To those who have returned their Nexus

I am going to return my Nexus, but as I was reading the return information I became worried about something. I saw that they can tack on charges for damages or repairs that are necessary, and my phone has a small scratch on the screen.

I'm worried that if I return the phone now they will charge me some crazy fee to fix this scratch. Has anyone that returned their phone had an issue with this?

Edit: I just finished talking to HTC and they said that if there is a problem with the phone I will be notified and given the option of having it sent back. This is all I could ask for. This way I know that if the phone is taken it met the requirements and if not, I can take it back and accept that I rushed into this. Somehow I feel like I'm about to enter a customer support nightmare though...

You are trying to return a damaged product that is not in it's original condition. You should be lucky you can return it at all.

I used the phone everyday and took great care of it. It has always been in its sleeve and has never been dropped. Frankly, I have no idea where the scratch came from and it is in no way influencing my return.

Also, I'm not lucky that I can return it if a small scratch is going to cost me some amount of money that by all appearances I have no way of knowing about till it is charged. If I sent it back and they told me it was not in good enough condition I would pay to have it shipped back and that would be the end of it. Unfortunately I would have to deal with T-mobile at that point and everything would get complicated. That is why I am trying to figure out if this scratch I found should prevent me from returning the phone. I'm not trying to cheat the system, I'm trying to avoid a bunch of complications.

Seems a shame to return to it because of a small scratch. It's not that bad is it!

The scratch is so minor that you can't see it under normal conditions. You have to shine a fairly bright light on it and tilt the screen until it appears. I want to return the phone because all the issues with support are making me feel uneasy and I'm not sure if I'm ready to jump into the smartphone arena. I may buy a Nexus at a later point, but I would want to buy it unsubsidized so I can use it with my old plan that I would reactivate.

Well if there isn't anything wrong with your phone, then I don't see a reason to return it besides buyers remorse.

Exactly! I don't THINK there is anything wrong with the phone. I am just having buyer's remorse, in general, which is why they give you 14 days to play with it.

However, just because I don't think there is anything wrong with the phone doesn't mean that HTC won't. That is why I was wondering how strict they are and if this minor scratch is a huge issue or not. As for selling the phone, I'm either going to return it, or deal with the fact that I get stuck with it. I won't be selling it.

Edit: I'm just going to call HTC and ask them. I will update with what they say.

Why can't you do this with the current phone? Subsidized or not doesn't stop you from popping an existing SIM card into it.

When purchasing the phone at the subsidized price I was required to get a new plan. Using my old plan would require me to have two plans active. Perhaps I could just pay the rest of the cost on this current phone to have it unsubsidized and the reactivate my old plan. That is something I thought of, but I'm not sure how to make it happen and there is the whole issue that I can't get customer support.

Oh ok. You didn't mention that the N1 was a new line of service, or at least I missed it if you did. It would probably be cheaper to cancel your previous line if you don't mind switching over to the new number completely. I believe others have had success changing their "required" plan to a different one as well, but I'm not positive.
