Just read on Engadget (app) that the Galaxy S III will be released in the first half of next year.

No specs given.

.. in other news, the Galaxy S2 set a record for fastest selling smartphone in Korea after selling 1M in the first month of domestic sales.

And by then, there'll be reports that the S4 will be released by the end of next year so best wait for that. Oh...the S5 will then be in the first half of 2013.

Buy what's right/best right now. Waiting for the "next thing" in technology is a sure-fire way of never buying anything.

I'm dying for the united states release of this phone. I don't think I'll survive another year of using my Samsung SGH feature phone.

When this is released, it will be the best phone, and my contract ends on the 8th of october which means I can get it the instant it arrives at a discount. There will always be better phones released in the future, and to be honest when was the last time you heard of something releasing on the date that they announced a year in advance.

Chances are that phone will be pushed into q3 for the UK, and first quarter of 2012 for the US.

Never ever trust release dates unless it is like a month away from release.

Most people buying this phone are probably the type that get new phones every 6 months anyway so I doubt it matters much if they get it now or wait for the next one.

yep, what this dude right here said. by the time it comes out, it'll have been a year from now and will be time for me to upgrade again :p

no matter what phone is the subject of discussion, a thread like this is always made and i always say the same thing.

I got the s2 on a 2 year contact.I'm happy though. I will be able to upgrade after 18 months and I have the latest and greatest in mobile phone technology. waiting for s3 is pointless. been there and done it. you can't just wait for the next best thing. you'll never get anything seeing as you'll always bed waiting for the next big thing. youre talking nonsense mate...

Yes.. or go the other way and keep buying the newest thing when it's the best - pay 3X as much for it only to have it become old after 4 months.

Unless there's a LOT of apps that just run too slow on the S2, I can't see myself needing a new phone for a loooong time. I can't see any new feature (aside from NFC) coming to a phone that I just HAVE to have, that my S2 doesn't already have. Heck, even my old Moto Droid would have been fine if it didn't start running sluggishly once I upgraded to 2.2 And even then, it wasn't THAT bad. I just wanted a bigger screen and faster phone. According to benchmarks my S2 is probably 6-8X faster than my Droid/Milestone. Simply due to heat dissipation problems, I can't see mobile phones becoming THAT much faster in the next 5 years. Adding more and more cores doesn't help, and you can't put a 3Ghz chip in a phone that burns red hot.

I bought mine from Popular Electronics in Chicago. But you don't have to wait for a 'country' to get it. There's a thing called mail :) Buy it from any reputable store in any country. It'll work on everything except Tmobile.

I'm sure Moto and HTC will have faster phones out by then. Even right now HTC has a dual core 1.2ghz 960x480px qHD display phone out that rivals the S2.

Chances are that phone will be pushed into q3 for the UK, and first quarter of 2012 for the US.

OOOoohh.. you're talking about the Galaxy S3. Yah who knows. The S2 with NFC will be out soon.

...and Verizon and Sprint and US Cellular. You know, the companies that collectively hold more than 50% of the 200+ million mobile subscribers in this country. If you're with AT&T and have $800 to shell out, go for it.

I really wish for Samsung say their US launch plan on SGSII soon. At least some clue/indication when we can expect this great phone here. I'm on Verizon and their new phones in the first half are not really impressing me enough. Thunderbolt, horrible battery, weak radio and dim screen. Charge, rfs file system and TouchWiz 3.0. Droid X2 is overheating, bogged down when used heavily. Though SGSII is not without small faults here and there, it's one heck of a phone easily blowing away everything on Verizon now. I can care less about any SGS3 rumors this year.

Should work on Verizon and Sprint no probs as I believe it supports their freqs. From what i read, only tmobile couldn't be used with the S2.

LOL. I just take care of my phones (keep them mint) and sell them on craigslist when I want something new. Makes it a cheap way to upgrade without having to sign a contract ;)

Yah I always buy my phones outright. Don't like being tied to anything.

But I think I paid about $500 or $600 for my Droid and I'd be lucky to get $100 for it now. Granted, it's 3 years later. But I spent $800 on my S2 and I think I'd be lucky to get half that when the S3 comes out. I can't afford $400/year to always have the latest phone :(

They've pretty much reached the speed limit without the need for external cooling, and all the current hardware has everything.... gps, fm radio, freqs for all carriers, camera, camcorder, etc... they're eventually going to get to a point where they can't upgrade anymore. At least not worthwhile upgrades to justify a new phone.

Ya true enough. I should read this post whenever I get the urge to upgrade. I think I have a problem lol :p

I teach high school kids and they had an intervention for me. lol I had a tad too many changes in phones this year. They just don't understand...

