Root Impressions of the new 2.3 OTA ROM

I think they are the same as the Froyo ones......doesn't seem that much changed from 2.2 to 2.3.

Yeah, my wife got the new update. And I was VERY underwhelmed. I mean it is quicker I will give it that. But I *thought* we were supposed to get the new camera app (did droid x get this a few days ago?) And I thought I read somewhere that the wifi/3g/battery indicaters were supposed to be green?

But it is a step up, but if you arent a hardcore phone person like most of us are. Then you will not notice a difference at all.

yeah i remember the hoopla over the ota going from 2.1 to 2.2 and everybody was so let down. especially when they added the blockbuster app and nova. lame!

Yep. I think this is generally true for all updates on all Android phones. The hype really gets people excited, and the reality underwhelms.

Keep this in mind the next time you're in the market for a phone, and you are wondering if getting Android OS updates is an important consideration.

I think the next one for me will depend on how active the dev community is for said phone instead of necessarily what the phone comes with.

I flashed the rooted stock ROM yesterday. Not much has changed in the UI, but there was a noticeable performance boost, as the phone seems more responsive.

I also think my battery life has increased, but it's a little too soon to verify that.

Overall, I'm happy with it so far. The only negative is that the Netflix app will not stream on this version. I've read that Netflix is aware of the issue, so hopefully they'll have a fix soon.

EDIT: 6.5 hours since last charge, at %20 battery now. That's actually an improvement though, since I've been playing games, browsing forums, and other stuff almost the entire time. On the 2.2 ROM I was running before this, I was only getting about 4 hours from a full charge with heavy use.

Finally got around to flashing this ROM. Quick observations:

Definitely much smoother (no lag spikes) than what I remember of my old 2.2 stock setup.

Most of the AOSP Gingerbread aesthetic and usability improvements have been completely masked by Sense:

black status bar
keyboard
browser
...

Not that this is a bad thing; Sense has always been more user friendly than the average overlay or AOSP. But for those people hoping to see more Gingerbread, they may not see a visual difference.

ROM came with busybox.

Swype is still there. sweet.

camera has face detection and a bunch of new things i've never seen before.

Sense doesn't allow you to scroll the screen around while pinch-to-zooming. probably conserves CPU, but I prefer to be able to recenter while zooming.

Everything that came with the ROM appears to work.

Probably going to nandroid this ROM up and go back to CM7.

Seems the same, not much different... 3.0 out yet?

i have my doubts that sense 3.0 will ever be officially released to our beloved evo. but there are a few roms that are out that have sense 3.0. head on over to xda to check some of them out. some of them are still in its early stages so be sure to read the op carefully for each of them. i'm on mikg v1.1 right now. it is sense 2.1 with a lot of sense 3.0. pretty nice so far.

I flashed that last night and am liking it enough to possibly keep it for a while.....I love AOSP roms but some of the new sense stuff in this is really nice.
