yea , new to DX.....yes I am!

I was browsing DX accessories. I noticed some people talking about installing an hdmi "app" for the hdmi to work. Fill me in on this please.
I cant just plug up my appropriate cords and viola I can see all on my phone on the big screen. Or-actually movies from my sd card, netflix, movie streamer lite, etc.?

Need some insight. I'm kinda sayn...'hhmm:

Also, what is a good hdmi out there for the dx? Simply going to wally world or somplace like that will do?

The DX will display very few things through the HDMI port natively. So yes, you need an app if you want to play movies. There are two apps that I know of:
RealHDMI (Paid)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gmanapps.realhdmi&feature=search_result
External Display for the Droid X (Free)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.googamaphone.xternaldisplay&feature=search_result

And any micro-HDMI cable will work. Search for them on Amazon. You can get them for less than $5 shipped as opposed to $30+ in a store (if you can find one).

Monoprice.com has the cheapest cables around. You can get a micro hdmi->hdmi adapter for less than $3.

Which app will do a better job? Will the free app do just as good as the paid. I do believe in support of devs. like I have NFL network, will that "work" for either app. Netflix too, or other movie apps. Let me know. Thnx for the link to amazon. I ordered 3 for the price of 1/2 of 1. LOL

can you define "better"? this is a generalization and information will be skewed unless you give us some discussion points.

I don't think there's anything necessary to define based on this simple usage. All these apps do is output the screen display to a monitor. Based on that usage, his question is, "what is there to choose between the paid app and the free app?"

I have RealHDMI and am happy with it. It has several features for turning HDMI on and off, including using the proximity sensor and the tilt sensor, which is convenient - I can rest my phone on its back, turn HDMI on, and when I pick the phone up it will shut off again. Not bad.

I haven't used External Display much, but I don't believe it has any of the integration with the tilt/proximity sensors, so that's one thing RealHDMI has going for it.

Frankly, I'd just try External Display since it's free, see if it works well for you, and if you find it lacking, purchase RealHDMI.

I am trying external display and its showing my dx on screen(i get that) i understand the Dx dark screen. What's happening is my screen is going black and not playing anything. Then the Dx is "kicking " out of my hdtv and playing movies via my dx sound and all, not through my hdmi into my hdtv.
Would Real HDMI work better. I don't know what's the problem, please HELP. Solutions, etc. Netflix =no, my downloaded movies=no, BLACK SCREEN!
help.
