Not sure exactly what you are asking - Verizon doesn't charge specifically for the use of Gmail, they just charge you based on your "data plan".

If you mean "Can I use the Gmail app over WiFi only, to minimize (Verizon) data usage?", the answer is yes; the same thing is also true for the HTC e-mail app that comes with the phone - and that app has far better Exchange support than Gmail.

(About the best you can do with Gmail is either forward e-mail from Exchange or try to pull email from your exchange server using POP3 - which can be done, but it is very rare for an Exchange admin to allow that behavior). If you have Exchange, you should probably use the HTC e-mail app on the phone.

The difference is $44.99 enables use of microsoft exchange support. I heard you can access exchange email through gmail. If thats the case there's no need to pay this extra charge from Verizon. My question was, is this possible to do through gmail.

OK, Gotcha - I guess this somehow revolves around the use of "Active Sync" in the (HTC) Exchange e-mail client. Maybe someone here can chime in about manual sync with the HTC e-mail app - I'd be willing to bet that plenty of folks are using their handset as an Exchange client without "paying tribute" to Verizon.

The quote below comes from a Verizon Wireless page:

5 When you use Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync or NotifyLink, or Intellisync’s Intellisync Mobile Suite, every time you receive an email or other update you may be charged for an incoming text message. To avoid text messaging charges, you can set up timed synchronization or manually initiate synchronization.

As far as Gmail goes, you can set it up to "pull mail" from foreign mail systems, but this uses POP3. Exchange servers can be configured to allow this, but it is sort of rare to see an Exchange server set up this way to allow POP3 access. (POP3 works, but is a completely insecure protocol - most Exchange admins will not allow it).

If you can forward e-mail through Exchange, you could send it to your Gmail account.

Those are the only two scenarios for getting your Exchange mail to Gmail - neither PC-based Gmail nor Eris handset-based Gmail have any support for Exchange servers.

[Edit] It occurs to me that if your Exchange server was actually configured to allow POP3 or IMAP access from the outside world (doubtful), you wouldn't need to use Gmail in that case - you could just set up the e-mail account on the Eris as a non-Exchange account using the HTC e-mail app.

That's not the case with the Eris, I think that only applies to BlackBerry's. I had the $44.99 plan when I had a BlackBerry and connected to my employers BES. Now with my Eris, I connect directly to the Exchange Activesync server with the $29.99 plan.

I too currently have the 44.99 plan and exchange server and an ERIS. Tried to get out of if when I got my Eris but the guy said I wouldn't be able to access/sync with my exchange server. Personally I think it suck, but that is for a different post I guess. I have also heard of people dropping the plan to the $30 without any interruption in service. I did not come from a BB, but I came from a Palm and had the $44.99 plan with that as well.

I dont know how it would work, but Google/Gmail does have a sync program for outlook, you could set something up to sync your outlook (exchange) with Gmail and then it should (in theory) push the information via Gmail/Google to your phone. I would imagine you would have to eliminate you exchange email account on your phone.

Personally I like having a gmail for personal and exchange for business. Just dont like the extra 15 a month.

Just log on to your VZW account online and change it to the lower plan. They did it for me automatically when I bought my Eris. The guy even made a point to mention that I'd be saving $15 a month by switching to the Eris.

As far as any settings go, those are going to be unique to your Exchange account. I can tell you that I'm using Activesync push which gets my email real time. I don't use the Eris email app for Exchange, I use Touchdown email.

I just got the ERIS (exchanged from Motorola DROID b/c that was too bulky for me) but am having issues with my work exchange email. It worked fine for the first few days, but this morning it started having trouble. Very slow to respond. When tapping to read a new email it gives me a 'waiting screen' that says "Wed, Dec 31, 1969 7:00PM" where it would normally say the actual date and send time of the email. After about 15 seconds the message finally comes back up.

Have any of you all seen this super slowness? I came from the Treo and only used it for calendar and email. I'm really happy with this phone but if I cannot access exchange emails more quickly than this it will be useless to me. Tried searching all of the threads and this might be the best place to ask (esp. considering the discussion of the data plan service costs). Are we in agreement that you DO NOT have to have this upgraded data plan in order to access email?

I have the same situation. $29.99 plan, no problem accessing my employer's Exchange server. Calendar updates go both ways smoothly, email also.

p.s. I did have to call IT to get the correct settings, but they sent them to me right away, I plugged 'em in and was off and running. They weren't the same settings as for Outlook on my laptop.

FYI - sort of off-topic, but 7pm 12/31/1969 is Unix time zero (time = 0) in the EST time zone.

The only e-mail I have ever received email bearing that time stamp has been from spammers or malware senders - are you sure the message didn't come with a little "present" attached to it? If so, the delay might have been due to any number of factors - including antivirus software running on the Exchange server.

I get email through the Microsoft Exchange program on the phone with the $29.99 a month data plan. I will warn you though if your mail server has a security policy and/or requires a 4 digit pin the program does not work 100%. I found this out as soon as I tried to send or respond to an email. Everything else worked 100% except "Compose" and "Respond". The emails just sit in the "Out Box" and never goto the "Sent Box". To fix that problem I had to purchase an app called "Touchdown". It works great !!! I'm just still pissed off that the program that came with the phone does not work 100% and I had to pay money for an app that does the same thing. The Microsoft Exchange Email feature was the main reason I went with the Eris. O well.

I thought the same thing re: the strange time (spam), but this happens even when I open email from a trusted source that has previously been in my Inbox. It's like the standard screen that comes up while it's dragging to catch up to itself.

I did a battery pull earlier and it didn't fix. I've also played around with the settings (manual sync, etc) but no luck. Strangely the calendar is syncing just fine from the Exchange - I have gmail/Outlook/Eris all linked and they're having no problems. So the exchange is working, just the email widget is dragging.

Would deleting the account and re-initializing be a bad idea?

Is Touchdown a different email viewer altogether? I'm not sold on the built-in HTC email widget so if it is a totally different viewer altogether and you really like it I might go with that anyway (once I figure out why my exchange is dragging!).

Yes. Go to the Marketplace and search for it. There is a full featured trial version that will work for a couple of days, after that, you'll have to purchase it. It's well worth the price, I bought it after using it for 1 day.

Yes, delete your current Exchange account from your phone. Touchdown completely replaces that and has its own settings, icons, etc.

It has taken literally 6 hours to delete my exchange server from the phone. The "Mail" link finally cleared, but in Menu>Settings>Data sync>Exchange ActiveSync it still says "The account is being deleted, please wait..."

Beginning to wonder if I have a dud. Even Gmail is taking a while to load (around 20 seconds to refresh, even in 3G) and this phone was made for that. Should I even bother with Touchdown at this point or go back to Verizon for a new one?

Has anyone else experienced this kind of slowness after the December upgrade?

pleased to report i was finally able to delete my old exchange and load touchdown. very good. now just figuring out how to merge contacts with the phone and get rid of all of these unwanted Google contacts, and i'm thinking i'm going to be quite pleased!

Hi guys. I hope someone is still around. I found this thread while trying to research my question and it seems as if some of you have a similar background.

I just switched from my Blackberry to the HTC Incredible. I have an Outlook account at work that gets more than a hundred emails a day. I'm supposed to keep all of my emails on our work server, but I don't want to keep all of them on my phone. I'm trying to figure out a way to allow me to push my Outlook emails to my phone, to read and keep some of them on my phone, but to delete most of them while not deleting them from my desktop Outlook. I can't seem to find out how to do this. Will Touchdown allow for this option? If you guys keep all of your emails on your phones, doesn't that get unwieldy and eventually clog up your phone's memory?

Any advice would be appreciated.
