To Root OR not to Root.

There is not much benefit for you to root your phone at this point, if you arent planning on flashing a different rom. Most of the 2.1 goodies are available as installable apk's and boot animations ect can be pushed to the phone without requiring root access.

Thanks man. Thats what i was wondering. Seems the other 2 guys know 2 much that they cant answer instead just push useless letters on their keyboard.. Myself being a Moderator for a Diesel Forum really respects guys like you that just answer it instead of looking foolish and making the site look bad.

You know; I've been lurking this same subject for about a few weeks now. I'm most definitely going to root. But not yet.
The 2.1 release is coming out soon and that will be enough for me until then.

I'm certain that the developers of these roms and cracks will come out with a really easy way to root in the future and (in my opinion) rooting now is not yet worth it. There is a real risk of bricking. Just like jailbreaking the iphone; It will get much simpler.

When verizon stops pushing the new android releases to the droid, the rom developers will keep pushing their edition of the most current android version (provided that droid's hardware can support it) and you'll need a rooted droid to do that.
Not to mention that since a rooted droid is basically a fully customizable linux touchscreen mini computer, the sky is the limit as to what people will come up with down the line.

+1 To the complaint about those other two guys. I wish the mods would enforce that stuff. Its like i cant even post a question on this forum anymore without some "in the know" loser posting his sarcasm. Guys, your never gonna get a girlfriend that way! Go out do other stuff.

Frankly, if you're going to root your phone, at least do your due diligence and learn what it means for a DROID to be rooted. I read statements made all the time regarding a rooted DROID and the risk of it bricking. These statements only make the one making them sound like the fool that they are. :(

Having said that, here's the most simply analogy that I can come up with.

You buy a building with 2 rooms. The original purchase comes with one key for only 1 of the rooms. There's a lot of cool things in that room. But then you hear about some people who own a building just like yours, but they can do even more cool things because they have the key to the other room. The secret room! So you do a little reading, type some meaningless gobbledeegook into your PC and/or phone, and you receive "the other key" to the secret room. (Can you hear the angelic choir singing?)

That's it! Now you are rooted. Period. All the rooting means is that you have access to the secret room in your DROID.

It is only if and when you go into the secret room that you run the risk of bricking your building ... err, umm ... DROID.

The first thing you might do is find out what apps are available (i.e. idiot-proof) on the Android Market. That way, going into the secret room isn't so risky, now is it?

Another thing you might want to do is read (and learn ... crazy, I know) what you're doing in the secret room. Knowledge is power, people!

Hearing statements regarding "1 click to rooting" scare the crud outta me. Like I replied in one thread, what comes after "1 click to rooting" is "1 click to UNbricking". :(

The bottom line: If you want to play in the secret room, educate yourself so you can handle what lies behind the door! ;)

I'm the type of person when I buy a car, I put rims and a system in it immediately.

That is how I view my Droid and it is part of the reason why I switched from the Eris. When you root your phone, you have the ability to make it yours, with the help of other designer's roms. Unless you know how to create your own.

Don't be scared of people saying you will brick your phone. There are plenty of how 2 instructions and it is really not that hard, but well worth it once it is done.

The most common answer when searching for this subject is "If you have to ask, don't do it". Which is not very helpful and doesn't impress anyone.

So you're saying that all of the other answers are unobtainable??? Funny, but every time I search for stuff, I find what I'm looking for. Maybe it's because I look longer than two seconds. I guess from now on I'll just create a new thread ... what the heck? I think I feel a "What's the best apps for my Droid?" thread coming on. ;)

I am fairly new to Android. I am considering rooting my Droid but I have one question that I have not seen a definitive answer for. My Droid is running the current 2.0.1 version of the OS. I would like the 2.1 update but I want to wait until the official update is released and not install a half-baked ROM modified from the Nexus One. Here is my question, if I root my Moto Droid will I still receive the 2.1 OTA update or will I have to manually install future updates?

No im saying that after I search, I have to root through hundreds of off topic " I'm the wittiest geek" posts and smart a$$ comments too find my answer buried four pages in.
Its just easier to start a clean thread. So that's what I'll do.
