Root Can Rooted phones do official upgrades?

If I give my rooted phone to someone running sprint lovers rom can they upgrade their software to gingerbread when it's released? They don't mind lossing root they just want to be able to upgrade to gingerbread when it's released.

It probably wouldnt work, they could unroot or my suggestion flash the official gingerbread. We will have a stock rooted version at the same time if not sooner...

crap can someone confirm this? I thought i read you can upgrade you'll just lose the Root.

I've heard you can as well but lose root *but* it's the custom recovery rooted phones have that won't allow an OTA to my understanding. Since I've been rooted I've never had an offer to accept an OTA.

Evomatt is correct that we'll have a stock GB official release prior to it being released to the masses.

How do I know if i have a custom recovery? I"m using RA 2.3. I thought some ROMS disabled the OTA notifications but you can still go in there and manually check for software upgrade. I won't be in contact with this person once i sell the phone to them so I just want to make sure I give them accurate information.

Ra 2.3 is a custom recovery. If you have full root you have a custom recovery, its one of the requirements of full root and something unrevoked flashes for you.

I've never known anyone to try and if there was an hboot upgrade you would lose the ability to root. You would at least lose the root on your Rom. But you have a custom recovery flashed and there lies the rub. It has been mine and at least akaza's opinion that it likely wouldn't accept the ota if you tried. Point really is don't do it if you are rooted. Unroot the phone for him or instruct him to flash a rooted ginger when it comes out officially

If the concern is to be able to accept OTA, why not unroot the phone and put it back to stock before selling it? Sprint Lover's and stock are almost identical. Giving someone a rooted phone without them knowing what to do with it can be a recipe for disaster in some cases. JMO :D

I agree. Most of the threads I have seen of someone nuking a phone is when they get it already rooted and not knowing exactly the procedures for doing things. If that person wants a rooted phone, I would make them go though the whole process of doing it themselves. There's nothing better than a firsthand learning experience.

The only reason i asked was because I listed my phone on Ebay and someone sent me a message asking if they can upgrade to gingerbread when it was released. I'm leaving the phone as is. i stated is rooted and everything working perfectly including the tether hack. It'll be the buyers responsibility to buy it and mess with it later.

If you sell it to them rooted, recommend coming here and learning about rooting before they try and make changes to it so at least they have half a clue what they are getting into. ;)

Make sure if you do sell the phone that the phone has a Sense rom on it. No AOSP roms or ports. Sprint will not be able to activate the phone otherwise;)