I'm surprised I stuck with my Droid for 3 years. I never noticed how slow it was until I got on my S2. Then again, it was FAR from being unusable. In fact, it's still a great little phone. The only reason I blew $800+ on my S2 was basically to get rid of some frustration when I'm in a rush to do something and have to wait for the small lags that happen on my Droid. Anyone ELSE wouldn't see it as a problem, but I lack anything resembling patience.

I *DO* however really miss my physical keyboard. On-screen keyboards just plain suck. And why no notification light? That's a big disappointment on the S2. Having to turn my screen on and enter the pattern each time I want to check to see if I have new msgs. With my Droid a little green light would flash on the top-right of the phone. Oh and the beep it makes when done charging, and turns on the screen, really sucks in the middle of the night.

Basically I wish my S2 was my Moto Droid with a 4.3" screen and dual core 1.2Ghz chip :) And curved edges (wasn't fond of the sharper feel of the Droid's edges) The slimness of the S2 is neat and all, but after I got over how 'cool' the thinness was, I really wish it was a few mm's thicker with a real keyboard. I also prefer the location of the power button on the Droid. oh and I miss the dedicated camera button. Oh and the always-lit menu and back keys. Actually to come to think of it, ergonomically the S2 sucks. It's on-screen stuff (how it runs, o/s, etc.) is great. But the body itself is just plain lacking. ESPECIALLY compared to my 3 year old Motorola Droid. HMPH.

Depending on what next year's phones are packing, I'll probably skip that generation and wait for the next one.
My last phone had an awesome (at the time) 8 megapixel camera on it, but with time the phone became obsolete in all the other areas mostly, I watched as phones came out with thinner designs, came with an OS, better GPS, could actually handle decent apps, but were not worth the money because they came with a measly 5mpx camera, I was determined not to give in to the crap three were trying to push on me endlessly and was waiting for the next truly awesome phone from LG, but all the brands kept bringing 5mpx and rarely 8mpx to market, and since I had already had 8mpx for over a year at the time, it was pathetic for them to be doing this. The Nokia N8 with 12mpx just wasn't quite right and then the much delayed E7 turned out to be worse.

Around the time of the E7 trying to get to market I caught wind of the S2 looming and I looked it over and it became clearer and clearer this was the one to get, after all that waiting, LG had failed me (and still haven't gotten their 12mpx phone beyond announcement stage, it's been ages), The S2 may have 8mpx still, but I knew by now it would be a much superior one, especially since it could officially record in 1080p. (old phone recorded in 640x480, and had the blockiness when capturing the sky etc, but the still shots were same res.)

Abandoned LG for Samsung and loving every minute of it, not to mention having Android, and there's nothing like having the best phone on the market.

The question for me is what's the SIII going to have that is so revolutionary that I'll go for it, buying another phone in a year's time takes some of the worthwhility out of buying accessories/spare battery for your current one.

Agreed, you can't keep wait for the next best thing, you'd never buy anything! I'd wanted a full-on smartphone for a year, maybe two, and when I saw the SGSII I had to have it. It's simply the best phone out there and it was easy to commit to buying it for that reason. Unlike 6 months ago when there were 4 phones vying for that title in my mind.

Yes the points you made are small features that make a big difference. It really does seem it would have been easy for Samsung to have added the LED and allow us to turn off the fully charged notification.

Some of those things can't be solved... but for your issue with the Menu & Back keys go to Home > Menu > Settings > Display > Touch Light Key Duration, and change the setting.

On-screen just isn't for everybody but I'd recommend Swiftkey or Skype as great apps to give you a more usable on-screen keyboard.

And finally download NoLED which, when you get a msg of any kind or a missed call, will pop up a small icon on your screen meaning you won't need to unlock to see notifications. As the screen is amoled it only lights the pixels needed for the tiny icon so won't cause battery drain.

Hope these suggestions go some way towards increasing your love for the SGS!! :)

ALTHOUGH they say first half of the year...I think the S3 will be released same time as the SII. That still qualifies as first half of the year.

Not to mention carriers might want the GSII to sell some more BEFORE they begin selling the S3.

They say "first half" because it's all marketing and they want you to know that the Galaxy S range is continuing.

Furthermore, the USA hasn't even got the GSII yet, so they'll release the S3 late, in the first half of the year so that they can maximise sales of the GSII. They need to do that, to prove to many Americans that they CAN indeed get updates out and are more reliable.

(the reason I focus on america is because I've heard there were loads of issues with updates and other issues, EVEN though many say that it's the carriers faults or something like that.)

Sorry to go on but...

Samsung Mobile Displays first 5.5G production line is ready to produce AMOLED panels

furthermore, Samsung have just opened up a brand new AMOLED production line, that is capable of producing 30,000,000 per month. This production line, I think, produces Super AMOLED Plus. If the S3 was coming out early 2012, I highly doubt they'd invest in a new production line for the older AMOLED Plus when the S3 will have Super AMOLED Plus WITH 300+ PPI, which requires a different method of manufacturing (using lasers, instead of metal - or something like that)
