Using Non-Original Batteries for Desire S

I'm looking at purchasing batteries from eBay (Made in China I guess). Are they reliable? Will they spoil my phone?

I don't have the Desire S, but whenever I've bought a "higher" capacity battery via ebay/China, for my Desire HD, I've always been disappointed.

Do you have any in mind?

There are many different ones on eBay. By disappointment, is it that the battery life is short? I'm more concerned about the compatibility. I'm afraid that such batteries may jeopardise my phone's integrity..

Incidentally, what is battery life like on the Desire S? I thought it was acceptable? (I hear 3 or so days on moderate usage).

Not acceptable for me, or for my usage. I'll get usually 4-5 hours on heavy constant usage (gaming, videos, web browsing etc.). Otherwise, it's usually about 10~12 hours, with rather frequent gaming and web browsing, especially during my break times at work.

There isn't a chance where I'll leave my phone alone for more than a few hours (except when I'm sleeping).

But when I leave it overnight starting at 100%, I can still get ~80% in the morning. I don't think it's bad according to industry standards, but for my kind of usage, it's far from acceptable..

Do you have Autosync on? Overnight, mine drops between 5-8%.

Yep I do. Why do you turn Wifi on overnight?

Just because with Gingerbread (and now with the GB based ROM I'm using), as long as the signal is wireless signal it makes little difference to battery life if I have WiFi on or not.

Even with autosync on, I don't think you should be using 20%(ish) battery overnight with the screen off.

I spotted these sometime ago:
Mugen HTC Desire S Extended Battery - 1800mAh

they're german made and not cheap, but I find that almost reassuring? has anybody tried them?

Mugen are generally regarded as being high quality, but never having tried them, I can't comment myself.

If it is, then how will it slide into the battery recess in the phone.

From experience A LOT of these higher capacity batteries are slightly bigger than stock and don't sit correctly in the phone. I linked to a pic of one I bought earlier in the thread, take a look.

That being said, Mugen are pretty reputable so hopefully those batteries are different.

My battery has arrived and I have put it in. It was a bit difficult at first sliding back the cover but then I cut of the platic tab that was on this battery and the cover went on without trouble.
Now it's on charge and they say that it should be charged, initially, for 12 hours but I am going out soon and so shall take it with me with, currently, presently about 80% charge.

You should really charge it properly on its first charge.

To be honest, I can't really tell. I will put back the standard battery and see whether I can see a noticeable difference.
I haven't bothered to do any scientific comparisons but find the 1800mAh battery gives me about 2/3 days under the conditons I use my phone.

If I get round to getting an external battery, that's what I'll be getting.

Unfortunately the person who failed to charge the battery up properly (and not bothered to condition it & calibrate it) to start with will now see no real difference. And has probably killed off a few cells.

The reason being, these batteries need to be conditioned. It's not as simple as charging them up and using them...

You really need to Google to find out how to, but having said that... if you don't condition them the first 2 to 3 charges then you will not have a correctly calibrated battery in your handset.

I have a 1950mah high capacity battery, but no noticeable difference to the stock version. I have a 3500mah battery in my Xperia Play handset and that came with a larger back cover (I know the Desire S cannot have this) but that was fully conditioned and calibrated over 3 charges and I can now get 2-3 days heavy usage out of it. Whereas to start with I was lucky to get 1 day.

The Desire S battery however, is a dissapointment and will always be that because the battery is limited due to being hidden behind the full aluminium body.
