I didn't see an official thread for this ROM so I thought I'd start one.

This is a gingersense ROM with Sense 2.0 and a few sprinklings of Sense 3.0 for a very slick-looking interface.

It can be downloaded here:

[ROM] Nils' Business GingerSense - (6/6/2011 V1.) Android 2.3.3 - Sense 2.1/ Some 3.0 - xda-developers

Features list:

  • Extended Power Menu (with 4 in 1 reboot)
  • Quick Settings tab in notifications menu
  • HTC Kingdom lockscreen with buttons and themes - Change in Personalization
  • Sense 3.0 MMS/SMS application
  • Sense 3.0 USB Menu
  • Sense 3.0 Task Manager
  • Polaris Office (replaces QuickOffice)
  • Colorized Icons (Based on mine plus thanks to various XDA users)
  • Latest Google apps from market
  • ROM Manager
  • SuperUser
  • DSP Manager (EQ)
  • Rooted
  • DEODEXED
  • ZipAligned
  • Check Settings > Applications for what can easily be removed

Note that Nils states that you MUST do a complete and full wipe to install this ROM. Some of the reported bugs seem to go away when people go back and do a FULL wipe and then install from scratch. Others have reported that Titanium restore has bonked it as well (assumably from restoring settings and not just apps). Bottom line: be careful what you restore.

Here are a couple of HIS screenshots:

I have installed version 1.4 which was released 6/6/11. There were a couple of issues people were having trouble with in previous builds. (I had them as well) that seem to be resolved in the latest build. So far it is rock-solid - totally usable as a daily driver.

I'll continue testing but if you like Sense, you really should give this ROM a try as it is very, very well done.

I have had those Titanium restore issues. Every time I tried to restore my apps it gave me issues, such as wouldn't restore, and just sat on 0%. I made sure that I was not backing up settings or restoring settings.

I have used Titanium to restore on Nils' Business GingerSense 1.0, 1.2, 1.3 and now 1.4. A couple of ground rules.

1. The only system settings I would dare "restore" are: (1) Wifi networks; and (2) Bluetooth pairings. Otherwise, one should never restore system data when moving between ROMs.

2. When you start a restore, leave the Incredible alone until the restore is done. If you try to do anything else with the handset, the restore will hang and timeout.
I suggest restoring in "stages." First the really important stuff (Root Explorer, Astro, your SMS client if you're not using stock, your email client if you're not using stock.) Then the stuff you need to get back to restore operability and enjoyment (i.e. Angry Birds). Then look at the stuff that you have that you you're sure about. You'll find you don't restore some things.

By the way, overhead is far lower on GingerSense than on Froyo. I have had to cut some apps loose to preserve space in that 768 megabyte space, since the ROM takes so much more of it.

I'm running the Rom now and loving it. Great job, it runs beautifully.

One thing, though...is there a way to keep my Google sync from automatically downloading all of my apps? I have limited 3g connectivity here at work and it is murdering my battery and completely bogging down my phone. I would prefer to just use titanium instead.

To fix this, go through the initial setup but when it asks for your google email, skip it. Go to privacy, check the "back up data" option and it will unlock the option to not automatically restore. THEN go to market and it will ask you to register again. Put in your gmail account and it won't auto restore.

Has anyone gone from CM7 to this rom? I'm wondering if i will be able to restore data from titanium backup without any problems.

I've gone from CM7 to Nils Business Gingersense and back at least 3 or 4 times. You MUST NOT back up system data. I've had no trouble with apps+data only (one of my games didn't restore for some reason the first time but I fixed it and it has been alright since). Titanium has kept my GO SMS messages and angry birds save files intact along with robo defense and a couple of others that I'd hate to lose. You also have the option of just doing a nandroid backup right before you wipe and try a new ROM... If you don't like it, restore the nand and it's like you never left.

I got this rom all set up last night and I am loving it. I'm surprised how well some of the 3.0 features ported to the Inc.

So far everything runs pretty smoothly. However...

If i get an incoming call while my screen is on, my phone app immediately FCs and i can't accept the call. This may have something to do with the black dialer addon? I'm not sure because i didn't receive any calls before i flashed the addon. If I receive a call when the screen is off it seems to work fine.

When i rebooted last night, it did more of a hot restart and only loaded my notification bar. I couldn't pull it down or anything. A battery pull fixed it right up.

Do any of you really believe in this Sense ROM? This is ROM is garbage. First of all it doesn't come close to CyanogenMod. Secondly, its slow. Oh, and it's slooooooooow.

Edit: Sorry if I sound like a douche but damn this ROM is slow. Daily driver me ass.

Some favorite quotes:

  2. Don't like it don't use it.

Are you running a ton of apps? I thought it was slow at first (1.1) but after moving up to 1.4 I see very little difference in performance between 1.4 and CM7. I don't have any of the friendstream, twitter, facebook, or any of the other "social" apps running so that may be a reason. I have about 30 apps total installed from the market. About a dozen utilities such as ROM manager and Titanium along with about a dozen different games.

Truly the phone is very crisp and very responsive. If you are experiencing slowness, it must be something specific that is eating up internal memory or something along those lines.

This ROM is most certainly a daily driver since 1.4... I love CM7 but this ROM is on my phone to stay for a while with no gripes whatsoever. I would not hesitate to put this on my wife or my daughter's phones as a daily driver for non-nerds.

The beauty and functionality of Sense 2/3 widgets and screens is a sight to behold....

The visuals on this Rom blow CM out of the water. Reminds me of XP compared to Win7. Sure, CM is faster, it's Vanilla so there's no extra baggage that's always associated with a Sense Rom. Set transition animations to high in Spare Parts helps some.

I missed CM7 for a couple days but I stuck with this b/c I like the graphics and the ability to get better looking widgets back and I decided I'd give it a fair shake. After some bump and go moments, I ended up preferring this Rom over CM. The final thing that influenced my decision is that Nils sticks with his Roms all the way through until they are perfect.
