Root Upgrading a Rooted Phone

I have the Droid X and when I first got it I rooted it using Superuser Permissions. I don't remember what I did, how I did it, how to act as root or what I deleted.

I have read a ton of the threads here and at other forums (including this one http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...w-reinstall-system-apps-_as_-system-apps.html and this one Does anyone have the factory visual voicemail apk?).

What I wan to do is unroot my phone, I don't need it rooted and I don't want to have to follow all these crazy instructions to upgrade. That said, I can't figure out how to unroot because every thread where someone asks how they're asked 'why?'

So if I can't unroot, then I need to know how to upgrade if I used Superuser permissions to root in the first place, the threads I read mentioned putting back files I may have deleted, but it looks to mention doing this with root manager (which might be a different app or part of the things I forget how to do with Superuser Permissions).

if you never did anything other than root the device then there is nothing to worry about. if you are trying to upgrade to gingerbread, my first suggestion is to press the menu hard key then select settings>scroll to about phone>select system update.
if you haven't changed anything in the system then when you select system update it should say updates available and just follow the onscreen instructions. this will update your phone to the official gingerbread release. This will also remove your root permissions. good luck, any other questions just ask.

Okay so I did do some things - I deleted some apps that I need to put back in to the system (or find a way to unroot the thing). I did a factory reset and I have tried before and after that to upgrade the way you suggest and it fails everytime

I would just SBF.

Then the update will come for sure.

What exactly is SBF? What will following those instructions do to my phone? Get me back to what it was when I bought it from Verizon? Or will I still be rooted and potentially screwing with things worse?

I was trying to upgrade to the new 'superuser' in hopes that i could find out the info for my root user by following this : [APP] Superuser 2.3.6.1 - Now on the Market [2010-09-05] - xda-developers but I'm not getting anywhere - can't upgrade using the market and can't 'su' at the commandline cause i don't remember a thing about the user i set up.

SBF'ing with get you back to bone stock, it will be like pulling it out of the box again. It will get rid of any problems you have, once there you can take the OTA without any problem.

Well yes, but sometimes you do have to wipe data after sbf (happened to me before).

#1 - SBF will delete everythng, if you bootloot after an SBF, there may be some extra goodies left over that it needs you to go to recovery and wipe data. Then everything will be deleted

#2 SBF returns everything to stock, factory reset isn't as efficient, SBF works even if your phone is bricked, factory reset doesn't get rid of system apps, SBF does.

You still will be A-OK to activate it on a verizon network. It takes about 60 seconds to activate.

Yup, I know my way around android like its the back of my hand, I also know a TON about the droid x, OG droid, bootloaders, sbfing, etc lol, I just decided a few days ago I wanted to give back to the community that helped me so much by helping others

That is the true open source way! I'm an open source trainer, but I train how to use library software and work with open source library software ... haven't delved in to Android at all really, so it's all new to me. It's running now ... we're at 55%

Okay, so the RSD program got to 99% and then it restarted my phone ... which wasn't in the instructions. When the phone started it remembered my last missed call and had a blue triangle at the top (roaming?). I then did a factory reset to clear the account info and such that was left over. Superuser permissions looks like it's gone and the VZ stuff is back. However, I still have the blue triangle and it says 'you don't have a network connection' when i try to link to my google account during the set up. Ideas?

You have to activate it... Dial *228 I believe, then follow instructions.

The triangle means the phone isnt activated.

Although ... superuser is still on there ... I did get it to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1 and now it's upgrading again ... so it's working, but why is superuser still there?

Not a clue, maybe you didn't wipe data after the sbf? You did say you factory reset... I'm not sure why you have superuser.

Just download a terminal emulator from the market. Type this in:
In terminal emulator:

su
sys -rw
rm /system/app/Superuser.apk

Reboot.
