Root When will the official Gingerbread OTA get root?

I didn't see a thread specific to [easily] rooting the official OTA Gingerbread OS so I thought I'd start one (Moderators if there is one then please merge, delete or otherwise disposition as you see fit).

Its my understanding that Verizon's GB OTA cannot be rooted at this time (June 1st), but I'm hoping it will come soon (1-click similar to Z4?) and I wanted to create a thread where it could easily be found when created.

I'm currently on rooted Froyo 2.2.1 and happy with my phone in its current configuration but also looking forward to seeing what improvements a rooted Froyo might bring. I really like the 1-click rooting solution ala Z4, but if one isn't coming sometime soon I may venture into the 2-part download for the rooted OTA version, which is the only way to have a rooted version of the OTA at this time - see Link to .596 OTA (Rooted/Odexed/Deodexed/Etc) for more info on going this route. I'm personally going to wait a bit to see what happens - I'm a little put off by the complaints of problems I've read about in some of the other threads relating to GB issues here. As I said I'm extremely happy with my current setup and don't want to screw up my phone.

Hopefully we'll see something developed soon...:D

I posted an outline yesterday of the steps I followed Saturday night:

http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-x/343672-droidx-gingerbread-update-soak-test-starts-tonight-3.html#post2757870

I was setup just like you were (Froyo, stock, but rooted, not deleted or frozen apps). I had not previously installed a custom ROM or theme since I wanted to stay stock for both app development purposes and I didn't want to bork my phone ;). Nevertheless, I finally decided it was time. The install went very smoothly.

The final OTA release of GingerBread is pretty sweet (pun fully intended :D). Noticeably smoother and faster. Still exploring and finding new things and improvements.

A word of caution: I do think any and all that root should be well-versed in how, why, and what they are doing so that they are not only prepared for the benefits, but the possible consequences of rooting as well. My feeling about this has remained unchanged since rooting my Eris in early May of last year. It is your phone and your are responsible for any actions you perform on it.

Good luck to all who attempt this. Do your homework first--you'll learn a lot and that can only help you for the future.

It will probably be quite some time for that to come about. Seeing as how P3 already releases the leaks rooted. It's like he doesn't want the process to be known or something. I'm not to sure how he would know how to do this though. .

I believe that he actually splits apart the Update.zip file and inserts the root pieces (su, busybox, and SuperUser.apk, etc.) and repackages them as two .zip files that are flashable by ClockworkMOD. I took a peek at the part1.zip and part2.zip files and there is definitely some voodoo :)eek: / :D) and obfuscation that is going on (which is cool too ;)).

That's not to say that this is an easy or simple process and there may very well be more to it than that and I am in no way trying to lessen the value or impact of what he and his team have done. I'm just guessing that this is the method by which root can be achieved without actually having a traditional root exploit.

Cheers!

If the process is not out there in world it's that much harder for the powers that be to plug it up.

Yeah but this thread is about finding a way to root it. Presumably one-click. So if that's ever released then Moto will probably patch it lol. Like the did with Gingerbreak. Worked pre-951 but not after.

And I don't even know what P3 is up to these days. Masterminding the take down of Moto no doubt

I'm of the opinion that there WILL be a way to root that OTA at some point. I wouldn't even be surprised if it is of the "one click" variety. That being said, I am only basing this off of past rooting fears of other OTAs and how it didn't take long for someone to crack the rooting process pretty easily. Z4 is of course WAY too easy and probably spoiled us all. So since I use far too many apps that require root, I went ahead and SBF'd, and flashed the 2 part rooted/deodexed zip files. Now I have rooted GB.

Can the patched update.zip files be installed if you already have the official OTA release?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see that it can't be done.

I think you can (you'll have to restore / SBF back to a prior release, but you gotta use the right SBF file), see Teegunn's post just above (and below, lol).

Teegunn, were you on the OTA and if so, which SBF file did you use to revert back to Froyo? (I've never been able to keep it straight as to which SBF is right for which).

Thanks!

Trust me guys, the devs are smart and will easily have root on GB very soon. What i am confused with is since there is a way to be on the ota Gb rooted as P3 ever so greatly bestowed upon us, why not use this as a starting point for new Gb roms to flash in the future,i mean once your rooted, why the hell would you want to go back.PLease point out if i am wrong about being able to flash new Gb roms originating from rooted ota Gb.

that will be the base of new ROMS...that is exactly where they will come from...there just won't be many

I wasn't on the OTA, just on Froyo.... but the SBF was this one:

Android 2.2.1 System Version 2.3.340 Full (VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01)

That one worked fine for me, but again I was coming from Froyo. Not sure it will work if coming from the OTA.

Fully endorse this thread as I am in need of this as well. There is another suggestion that has been made to flash back to froyo and then flash to a prerooted version of .596. Now I've never done anything like this before and am perfectly willing to wait for a root option (won't loose sleep in the meantime) however has anyone done the described process before? Does it lose apps, game saves/data, etc? Because updating OTA didn't and I'd rather not redo all of that and just wait for a root option if that is entailed.

Any feedback is appreciated as this is my first post. Glad to be a official member now ^_^

Jake,

Welcome to AndroidForums!

See my post near the top of the thread (second post) where I discussed how I did the pre-rooted OTA install. I was still on Froyo, rooted (via Z4root) when I installed the pre-rooted GingerBread OTA files that P3Droid graciously created.

I do have confidence that there will, eventually, be a GB root exploit, but there's no telling how long it might take.

Cheers!

Hey Welcome to the forums, Jake!

There is another thread here in the root section that has some great info on creating an SBF to stock FROYO CD, Creating a bootable linux CD soley to SBF *headache free* I may try it at some point and update my phone to the rooted GB to check it out, unless an easy OTA root option becomes available (hence this thread). Just wanted to throw that out there for you...

could we get someone to change the title of this thread with the OP's permission...it is waaaaaaay to misleading. ...The fact that it has 19 posts yet has 1700+ views should tell you that.

also why would a dev waste time making a one click root app when there is already a rooted version out. I personally wouldn't if i was P3. It's a waste of time imo

To all those saying that GB would be rooted within days to a week after GB OTA was released, I hate to say it, but I told you so :p

I'd say, just move on and stop worrying about it, it's not necessary.....stop being so lazy about the steps needed to take to root :p;):D

Some users are not that tech savvy and are not comfortable flashing something. They want a simple solution and a 1-click root app would do that. It isn't laziness, it's comfort. The users of this forum are the exception, not the rule, and don't represent the overwhelming population that has no interest in digging into the more complex modifications of their phone.

Well in all honestly if you are not at least somewhat tech savvy you shouldn't be playing with things that can very easily cause damage to your phone, or at the very least cause you to work very hard to get your phone back up and running.

But, that's why these forums are here, to help those individuals out.

We know Steven says he isn't tech savvy, but he's got some skills ;)
