theft/lost

Please can you suggest a good anti theft/lost application for my X10. If it is able to return the co-ordinates/place where the mobile is, it would be great. Also it will help if it is able to erase all my private data on the phone.

Prassu, I'm glad you asked this question.

I've been searching for a good app, too. So far, I've looked at Lookout, Prey, SeekDroid, and Snuko. I see shortcomings in all of them.

If GPS isn't turned on, the locate feature is very inaccurate.

If data isn't turned on, the web site won't be able to send the stolen notification to the phone. (Prey sends a text message, but I haven't been able to make it work on my phone - LG Ally).

Most of these apps can be uninstalled without a password.

Some display on the apps menu, which I would think is the first place a thief would look to try to disarm whatever is running.

So....what's the community wisdom on all this? Do I just have to hope that the thief doesn't figure out how to disable the lost/stolen app?

If the thief was intent on stealing your phone and was adept as stealing phones, then I doubt there would be much anyone could do. And, if this person's objective was to steal your phone, not for using it personally, but to sell it, then the first thing they'd probably do is remove the sim and perform a factory reset.

If the objective of the theft was to steal your personal data, then most likely it's compromised within the very short period of time before you discover it's missing and are able to run the security app.

If the objective was to use your phone for their personal use, then it will only work until you report the phone stolen and the phone is blocked on the network. The Phone's esn and IMEI are not easy to change and would be much too much effort for one device.

The point of security apps is to get your phone back in the case of theft, or find them in the case of loss.
