New forum proposal

What I saw as an important thread was moved from the Android News & Talk forum to the Android Lounge. The thread is important security news for all android users.

I would like to propose a new top-level forum. We need an new top-level forum called "Android Security" and have security-related threads posted there instead of being in some obscure place.

I would even be willing to help hunt down security-related threads and move them to the Android Security forum if this forum is created.

Opinions?

I moved that thread I think.

I thought the News & Talk was only for stuff the bot posted (when it was posting). Agreed though, a security section may be adventageous.
Yes, you were correct in moving it. I just feel we need a Security forum so people can see it on the front page. Some folks may not assume security-related posts would be located in the Lounge, it was just by accident that I stumbled upon that thread.

That does seem to be the way it's being handled at the moment, but I'm guessing that wasn't the intention when that section was created. It seems a lot to give an entire section to a mirror image of the content on Phandroid (especially since Rob turned of the phandroid bot, albeit temporarily). Maybe that's something else that needs discussing.

Maybe replace the current (and seldomly used) "Android Enterprise" with "Android Security".. I mean, parts of Enterprise are for security reasons anyways right?

As for the thread that got moved - I think you helped members more than hurt by doing so. There is a lot more traffic that goes through Android Lounge than Android News, so you helped that thread get more views.

I definitely don't consider the Android Lounge as 'some obscure place'. (and if the bot was still posting the news articles then it would have been in that section anyway as phandroid had an article about it)

Enterprise renamed to security might work though honestly how many threads would end up in there?? (i admit there would be more than there is in enterprise now;))

As the Android OS continues to grow so will the risks of malware within Android. With more Android devices in the world there's more sensitive data being handled by them and, as such, more people wanting to get their hands on that data.

I support the idea of an Android Security forum though I suspect, in the near term, that a large percentage of the posts in this forum will be questions like "Should I install an anti-virus app on my phone/tablet?"... or "which anti-virus app is the best?".

At this point, I'm going to say that it seems as if security questions are handled in either Android Lounge or in the individual phone sections. I feel that it's ok there now, but going forward, it may not be. Just my opinion.
I agree. I don't think there'd be enough activity in a Security forum to create one

Many thanks for the replies, we have some awesome brains at work here and I'd like to add my thoughts:

I definitely don't consider the Android Lounge as 'some obscure place'
You may not, but others might.. you've been around these forums longer than new members have. I don't visit lounges in my city because it's not a place I would assume is associate with a Neighborhood Watch. I haven't really focused on the Android Lounge until I heard a mod needed some help moving posts out of there and into other forums, that's how I came to this proposal. I wonder how many others don't visit the Android Lounge and are missing security threads.

That would work, and I would be willing to continue moving security threads to that forum.

And that's ok because I would help maintain that forum if allowed. A lot of posts end up in the Android Lounge that don't need to be there and I help move those posts out.

Of course, as a team member, I'll conform to whatever the team decides. However, I feel a security forum would benefit our viewers. I've been big on computer security for years and would even be willing to write tutorials.

Just my $0.02

Often the individual phone forums will get security related news but that relies on "one of the few" finding out the information in the first place. Then you find that fixes, work arounds or advice are also handled separately.

I definitely agree that an android security forum should be added with a high visibility. Personally I would rather see a barely used android security forum, knowing it is there than not seeing one at all. Plus instead of "one of the few" its "one of the many" and all the advise is not compartmentalised within individual devices' sub communities. This can only be of benefit to everyone.

The lounge is not ideal for this as its a general forum, not even necessarily addressing android specific issues / subjects. I cant see why an android forum cannot dedicate a small bit of space to an android specific (and extremely important) subject.

It's the Android Lounge that these security threads are currently being moved to, not the general Lounge ;)

I just think security threats are a big deal. My point is that not everyone goes there and its something everyone should be aware of.

Perhaps a forum isn't the right way to go. Maybe Pop up, automated pm, sticky like site news... anything other than a lounge
Keep this in mind, if you feel that not that many people go into Android Lounge (which is true; most people go to their respective phone forums), then how would creating another forum solve this issue? That would be just another clutter-forum that people won't visit.

Pop-ups, automated PMs, etc. tend to annoy people rather than people (especially if people already know the info being presented to them). It'd be impossible to target the new comers and would drive away people familiar with Android that are here to help

How can we ensure every phone forum gets the info? Surely a site news type thing is the only way?!

Although if everyone knew there was a security forum, I think it would be visited frequently. Our problem remains member awareness to the fact there is a topic
Unfortunately, there is no easy way.

Everyone knows theres an Android Lounge and still not everyone visits it. Same could be said about a lot of the general discussion forums. Heck, people don't even visit some of the stickies that are in the forums they frequent. I don't think theres an workable solution to this issue and as such, we just have to take it on a case by case basis.

Actually El Presidente I think I moved that thead for the same reason you said. But I also agree that we need a security section.
