iOS getting better updates lately?

As much as I think Android is better than iOS, doesn't it seem like each iOS update seems to include a lot more features and enhancements than the Android updates we've been getting. Not to sound ungrateful because we only just got Gingerbread, but from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread and the bug fixes inbetween, my Evo hasn't really changed much.

Maybe because iOS was lacking in the first place (and Android updates tend to focus on behind the scenes stuff), but each iOS update seems to make the experience all new with tons of new useable features. This is from an iPad owner's point of view.

With that said, I'm really looking forward to Ice Cream, because I think that's when Android will finally make a big jump.

Can you provide some specific examples? Not criticizing here; genuinely curious what some of the highlights of iOS5 are. I heard it was announced yesterday but at a glance, didn't see anything that blew me away, and I could have missed something.

(btw, as this is not related to the Evo, I'm moving it to the Android Lounge)

I understand that it can seem that we Android users are being neglected when Apple has just announced a bunch of updates, but for the most part the iOS 5 announcements were things we have had for a long time. I wouldn't worry too much about it. By the end of the year we'll get Ice Cream Sandwich, which is going to be pretty huge. I'll probably end up getting a new phone because of that announcement.

Sorry. I put this in the Evo folder because I was comparing the latest Evo GB update with iOS. Like I said earlier, iOS was missing a lot of features before, so when they add them (and Apple truthfully does a good job being detail oriented) it really changes things. Android, on the other hand, was already feature rich, so each update seems to be miniscule in comparison.

Some of the big updates from iOS 4.X were of course multi-tasking and multi-touch gestures at the OS level. You just use 4 fingers to swipe left and right to switch between apps in the background, or you can swipe up to bring the task manager/launcher, or 4/5 finger pinch to background the app and go back to the home screen. This is nothing special really, but coming from iOS 3.X with no multitasking, this was a huge leap in usability.

Another big feature is true 1080P HDMI gaming. You can connect your iOS device to your TV via HDMI, and have true (non-upconverted) 1080p rendered gaming experience while using your device as the control pad. Airplay (basically wireless streaming) is cool as well, but I never use it. Again, these are things Android can already do.

With iOS5, the feature I'm looking forward to is the notification center. Again, this is nothing new for Android. However, imagine if Android never had a pull down notification bar, and all of a sudden GB added that. I would be really excited. Basically, although Apple is behind in some areas, they are able to keep each iOS update exciting by spacing out their new features.

With Android, it feels like I already have everything, so I'm eagerly waiting for the next Google idea to truly blow my mind, and nothing's coming up that'll do that yet.

The truth is that this latest announcement by Apple wasn't that mind blowing. Sure, it's great for the iOS people to finally get some much needed features that the competition already had, but only the truly fanatical MacHeads would claim any of these features as "mind blowing" or "revolutionary".

One of my biggest complaints about Apple has been their cynical tactic of spacing out new features that should have been implemented long before they were finally released. It just shows that Apple Inc. doesn't think much of their customers.

LOL dude all the "new" features apple released are features Android users having been enjoying for over a year.

I agree! Apple is a dumb down fisher price phone for sure. I was bored with it within a month and in that month I jail broke it. I have had my HTC EVO 4G since the first of the year and cannot imagine being without it! iMessage=Google Talk. Google Talk has been around for years. The notification area, stolen from android. My EVO 4G has a mini hdmi port and the ThunderBolt can connect to a TV wirelessly, with IOS 5 you have to purchase an Apple TV box to connect it to your TV. I guess they belive Apple users should have an iLife and have the MacBook, AppleTV, iPhone, iPad, iCar, iBrain, etc.

I like Apples way of giving updates...(Not a fanboy, own experia play)

They provide a date, the handsets it will work on, what will be improved.

If i could change one thing about Android, it would be the way Google deals with manafactures...

Manafactures - Manafacture the phones
Google - Provides android 1 version.

I agree. The update system is sucky for Android.

It really stems from all the skins that the OEMs put on top of stock Android. It made sense in Android's early days when it was clunky and not too pretty, but it has grown a lot. I really hope that Ice Cream Sandwich is the beginning of the end of these skins. That would go a long way in making the updating system much more smooth.

The grass is always greener...

Better is always subjective. Are you simply refer to the improvement over prior versions or are there specific features in iOS5 that you wish were incorporated in Android? There's not much point in discussing the former IMO but the latter could be a meaningful discussion.

Not quite if you actually bother to read the details. Take notifications, for example. A lot of people assume that iOS just swiped Android's notification system but iOS5 notifications offer some added functionality.

Of course, if you oversimply two things they'll look the same at some point.

I'd like this, google puts vanilla Android on them then let the development community like xda design UI's for people to use if they want a custom UI.

I agree Apple is all about logo's and branding, some of their things are pretty cool in design and some of the functions are cool, but they just want money and do not even have that much to offer for instance the iPhone 4 came out not to long ago and its not even 4g capable(not bashing apple just pointing out) and they are a decen company but they just try and brand everything and try to make everything apple and ask a lot of money for their products when we can get android powered things that do way more for the same price.
