Help Some question about sgs2 before switch from nexus s

So I have some question about that phone, I would like to switch for it from a nexus s.
-Is the phone coming with 2.3.3? if yes does it have the gtalk video call like nexus s?
-Does it have the same effect like nexus s when you turn it off (tv like effect)
-Is the design of the phone body easy to rail off like the black glossy nexus s!?!
-Is the screen as easy as the nexus s to rail off too?
-Anyone tried slingplayer on the s2? is the streaming good on both wifi and 3g?
-What about battery life and app compatibility at this time?

what you like and dislike about that s2? thank you!

-ships with 2.3.3 so no it does not have gtalk video. if i remember correctly, this is part of 2.3.4. however, i bet you can with root
-no tv effect. i'm positive you can attain this with root because there are some mods i've seen
-not sure what you mean by "rail off"
-same, not sure what you mean by "rail off"
-haven't tried sling player. i really need to get my amazon apps back on here. i had it before. may test this later today
-app compatibility is fine. battery life... i avg at least 2 days...

way too many things to list that i LOVE about it. nothing i dislike thus far honestly. major negs for my Evo were just battery life and a little lag. lag isn't present on the SGS2

edit: also, you can't "turn off" TouchWiz. you can either install another launcher to run on top of it, or you can root it and install a ROM where someone has taken it out and added another launcher

so if i change for the galaxy s2 am I gonna hate or like the touchwiz interface, or anyone tried the launcher pro or anything?

Hey bud, i'll try and answer a few of your points.

1. yes it comes as 2.3.3. Cant say ref video calls, i dont use it. I thought i read somewhere it wont be coming until 2.3.4 but like i said its not a feature i use so i cant say for sure.
2. No it doesnt have the effect your referring to when it switches off

3 & 4. Sorry not to sure what you mean ref the screen. its a flat and almost 4.3 inch screen and i must say its the best looking fone screen to date, and by some margin too. Its just plain gawjus, honestly, for me its a bigger feature than the 1.2ghz power house dual core cpu. I cant rate this screen enough.

Again not too sure what you mean ref the body of the phone but my opinion is its very nice. Before buying i was worried about the cheap plastic feel, but its completley different to what i expected. Yes its made from plastic but its so solid and so thin (and therefore feels so nice in the hand) that you will forget very quickly that its made from plastic. Well thats how i feel anyway. It just looks and feels so much nicer than i was expecting, how a premuim fone should feel.

5. As for touchwis, i like it. Its super snappy and very easy to navigate. I have also installed launcher pro but i prefer touchwis to be honest. Like the other guy said though, if you dont like touchwis theres a handfull of other launchers you can try instead.

From my user experience, no your not going to dislike it, as i really like it, and i love the fact i can change it up with other lauchers if i get bored. But this is something thats going to come down to personnel preference i suppose.

I would suggest looking at a few video reviews on youtube and paying attention to how they navigate the UI, you should be able to see enough to know if your going to like it or not.

6. i dont use slingplayer so cant comment. I will say on this note that i havent had any issues with wifi on anything else ive tried, from youtube to flash videos on web pages. 3g performance has been no different to my previous fone so i imagine it will be the same (if your using the same network and in the same area). Obviosuly this will change if you change service provider or in different location.

7. battery life i would say is pretty average for a smart fone. Its nothing special, gets me through the day on meduim usage and requires charge at night. Things like games and GPS eat the battery up pretty bad. As i say its your usual smart phone battery, it wont be any worse than ur nexus.

Apps wise i havent had any issues so far. Ive doanloaded a few games (gt racing, real football, lets golf, snes emulator and a few roms) some other things like google earth, noled, amazon, quadrant, dominos, facebook, twitter, compass, stopwatch, imdb, ringdriod, angry birds, adobe reader, beautiful widgets, fancy widget, antivirus, hd wallpaper and i havent had any issues with any apps yet. although thats not to say there isnt any compatibility issues, i just havent come across problems yet and ive got quite a few things.

What i like:

1. Its very fast. Navigating around the UI is a breeze and so smooth no matter how many things i have open or how many widgets i have running.

2. The internet - For me, the best implementation of a mobile browser to date. Its fast, smoother than apples safari (honestly theres no lag what so ever) and flash works perfect. Flash works so good (as samjpullen said on his video) it make me think apple could include flash within there web browser, its that good.

