Root BEST Gingerbread rom?

Ive been using MIUI for past 6 months now. Its ASOP, fast, relatively light and highly customisable with variety of themes to pick from. This rom is different from all the custom roms out at the moment.

lol GingaB, I'm not stalking your comments about MIUI I promise, but +1 for MIUI (I seem to +1 alot of your comments on MIUI I'm noticing :p) if you like theming then I pretty much reckon MIUI is the best ROM to theme, but not just theming, its just a solid all round, lovely looking ROM!

@SUroot, just out of curiosity, why have you never tried MIUI?

I hate the look. The style. The concept. The un-androidness of it.

I've tried most of the popular ASOP ROMs and currently enjoying CM7. It's fast (I guess we can say this to all ASOP ROMs), small enough to fit on Bravo CM7 table, full of CM tweaks, and very stable.
I loved Gingervillain and its quick updates, but it is a bit large for my taste. Redux, Oxygen, DevNull, CM7 Light are all very nice candidates to play with.

MIUI is nice, but just like SUroot, it didn't suit my view of a "good Android phone".

Sense ROMs are full of ...Sense. :D They are slow at OS updates, have lots of extras that I don't need, and seem to me always "heavy".

I'll say one thing - I LOVE the choice of ROMs that we Desire owners have at this moment! :)

That's what the homescreen is for - app shortcuts. I don't use the dock at all other than to get into the dialer
Different tastes - I dislike homescreens cluttered with app shortcuts. I have 4 on my main screen, but that's it. The rest are in a rotating dock, mostly in folders there. My homescreens are for information widgets.

It's not just phones - my computer desktops have no icons (app launchers, trash cans, whatever), they are just spaces I put windows on. I either use menus, hidden toolbars or launch things from terminals.

On Windows I use an app called fences. I create fences around shortcuts and group them. However, double click and all fences (and icons within) goi invisible. Was great.

Ubuntu, I have a shortcut to trash which I dont need and a shortcut to a network location which will disappear if I unmount. I havent actually really looked into getting rid of them, ut I dont want or need them

Apologies, there were too many posts I wanted to reply to, so I just did it as one big post.

I like redux. It's not stock (stock on the desire has sense). It's AOSP (vanilla).

Small, light, fast but slightly out of date currently

I was going to try this tonight :( Could you elaborate please?

im liking cm7.0.3 light edition atm very stable and small

What are the benefits (if there are any) of trying the light version for me, considering I don't have a custom partition on my internal memory. I was going to upgrade to CM7 (7.0.3 from 7.0.2) anyway, didn't even consider this light version.

[on Miui] I hate the look. The style. The concept. The un-androidness of it.

I wouldn't be so critical ;) I used it for a while, and I'm not so much a fan anymore. But there are some really fantastic features of those ROMS which you do not find on others. To name a few, the lockscreen is superb, the deep level of customisation built right into the UI, the theming is superior to anything else (anything from the lockscreen, icons and even the bootloader etc), the torch shortcuts (holding home to activate when the phone is asleep), the music controls, the camera and many many other things.

It is a great ROM, and I don't see why it isn't in keeping with android? I thought one of the major draws to android was the customisation. It is yet another option. It might not be to your taste (or mine atm), but it is an absolutely fantastic achievement and a really great ROM. Remember a hell of a lot of people seek an "iPhone look" ;)

Personally, I hated the widget system and the icons on the lockscreen when I had lots of apps. As you say, there was no point for me as I just used other launchers.

To anyone?

Since a lot of you here have custom alpharev partitions, I thought I'd ask 2 quick questions.

1. A lot of you have very small partitions, e.g. only enough for certain ROMS. I change ROM a lot (ranging from CM7 > GV > Miui > Sense etc). Is it possible to create a custom partition on my internal memory that would be big enough to still use each of those ROMS, but still gain more internal memory than stock (147mb).

2. If I did custom partition my internal memory, is it easy to revert back to the stock partition if I wanted to sell my Desire?

Thanks. :)

You installed recently, so I guess may have 11.04, which I've not used yet.

With 10.10 and the Gnome desktop you can remove these using the gnome configuration editor: open a terminal and type gconf-editor, expand apps/nautilus/desktop and there are tick boxes to control the visibility of these things.

Ah thats how I added trash. Thanks.

I'm on 10.04 as its supposedly best for compiling.

@williamj1

Redux hasn't been updated to 2.3.4 yet. Its still 2.3.3

There are 2 types of partitioning.

1) Alpharev partition tables
2) Custom MTD

You need alpharev S-ff for both. Alpharev is not custom. You flash a hboot partition table of which there are a few but you are stuck at that size unless you flash a different one.

Custom MTD you have to patch recovery and patch the boot.img of the rom

Custom is more work than alpharev but you get to choose the sizes.

When you sell your desire, RUU will remove all of this.
