 2.3.4.)

That new guide you posted might not work because it was posted over a year ago, and apparently the only 2.3.4 root option that works was in that first link?

I only posted that so you could get fastboot running on your Mac. It should still be valid even after a year.

What's the error you're gettng?

I follow all of the directions to a T, but when I type "fastboot devices" in the command prompt I get nothing. It all stops there.

If you don't get a response from fastboot devices, then the drivers aren't installed correctly.

Oh man, I've been at this all day and I can't do it. I'm thinking I'll just stick with my unlocked bootloader until a Superboot for 2.3.4. comes available, so I can do it the way most people do it.

Having my bootloader unlocked doesnt change anything does it? And about how long will it take for a superboot for 2.3.4. to become available?

Unlocking the bootloader won't cause any problems for you. I have no idea when a one-click root solution will be available for the N1 running 2.3.4.

Here I am looking to root my N1 on 2.3.4.
I'm about to start, already d/l su.zip, and put fastboot in my c:/ (put my windows hdd in for the sake of being able to follow a guide). Once I have that done, how do I go about putting Cyanogen on it?

Just gave it a whirl, did exactly as it said in the guide and all I got was an Android with a triangle ! sign by his head. Should there be some sort of output in the command prompt when entering "fastboot devices"?