3. ROM space - 2gb

4. 16gb internal storage right off the bat, without having to worry about getting an sd card (minus the space needed for the OS etc of course, which brings it down to about 11.5gb i think)

5. RAm 1gb. Ram available to user 500 - 600mb, which is loads. It helps keep things running silky smooth even if you have a load of things open at the same time.

6. Suprisingly, the look and feel of the fone. Being plastic i thought i wouldnt like it but i love it. it feels very solid and premuim, despite being plastic, and the thinness makes it feel really nice when holding it. Oh and its very light.

7. The screen, again for this is the best screen on a smart phone to date (even the iphone 4). Everything just pops out at you, the blacks are amazing. absolutley beautiful screen.

Theres alot more i like but those things stand out the most

Things i dont like:

1. it gets very hot at times when doing certain things, such as playing a premuim game for example.

2. Slow wake up time when you unlock the phone. Its annoying as it takes about 1.5 sec and theres a small delay in showing the homescreen pic. You'll see the clock and then the wall paper will pop up after it. Its only for a spit second but its annoying as it takes a little polish off the phone.

Thats about it really. the main thing is the heat it generate when you do intensive things on it, probably because its so thin. But for me, i think its something i can live with given hw good the phone is at everything else!

I would suggest checking out samjpullen on youtube. He has posted a load of great videos on the different features of the phone. He even has some comparing it to the sensation and desire s so defo go check those out.

Hope this helps bud

i'm really trying to keep an eye on xda for a fix for this. it's not annoying to me tbh, but if i could change it i would. i'm sure someone is looking into it though. this is what will "break the camels back" and cause me to finally root. i just haven't gotten bored with the phone yet which is awesome.

hey, no probs. i was the same as you a few weeks ago, not sure whether to get it or not and would av appreciated some decent advise myself back then!

ref the glass, ive done a check and the nexus s i dont believe has gorilla glass, which is what the sgs2 has, and is suppose to be better at resisting scratches, so in theory it should be a lil harder to scratch your screen up this time if you did get this fone.

ive had mine for about a week or so, really babying it, and ive just checked my phone and i dont have a single scratch .... yet. touch wood.

although saying that at the end of the day its a pane of glass and and decent hits or scrapes will leave some sort of mark i imagine.

yeh i think it just stands out because the rest of the phone is so snappy. i believe it has something to do with the processor clocking it self down so that it saves battery life when not being used. If thats the case you would think a fix could be made available.

Suppose its just getting that balance just right between performance and battery life.

Although i could be completley wrong, who knows. Hopefully im not ;-D

yep. most think Gorilla Glass is scratch proof for some reason lol but it's just scratch resistant. i'd recommend a screen protector. i have a Clarivue on mine which is crap because of the cuts. awaiting an SGP Steinheil to arrive in the mail next week.

as far as the back is concerned, i always get something to protect the back - usually a case-mate barely there which you can find in either the US or Euro.

i'm also awaiting a free case from a company that has asked me to do a review for them which covers all sides and the back. pretty excited about it, too :)

And without a case, how would you rate the body* of the sgs2 about scratch resistant (my glossy black cheap plastic nexus s would give 0 out of 10)

*Body: not the back plate but the rest of the body, it apprear glossy on some picture

the sides are what i believe you're referring to. i haven't put a scratch there yet, or even on the metal trim (although there are two very tiny hard to see scuffs, it was shipped to me this way). i'm not sure what the onyx gray colored trim is made of, but the blackish part (before you get around to the back) reminds me of the plastic back of the Nexus S. i can't really give a rating since i haven't scratched it and have had my phone in a case since i've been carrying it around. i know a lot want to keep the slim profile, but putting a case on it like the case-mate or other will keep it very slim.

if anyone is worrying about scratching it, whether it be the screen, back, sides, etc, i would recommend getting some sort of case and screen protector. you can never be too safe with such an expensive and luxurious device.

SGP Steinheil - Oleophobic notes:
-this is THE screen protector to get if you want a correct and perfect cut for this phone. not only that, but it definitely resists smudges by your fingers and when you get some oils on there, it's easy to wipe away. it took me about 5min to install. i got a piece of lint under it on the side so i did a quick lift and used a sticker that came with it for that. then i got another one under it trying to get the first piece of lint. after that, it was perfect. best experience with a screen protector hands down :)

edit: my apologies or getting back to the thread so late. i was at Bonnaroo for the weekend
