Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Is there any way to add a "Restart" phone soft button on the home screen? I've been wanting that forever, and now we finally have the functionality anyway.

With a restart/soft reset button on my screen, NoLock, and Screen Off and Lock(for the cool old school tv power off animation).....I'll never have to touch the power button again, which would make me happy.

So far so good using Gingerbread the last few days. Things feel a little smoother when using the phone and battery life is better without me changing anything.

With that said I'm a little ticked that HTC doesn't offer vanilla Gingerbread if they aren't going to update the Sense interface to the latest version. At this point a stock Gingerbread experience is better then the HTC experience.

this is what i've noticed since updating. the thing i've noticed is that as many others, shootme doesnt work, which kinda sucks since i really love that app. i guess a root for is in my future which i can do since i rooted my epic. coming from the epic i always had the high percentage screen display so to be honest i didn't even think this was an issue or cause for concern on the evo until it was mentioned as a bug with the update. i dont have any issues with the voicemail just yet. when it intially booted up after updating there was no voicemail notification nor when i did a battery pull to reboot to test it out. my memory stayed the same so thats good (205 mb of free space). i do have a question if i move some of my apps to the sd card will they launch from there or will i have problems using them from the sd card? i know while some apps can be moved to the sd card they have problems working from there. also what is that new app in the drawer the downloads app? i noticed that one and of course the telenav app (which it looks like it replaced sprint nav). i also noticed that the app for the desk clock is gone and now its in the actual clock app and the search people app is gone too...not that ive ever used it and my usb does charge my phone when plugged into my laptop not just when i plug it in the outlet so thats a plus. so the only thing is my shootme.... boo hoo lol

Mon, I'm assuming this procedure still works well for Gingerbread? My phone was starting to run a little slow/buggy but it seems to have improved since the Gingerbread update. Before the update I was seriously considering a reset and reinstall. Do you think that's helpful for general phone use?

I'll need to go thru at some point, cross-check all links and references and provide settings update for Gingerbread, but I know it works - I've been recommending it for other Android brands and the UK Gingerbread updates and people are coming back amazed it was that simple to fix things.

Also, do you think the need for an App Killer is gone since the update? It seems like you were against it for Froyo.

I'm against killers because they go against Android task management, no change there. I assess quite a bit of beta apps that interest me - if one starts misbehaving, I'll use the built-in app killer on it (usually just before deciding an app has to be uninstalled anyways) - and I've had malicious web sites take my browser to a crawl. I chalk that up to an odd use case, and then I'll use the built-in killer under settings->applications to force close it.

You might want to keep it handy as you find any non-Gingerbread-ready apps misbehaving - or just uninstall the app until they have a Gingerbread version.

If you have carrier bloatware giving you grief that you're tempted to auto-kill, the better solution is to lurk the Evo's All Things Root forum until they have a root exploit for this revision, then root the phone and either freeze or delete the bloatware.

Auto-killers are a drug for Android - the more you use them, the more your phones needs them.

Holds true for Gingerbread, too.

Yeah no kidding. However, if the screen is off what button besides the power button do you select to get the phone back on?

i skimmed thru the issues, and hadnt seen this one yet...

since the update, my google talk app will not work. i hit the icon, and it bounces me right out.

i might grab one of the all-in-one IM apps for now, but i like using the native google app for chatting. anyboddy else experiencing this? or have an idea how to fix?

ive searched here, and googled to no avail. thanks in advance!

*EDIT*
looks like all it took was for someone to IM me...now i can open and use talk like before. solved. :D

So if you wanted to lock, have the screen off & then screen on what do you enable first (what order)?

Esp. without using the hard power button.

Just install NoLock, disable locking screen in the app. Add the NoLock widget to the home screen and you can use that button to turn off phone. Then you can also use volume rocker to wake phone up as well.

Thanks eSanto. I get it now.
My original thought was that it would allow me to use the volume rocker to turn on the screen even if it is locked.

But guess not. Oh well still having the volume rocker functionality is better than a hairline fracture on the power button!

You can no longer easily toggle GPS off and on. If you use a profile manager like EasyProfiles it won't change the state of the GPS because it now wants to use an intermediate screen asking about wireless networks, location settings, and GPS satts every time it wants to toggle.

Perhaps increased GPS on time is a factor in those experiencing increased battery consumption.

________
Added rant...

Really missing shoot me, although for the life of me all Androids should have a native 2 button screen capture like on the IOS or what Samsung does for their droids.

1) I'm getting the New Voicemail notification (says I have 15 messages) and after clearing the notification, it shows back up about 30 minutes later.

2) As of last night, I constantly get the "Gmail (process com.google.android.gm) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." error and have to force close. Tried all sorts of cache clearing/app uninstalling, rebooting, restarting, and the error remains. This is not good, as i can't stand the HTC stock mail program.

So far so good I suppose. I, like many others was hoping for more of a chance rather than a "under the hood" update but hopefully they release a sense update soon and give us some more cool GB features.

A question I have is about Shoot me. Couple questions actually. Is its sole function to take a screenshot of your phones screen? If thats all it does why would sprint, htc, whoever not want it to work if your not rooted? Also, why is is so important to people that they would use that as their main reason not to update? It seems like a neat program I suppose but in reality, fairly worthless. How often do you really screenshot your phone and who really cares what is on that screenshot besides you? And why can't you just look at your phone? it is yours after all. Do people save pictures of their phones as they change things like parents taking photos of their growing children? lol.

For all those that have been having all these bugs, have any of you hard reset your phone to possibly clear out all those errors? Just curious. Not saying it will resolve the issues, but just a thought.

I tried the hard reset yesterday. Still getting the bogus voice mail notification. My custom icons on my launcherpro dock have turned into white crosses. Wishing I hadn't dl'ed ginger, maybe the rumored second update Bluescreen spoke of will fix the issues.
Otherwise I'm going to root this pig as soon as there is a way to do so.
