Popular 3D Images - Like the ones from Mars Rovers

I've come across various 3D images of things, like the huge collection from the Mars Rovers. I wonder if we could convince NASA or JPL to convert them to .mpo's or the proper format for viewing on the 3vo. Anyone know what it would take? Huge email campaign or can it be done with the images available on line? Any other such projects come to mind?

to undo the anaglyph coloring, you need to decouple the stereo images, which isn't possible once they are overlayed. So you would need the original source file with original layers intact.

Anaglyph is definitely a DIY process with some basic photoshop skills. It's just swapping red channels of the stereo images and then overlaying the result.

Yeah, I figured those images are flattened and can't be converted. I wonder if they put the raw images out there for public consumption and conversion.

Actually, I think it would be a good thing for them to promote themselves. They have a new mars mission scheduled to launch at the end of the year and it is way over budget and in need of more funding!

I get those Sprint news texts and one of them was saying they are planning on a manned mission to Mars by 2017(?) with the new space crafts they are making to replace the retired shuttles.

Sorta... We are paying for the R&D. That will never happen. The rise of companies like SpaceX threatens the Lockheeds and Boeings. So they lobbied congress and NASA to come up with a new project for them to never complete while sucking us dry.

Found this for ya:

Mars and Solar System Exploration Stereo Pairs

Looks like those are designed for cross-eye viewing.

But there's no reason why you couldn't convert those to jps or mpo and have the future phone render them for you without the required cross-eye eye strain.

Only thing to remember is if the stereo pair is designed for cross-eye viewing, you'll need to switch left and right images at the time of assembling the mpo. A good conversion tool should give you the option. If in doubt, try both ways. One of them will look "more" 3D than the other.
