Sorry if this in the wrong place. First off I bought my phone in march off of craigslist everything works fine except I noticed when I running apps or the internet for long periods of time it would reboot didn't really think anything of it. Well since then I've rooted and tryed differant roms and kernels and it still reboots when gets hot. I've came to realize when the phone gets physically hot it reboots even if I'm not doing much with it.

Basically my question is what are my options? I have insurance through sprint but don't really care to make a claim because I really don't want pay the $100 deductible. If I unrooted and take it in would the exchange it out for maybe a refurbished phone? Is there any other way to keep the phone cool? Thanks in advance for anyone that can answer any of these questions.

Have you tried flashing a different kernel? That may solve your problem.

Unfortunately, it sounds like if you unroot it and take it in, the issue will be fixed and there will be no need for a replacement. Although, it may and if that is true, Sprint will give you a "free" replacement.

I would suggest you to do as others suggested and try other kernels and ROMs and see what your results are. I would also take it one step further and unroot your phone and reroot it.

If you want something temporary, do NOT use ANY Android Task Managers. They use more memory and power than you would think. You can use the settings' force close to force close apps that are taking space such as mail apps and such which will reduce pressure on the RAM causing it to not overheat as quickly. Only problem is that you would have to do this everytime you exit an app.

EDIT: If you do take into Sprint DO UNROOT. I have heard many people say that Sprint has voided their warranty once they found out that it was rooted.

MIUI ROM actually gave me similar problems. If you search threads I created, you will probably find one asking this site about the problems. My phone would have some really weird screen issues that were definitely a hardware issue and not a software issue. I uninstalled it and got another ROM and the problem stopped. I got the ROM back a few weeks late and tried doing different settings such as lowering the animations and such. It seemed to go away and the phone was sorta back to normal. When I tried uploading a new kernel to it though, that's when all hell broke loose and my phone's touch screen stopped working. Then I switched to another ROM again and never went back.

Try toning down your settings and see what happens too.

yeah so i had that very same issue. i tried everything and i would still get random reboots. i also noticed that my phone would get hotter then usual. so after troubleshooting with various roms and kernles, i decided to unroot my phone. i then played around with the stock rom just to see if unrooting fIxed the issue and nope. my unrooted phone would also reboot randomly. so i took it in to have the sprint techs look at it. they just tried a hard reset and it still would reboot randomly. so the tech order me a refurbished one and i have not had that issue anymore.

I may have to take my wifes evo in. Her evo is unrooted, but it gets hot...I mean REALLY hot even when she hasnt used it for an hour. And it will randomly freeze and reboot.

Sounds like she may have gotten a bad phone?

By unrooted you are saying that it has never been rooted? Either way, it sounds like she got a bad phone. If I were her, I'd take it in and demand a replacement at no extra charge if she has insurance.

What may happen is that she'll have to leave it for a few hours and when she comes back, they'll order a new one for her and keep that one, or ship it to her and have her return hers.

You are correct, she doesn't want me to mess with her phone. But I've picked it up before to make a call and it feels like the battery is so hot it will explode.

lol I got you. That's excellent for her so she can get a replacement with no hassles. Well good luck. I'm going to say that that is a hardware issue and must be dealt with by Sprint. Unless she wants to go to someone off Craigslist and void her warranty and possibly not have her phone fixed :p

I just wanted to update what I did with my phone for anyone that has the same problem. I unrooted and took it to sprint. They took and had there techs look at and did a hard reset, as soon I left the store I got it to reboot by getting it hot the same problem I was having. I took it back again and show them that it was doing it again, so they gave me a new phone, no issurance and not a refurbished one. Thanks for everyone that gave feedback on this thread. Getting ready to root the new one now.

One question if anyone could answer, after I root my new one can I use a old nandroid I have on my sd from my old phone? Thanks again for all the great members on this site.

Generally speaking no. You can use elements out of it but not all of it. For most people it's not worth it. You should be very comfortable with android if you are going to try...? Up to you if you want to get into pulling the nandroid apart and pulling out images at the very least or pulling data from those images.

Thanks for the response, I'm just going to start from scratch. Formating my sd card, just saved all my pics. I don't have any apps that I need that I don't have saved on my computer and I cant get back.

Make sure you don't accept the OTA before you root or you might be waiting a while.

Lol, when I unrooted my old phone I updated it, but when I got the new phone I told the guy that was prepairing it make sure not to update it to gingerbread, and he asked why. I said I ran it and it still had a few bugs, and I would take care of it myself. Anyways new one is rooted and just made my nandroid, so let the fun begin.
