Clear had been quietly expanding 4G unannounced

Little Rock, Mobile, Pensacola, Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport, Milton FL, Fort Walton Beach FL, Niceville FL, New Orleans, a ton more 4g pockets in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee..

I had noticed this a few days ago, but wasn't sure about the 4g coverage vs clear. Anyway, talked to a Clear rep last night, and he confirmed that Clear has been going crazy with stepping up the 4g footprint, but that Clear hadn't made any announcements, not even to their sales reps.

Anyway, its confirmed working in Pensacola. Don't know speeds and don't know if these new spots have had all the juice dialed in ...

Clear is not the only partner expanding wimax, all the partners are expanding wimax. So even though clear may not actually being building the network out, it is still being built out.

Agreed... just would have been nice if someone sent me a notice, "hey, that 4g phone in your hand that you have been paying an extra $10 premium for since June, you can now use the 4g in your town"...

The 10 dollar premium was for network build out, not 4g.

But it is really not that easy. Most places get a soft on, meaning the company is done with the build out but has not updated the towers guide yet, until the tower guide get updated, it is considered a soft on.

The tower guide never gets updated, ever.

Dunno who did it, Clear or Sprint or whoever, but they expanded in Annapolis, MD a good bit too. They had a tiny bit in a small part of town about 6 months ago and now it's like half of the city

Clear is still an awful company, but a growing footprint does benefit Sprint.

Actually if you're on sero it is specifically for 4g. And with sprint giving clear a buttload of money, theybetter be improving coverage. And yes, at least verizon lets peopleknow they've ex planned coverage.

They changed the policy anyway. Now ALL smartphones require the $10 add-on. Since 4G phone owners had to bitch and complain, the ruined it for everybody.

Anyways, I noticed that some holes in 4G coverage here in San Jose, CA have been filled in. Particularly, the one my apartment was in.

I sincerely doubt that the 10$ premium was due to 4g phone owners bitching. It seems to me that it was a plan they were moving forward with on all smart phones and the Evo and Epic happened to be the firsts (Some phone had to be). Back to topic, we seem to be getting a little bit more coverage in the New Orleans area unofficially of course.

They may be expanding those markets, but I can confirm they have not turned on 4G in Louisiana or Mississippi. I was in Pensacola 6 weeks ago, and there was no 4G although I heard it is coming soon to the Fla panhandle. I have also heard Sprint has a very aggressive build out plan over the next 2 years, but I am not aware of anything in the immediate future. fingers crossed.

I am on 4g right now in New Orleans. Go to Clear.com and coverage and manually zoom in the Maps. You will see little pockets all over Louisiana and Mississippi.

After I read your post I began turning on my 4G in Baton Rouge to see where it works. The coverage map you linked is completely inaccurate, but I am finding several hot spots of 4g. Some of these 4G areas are in white on the Clear map and should not have coverage, while many of the green areas have no coverage. I went to New Orleans 3 weeks ago and had no coverage. I was in Metairie today and had some coverage. Interesting that most of North Baton rouge is shown in green while hardly any of the affluent areas of South Baton Rouge are shown to have coverage on the map. I hope continue to expand this over the next few months.

yea, they are definitely expanding, they just do it unannounced. However, I stumbled across a couple articles today... expanded coverage in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh... and LOTS of burbs getting lit up.

Let's hope Network Vision will help us all with 4G coverage. This is my only gripe with Sprint. I'm in Phoenix.. pop of over 8million.. and the 4G coverage is next to nothing. So when I see all these other towns, some in BFE getting 4G, it frustrates me!

New Orleans is covered from around Claiborne at the interstate up to the other side of Crescent City Connection and from Poydras to Washington (uptown). @sikclown- I'm now convinced that 4G has not been officially turned on in BR. I think they are just testing it which is why the service is intermittent. I'm hopeful that we will have it up soon. Is it consistent in NOLA or is it being turned on/off for testing?

Yes as I have pointed out several times it is not official. They were just sitting on spectrum so they had to turn it on (my guess). I don't think it is testing, I just think there are only like one or two towers. In Nola it is consistent with what the Clear Map shows.... Not a large area but one I happen to live in.

Same here. In Phoenix. No 4G within 30 minutes drive of where I live. Everything else about Sprint is awesome... just bad 4G here in Phoenix. =(
