Verizon: Say So Long to Unlimited Data

I'll wait and see what exactly the plans look like before I make my judgment. I heard the may even do a blanket faminly data plan. But this will only effect you if you are redoing your contract. If you already have an unlimited data plan they can't take it away till you renigociate. My sister had a unlimited data plan from like 6 years ago and still has it and she only pays 15 bucks a month for it

Verizon's CFO mentioned that the carrier would likely one day offer family-based data plans, where you could have one giant plan to share among multiple people and multiple devices."

This, I need this. Four smarthphones in the family costing $30 each for internet is just ridiculous amount a month for JUST INTERNET, $120!! Thats 2x more expensive than my comcast bill thats an unlimited plan yet they cant offer more than 2gb per phone?

I listen to Pandora hours a day at my desk at work and they don't have Wifi, so this tiered thing better be cheap as hell or I'm jumping ship. Thankfully my phone is relatively new so I'm not worried (now).

can't you just use your computer for pandora? I only use it on my phone when I'm in the car. At work, I just use the computer w/headphones plugged in...

i work at verizon, and they've disappointed me a few times this year:
first when they gave and then took away the $15 data plan option. a lot of our customers don't need unlimited data and it was a great alternative to paying $30 a month.

Then they changed their warranty replacement methods. It was free overnight shipping, then you have 10 days to return the phone. NOW, it's 3-5 days via USPS and you only have 5 days to return the old phone. Then they pour a little salt in the wound by texting the customer right after they receive the phone telling them they are going to be charged a 300-500 dollar equipment fee if they don't return it. Well the problem with that is, most customers read this wrong and think they ARE being charged the fee. You don't know how many pissed off people i get calling the store about this on a daily basis.

when i first got verizon about 5 years ago, they had EXCELLENT customer service. it's really gone downhill in the past year.... disappointing.

but, more relevant to the discussion at hand:
if you have an unlimited data plan now, don't worry. verizon won't change your plan unless you agree to it, EVEN IF YOU UPGRADE YOUR PHONE (renew your contract). i have a couple customers that still have unlimited usage on mobile broadband cards from years ago, and i've upgraded them into a mifi and kept the unlimited plan.

as for switching to another carrier, all you're doing is paying extra money (by switching) to delay the inevitable for a short time. It's only a matter of time before t-mobile and sprint jump on the bandwagon.

I was in verizon today buying a new phone and flat out asked about this and I had to people tell me they hadnt heard anything about this, and often things like this are leaked and cause all kinds of crap! I was also told that those who have the unlimited data package dosent have to worry if this does happen!

Ok so my contract is up in september and I am most DEFIANTLY going to upgrade my phone to something newer and shinier and what not. Now if I do that, will I lose my unlimited data and be forced into using this tiered plan or is that only if I change my contract? My dad says it should stay the same if I stick android, but Im mildly curious about the new Iphone too(Whatever that will be).

I like verizon and sticking on my dad's plan, its cheap and it works. Plus I use about 3.8 Gigs a month (Based on VZN's data calculator) And I have a big problem spending even MORE money a month for this.

Im pretty sure since you have it you wouldnt loose it no matter what phone you got. But then again I was told it wasnt happening!

So I take it that if I do not have an unlimited plan now, I should change now before
the option goes away?
And that way I would remain grandfathered in?
This would be my suggestion. However, keep in mind that some phones are "incompatible" with certain calling plans (which I think is total bull and just there way of forcing you to change you calling plan). I'm not sure if that applies to data as well.

nope. upgrading wont affect your price plan, it only EXTENDS the agreement.

if you want to be SURE you will have it, then yes.

i can tell you one thing. with this, they wont tell me (a store rep) and they wont tell you (the customers), i'll just go into work one day and it'll be the new policy. Thats how verizon tends to do things. I'm guessing they do this so people don't hear about it then all run in and grab the data plan before it disappears.

I just ordered a thunderbolt too. I swear if my current unlimited plan doesnt get grandfathered in and they either make me pick a different data plan or take a free etf I am gonna be so pissed off.

The only reason I got the thunderbolt was the 4g unlimited data as I will do all my computing stuff on it and I will use alot of data.
