Root Can I use my Contract SIM if I flash Oxygen RC7 onto my HTC desire>

I've searched the forums for a few days now reading up on Rooting phones and Custom ROMS. I have a HTC Desire and am considering flashing Oxygen onto it as it doesn't seem as if Desire users are going to receive the Gingerbread update for what could be months, and Oxygen looks very slick and fast from what I've seen on Youtube videos.

The only thing that I haven't been able to find out by searching the forums is whether I can still use my 24 month contract SIM from Vodafone with the Custom ROM. I understand that rooting e.t.c voids the warranty on the phone and so wanted to check before I do anything with Custom ROMS on my phone (probably is a stupid question but I wanted to be sure.)

Also I was wondering if there was any chance that I could brick my phone irreparably when attempting this procedure as I have 9 months left on my contract and don't want anything to go wrong. I'm new to Rooting phones and so I'm sorry if this is a noob-ish question.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

Pretty much all errors are recoverable. I would recommend you read the rooting FAQ (linked from the sticky thread of this forum) a few times to get familiar with what you are doing and what is involved. There are also guides here for almost everything you need.

SIM locks are hard coded into the phone (although this can be changed) but rooting and installing custom roms will not affect sim provisioning on the device itself so that should be fine.

Thanks! I've decided I'm definitely going to install a Custom ROM with Gingerbread, but having done more research I can't decide on which ROM I want to use as MIUI looks quite good as well as Oxygen and Cyanogenmod. Any advice as to which I should use? I mainly use the phone for texting and facebook but I also use some emulators (a lot more since the Froyo update.) I also am looking into starting to develop my own simple apps in the future once I've become more adept with other Android ROMs.

In general, Roms like Oxygen, CyanogenMod7, Gingervillan, Redux, etc look very similar to each other - kind of "Nexus One" look and feel. So, it doesn't really matter which you you try. In fact, try them all. In half an hour you can backup your current ROM and flash a new one.
MIUI ROMs look different. So, try them later if you want.
