i really want Gingerbread 2.3 on my DHD. however, i don't actually know to get it. i don't know all the processes i need to complete, also i am worried i will lose things such as, pictures;text messages;contacts etc.. (there is some valuable information) i was wondering if anyone could help me and explain what i need to do to keep everything on my phone and run gingerbread 2.3. Also right now, i am running android version 2.3.3 & HTC sense version 2.1.

would seriously appreciate help. thankyou :)

That's vanilla android 2.3/gingerbread. You're running the same firmware as the phone in the video, but you have HTC sense which replaces the UI and introduces a number of new apps and widgets.

You can install vanilla android by rooting and installing a custom rom. Or, if you're looking for a less drastic solution, you can get many of the things such as the keyboard or homescreen without doing that.

The video you linked to was probably made when HTC hadn't released gingerbread and a custom vanilla rom was your only option on the DHD.

It is pretty confusing at first. Trust me when you're not the first person I've seen in the last few months wondering why our version of gingerbread didn't look like that.

as in like this because right now, my phone is completly different to this :S and im kinda new to this stuff do dont take the mik :)

What you're looking at there is a rooted Desire HD, running a custom, non standard ROM. I'm not sure exactly what ROM that is, but that's "vanilla" Android, straight from Google as it would be on a Nexus 1 or Nexus S. HTC put their own overlay on it called Sense, which is why your handset looks different.

In order to get that, you would need to get a goldcard (if your device is network branded), downgrade, Root & get S-OFF, Get ENG S-OFF, install ROM Manager, then clockwork (you can install from inside ROM Manager), choose your ROM, back up your existing one, then flash which ever new one you chose.

There are alternative ways to get the look and feel of vanilla gingerbread without actually doing all that though. There's the Gingerbread keyboard, Gingerbread Wallpaper and a Gingerbread Launcher which should go a long way to giving you the look and feel of Vanilla Gingerbread (similar to what you saw in the video).

Test the alternatives first, see if you like what they offer. Then if you decide you want to root, install a custom ROM etc, make sure you read all the links in the first paragraph, fully understand what you're doing and post here if you have any queries before you start. It's relatively risk free, but there are obviously always risks and by doing even the first step in the process, you've voided your warranty.

Bet thats the easiest question you have answered in a while mate.

Aye, it was at first.

Edit - And Xyro got in there before me again!

El Presidente thanks for that, really appreciate it. i'd rather run the actuall vinilla operation system thing rather than just have parts of it, but it seems way to complicated for me and my desire hd is starting to bore me :/ thats the only reason why i want to change it up. if anyone can get me a step by step guide on how to do it i would really appreciate it!!!:D

There is no easy to read, step by step guide unfortunately, it's just a simple case of following the instructions given in the links below. Read over them ALL, very carefully to make sure you understand what's required and what it is you're doing. None of the steps are very difficult, but you're messing with a

im gonna take your word for it and not get vinilla BUT is there any way of removing htc sense 2.1?

i seriously appreciate your help, thank you!

If you're not happy going down the root road, then I'd do as El P says and try a different launcher.

I am currently using one of the one's that was mentioned in El P's post just a couple up (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex&feature=search_result) with one of the Go Launcher themes (think it's called black glass, or something similar)... I chose it, just to give my phone a bit of a different look and, so far, think it's pretty sweet - I will probably change at some point, but that's the beauty of android... it is soooo easy to change how it looks :)
