Root HTC EVO 4G update help

I need help. I tried to update to Gingerbread to and I got a screen that shows the Android guy and a triangle with an exclamation point in it. There was no way to reboot my phone, so I had to take the battery out. I have wiped/factory default my phone and that was no help. I have search many sites and it is like they are speaking in code. I am a new user to Android. Everyone kept talking about how awesome it was to root your phone so that they could uninstall apps and flash custom roms. I think rooting the phone is the reason I am not getting the update. I rooted the phone by going to www.goodandevo.net and followed their instructions. I have attempted all day to follow their other instructions to unroot my phone, but when I load the PC36IMG.zip through hold power and volume down. I get a Main Version older, update fail. I have tried to google search that and all I come up with is stuff about the DROID X. I have an HTC EVO 4G. Anyone got any detailed instructions to help me. I just want the update and I want my phone back to the way it was when I got it. I thought about calling Sprint, but who knows what they will say. I have thought about loading the Gingerbread update for rooted users, but I lose my 4G. Any ideas?

First off, take a deep breath and relax a little. There are some things that we can try and do to get you back to where you were or possibly unrooted if that is where you want to go. Don't let a little bump in the road make you gun shy though. We need some info first. What hboot version do you have?(power off then hold volume down+power til the white hboot screen appears) Do you still have s-off at the top? What recovery are you using?(Clockwork Mod or Amon RA)

so you have s-off or s-on? if s-on then:
ok so it looks like you have s-on but a custom recovery. so this is what you want PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radi..zip this will give you a stock recovery as well as a stock rom. so this what you need to do:
1.download the file
2.rename it so that the file is named PC36IMG. easiest way is just to delete the"_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radi.." part of the name. just remember not to add a ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file over to the root (not in any folder)of the sd card.
4.power off and press and hold power+vol down
5.this will get you to hboot(bootloader). hboot should automatically scan for the file.
6.select yes to update
7.select to reboot

and now you are unrooted. now you can accept the ota.

you do not necessarily need to unroot. you can probably still get s-off by running unrevoked again. there is a stock rooted OTA rom out now. but that is up to you either way, this forum is here if you have more questions.

Hi,

I have the same issue as the OP - tried to install the new Gingerbread update and failed because I rooted my phone to get Barnacle. Here's what my phone shows:

Supersonic evt2-3 Ship S-off
HBOOT 2.10.001
RADIO 2.15.00.11.19
Recovery is Clockwork Mod 2.6.0.1
I'm guessing if I choose to unroot my phone Barnacle will stop working, but I kinda want the Gingerbread update. Is there a way I can have both?

You still have the custom recovery and s-off so you should be able to wipe and flash the stock rooted rom available in the 2.3 update thread.

Hey folks--

I'm having the same issue. I love being able to do wireless tethering for free, and the screenshot app and Titanium are cool, but I also sorta feel like I might want to go back to just being able to get the Sprint updates instead of fiddling with settings I only sort of understand. :)

Here are my answers for those original questions...I hope we can get me to where I can get the OTA update.

My stats when I go to hboot:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHP S-OFF
HBOOT: 2.10.0001

I selected recovery in that HBOOT screen and it gave me the htc EVO 4G screen, then went into ClockworkMod Recovery v 2.6.0.1.

So: If I follow these instructions, will it work? Will it completely reset my phone, or just set it up unrooted? I'd hate to lose data like photos and such, but I don't mind having to reinstall apps.

Thanks so much in advance--you all are super helpful.

ETA: I already tried to install the OTA update. I hope that doesn't screw up the process.

ok so a couple of things first do you want to unroot? or we can get you a rooted but stock OTA rom. remember if you unroot you will have to wait until the new hboot can be rooted. just follow the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide in the unrooting section if you do want to unroot.

when you say that you tried to install the update, does that mean you tried and accept the ota? that could really cause some issue if you do.

Yes, I did.

I'm 90% on the side of unrooting, because I'm afraid that fiddling too much is going to lead to long term issues. But if I can flash the new stock version without any problems, I might do that instead. I just want to be able to update once, and have it work, without any fuss.

Hmm.

Advice? Thoughts?

ETA: I was able to "discard" that OTA update so that's good, right?

Hello all. OK, I have an Evo, was able to unroot it (ready to be able to root it back tho hopefully soon on Gingerbread), updated and my phone is working great. However, yesterday I had my daughter download the Gingerbread update and she told me it installed but I don't know if she did or not. Today, while she was sending a text her phone powered down on its own and rebooted. However, it will only get as far as the "Sprint 4G" logo then it reboots again. It will not load. This is not a rooted phone. I went into the recovery and was able to see the Hboot screen (once) then it tried to unpack the file then I got the Phone with the "!" triangle. I am assuming the update is corrupt...any thoughts on how I can get her phone up and running again??

If its unrooted, I would take it to a sprint store and see what they can do with it. There isn't much for us to do unless you have s-off and since you updated to 2.3, I am assuming you dont.

so you have s-on right? what is your hboot? power off (if it is not already) then press and hold power+vol down. it should say it in the top left of the screen.

Supersonic EVT2-3 Ship S-on.
Hboot is 2.16.0001
Microp-o41f
radio-2.15.00.05.02

I took it to Sprint and the first store I went to said that I had to take it to a repair center and they could redo it back to factory. Went to the repair center and they won't touch it because over this past weekend, she dropped it and it has a nice crack on the screen and they won't work on anything with "physical damage," (15 year olds...had it on her chest while tanning and forgot it was there and it fell on the bottom right corner and cracked the screen from the Home button all the way across to the right about an inch up the screen). Said I would have to do an insurance claim for $100...really need help now...

PS I tried pushing PC36IMG on it and it aborted because it was an older version it said...

man, that is lame of them not to help you out with your phone situation. i mean, it is not a hardware issue. yeah unfortunately you have an hboot where an exploit has not been found yet. and making changes through a ruu or PC36IMG will not work as your securities are turned on.

well two things i can think of that you can try doing:
1.try another repair store and see if you can get lucky with a really nice tech.
2.try waiting until an exploit is found and root your phone. (not sure if it is possible with what the state of your phone is)

Yeah, the lady at the store said the techs won't even touch it since it is cracked. My ex has one and she thinks she is eligible for her upgrade (for some reason my daughter and my ex have both had bad experiences with their Evo's...mine, has worked fine with the exception of stuff I did to it. OK, different question regarding mine...I unrooted to get the upgrade but I would really like to have my root access back. Any news on being able to root Gingerbread yet? Another question. I know when my phone is off and I turn it back on it boots up way faster than before. But I noticed that there are times that I can't get into the recovery screen...does the new power off basically put it in a standby mode for a certain amount of time??
Is there any way to turn off the security features on my daughter's phone without it being able to boot up? (Can I push a zip file to turn it off?)

yeah unfortunately no new exploit found as of yet. just stay tuned to the rooting channel here on this forum. you will know when we have root access to the latest hboot.

as far as your phone goes, the new ota introduced a new feature called fastboot. it is just that, however you cannot access hboot with that option on. to disable the fastboot feature go to your phone settings and then applications and uncheck the fastboot option.

Hey hey--

Any further thoughts on my situation?

so do you want to unroot or keep it rooted but have the rooted version of the ota? and you still have s-off and hboot 2.1, correct?

you can get the rooted version here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html. try the odexed version.

if you want to unroot, goto the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html and there is an unrooting section.
