Root From Hero to Epic

I'm giving my girlfriend my Hero and I'll be getting an Epic. What's the best way to move all of the info from phone to phone? I know I can move music files and the rest via SD card, but will I be able to run my latest Titanium backup on the Epic and have it reinstall all programs reliably? And do I need to root (my Hero was rooted) before I do that? Will the market take care of it automatically? Is that more than enough questions?

Also, I want to allow her to keep the programs that I've loaded on the phone. She'll be porting her number to that phone. What's the best way to keep the Hero the same as it is now, since all my programs are tied to my Google account?

titanum back them all onto her sdcard and then when you wipe the phone for her to use, she can then just reinstall em. but yes you will need to root the epic to use t-backup but other then that it should work just fine

Thanks! That leads to another question. I think I'll buy a new SD card for the Epic. Do I have to partition it in order to use it on the Epic - keeping in mind that I'll probably root the phone the first day I have it.

Glad to be here! I remember you from the Hero section, IIRC. Wasn't it necessary on the Hero to partition the SD card in order to use Apps2SD? Not necessary on the Epic, eh?

Yeap!

The latest update is 2.2 which enables native storage on the SD card (without root or partitioning). Though, to be honest, compared to the NEED on the Hero I don't FEEL the need to do it on the Epic.

It's amazing how much better/faster the phone is, isn't it!

No idea yet, since I haven't purchased it yet. Probably two more weeks or so, once my girlfriend's contract is up with AT&T.

Any reason you are going Epic instead of Nexus S or Evo or Evo Shift (or waiting for the Evo 3D or rumored Galaxy S 2)? Just curious

All of those phones were on my short list. No others. I have been rifling through any "this phone vs this other phone" threads like a madman for a week. Having no bias toward any of the phones, I was able to read reviews and comparisons without favoring anything from the start. Everything I read pointed me back toward the Epic. Clearly you can't really go wrong with the Nexus S or the Evo, but Epic users seem to be more content with their purchases than those who purchased the Evo or Nexus. Works for me. The only thing I might miss is the HDMI on the Evo and the quicker OS updates on the Nexus, but I'm sure I'll get along

I haven't tried DLNA so I can't comment. I don't even know if it works!


Going to the Epic makes me realize how much I disliked Sense. Sure, it had some great features but as a launcher I couldn't stand it. I also have an Evo (wife's phone) and get the chance to tinker with it regularly. For my likes and dislikes, the Epic is the clear winner.

I wish that the Epic had a better development community. This area, quite frankly, is very... ummm.... almost nonexistant. That being said, I simply want a deodexed ROM. I'll remove what I want and theme it myself. I cannot, however, fix the problems (which our developers have been good at).

For me, the selling point was the screen. Bright, crisp and lots of colors. The Evo, as an example, had less colors than the Hero. I'm huge into photography so for me that was an issue. The colors on the Epic aren't always correct though (navy looks dark green). I also feel the Epic has a better camera for normal use although I do prefer the flash on the Evo.

The physical keyboard was the feature that I didn't care about. Surprisingly, I find that even though I don't always use it that it is a pleasant feature to have.


Of the options available, I would love to get a Nexus. It is not perfect either though (no sd card is a biggie to me). I have an Evo (doesn't wow me and I don't need a kickstand). Brother has the Evo Shift (smaller screen makes it feel so small).

Do you all think that this is something an updated radio could fix? Are you aware of these issues, Kelmar? If so, what's making the Nexus S so much more appealing to you than the Epic? Just curious, I don't want to get stuck with a lemon, and I don't mind modding the Epic in order to have a "pure google experience." I have loved my hero since rooting it and getting rid of the sense UI, but the hardware is just so outdated now.

The pure google experience and TIMELY updates are my reasons. I have heard of the poor reception (doesn't affect every phone from what I've read) and slow 4G (not an issue where I live ).

Unfortunately, the Epic still doesn't have full CM6 or CM7 and frankly, the development of the Epic is... ummm... lacking.

I love my Epic though, don't get me wrong. I just like new phones!
