i downloaded apk edit so that i could edit a few icons and get rid of the text background but i dont know how to find the relevant files.
do i need another prog on my pc so that i can access the root of my phone? i already have it rooted, etc.

and also, how to change the amount of colums and lines on each page.
i know launcher does these things, but i actually prefer to use the stock ui

cheers

Yup, you need root explorer from market to be able access your system directory that holds your system apks

When you use it make sure to change mode RW from RO so the directory is writeable.

thanks blue

i already have root explorer installed, but dont i need some program on my pc to see my phones root?

all i can see is just basic files when i connect my phone to my pc. and when i open apk edit, its looking for an apk file which i cant see

no, you can't do it that way. you can navigate through the structure if you are poking around a ROM on your PC, but if you're only messing around on the device, you can only use a file explorer such as root explorer.
