Root No room to install ROM

Hi, I'm new to rooting, and have just been following directions from this forum to get my phone rooted. The phone was rooted fine, and I did a nandroid backup (i think?) right after i rooted as was recommended here:

I then went to install cyanogenmod, but before doing that did a titanium backup of all my apps. This went fine.

I then went to download the cyanogenmod ROM to my sd card, and after getting about 35% done the phone gave me a message that I had no room left on my phone.

I go to settings and it says:

SD card total space 1.86 GB; available space 0.00B
Internal phone storage total space 6.60 GB; available space 4.86 GB

Did I do something redundant or wrong to use up my SD card space? Please help-

Nandroids take up a lot of space on the phone, but are necessary. I'd recommend getting a larger capacity card, unless you can delete everything off your card except the "clockwork" folder.

I had to delete some of my older nandroid backups the last time I got ready to swap roms. They are huge files. I think they are about 500MB or so on my phone.

I wouldn't go deleting your nandroid backup as that is the only one you made if I read correctly. First thing is to backup your sdcard to your pc if possible then delete as much as you can to free up some space, at least 1 gb to download the new ROM and to make a new nandroid backup of it. Once your done installing the new ROM and making a backup you can delete the new ROMs file from the sdcard and then copy as much of the stuff you saved to the pc as can fit. I would also get a larger sdcard if this is going to be a recurring issue. You could also move some stuff to the internal storage either using the usb connection and a pc or root explorer. The internal storage is a good place to put music and picture files.

Good point. I only deleted my older backups. I definitely wouldn't delete the most recent ones.
But copying them to your PC is a definitely good alternative to deleting them.
In my case I just knew I would never use them again, so I didn't mind deleting them.

Get the Reflash.exe program for Android 2.2 Incredible/Evo. Pick the one for your OS (Mac, Windows, or Linux). This program runs on your computer, not on the phone!
Verify that you have an SD Card installed with at least 2Gb free space.

This is very important. As they said, backups take up a lot of memory. If you are going to be flashing ROMs and making backups I would suggest having a bigger sd card. I have a 16 gb and still every week I have to go through and delete what I don't want. It's well worth the investment to get a bigger card!

Thanks for everyone's replies.

So last night what I ended up doing is just moving the clockwork backup ROm that I made with ROM manager to my pc, which freed up enough space for me to put the CM7 ROM on my sd card. I then installed CM7 and am now running CM7.

Is this dangerous? Do I have no backup if CM7 has a problem? I did the nandroid backup when I rooted, and I also did a backup with ROM manager -- are they the same backup and so did I move my only backup to my pc, or is the original backup from when I rooted and was in the hboot or recovery menu or (whatever it's called? where you use the optical trackball to select items) still there? How do I check?

Navigate to the "clockwork" folder on you sd card, then look in the "backup" folder and see if you have anything in there.
I'd recommend since you are very new to this to ALWAYS keep a backup(nandroid) on your sd card.

And yes, a backup made with rom manger is the same thing as a nandroid. Think of them as a system restore point if you screw up.
