Help Will Resetting Phone Remove Unlock?

So there's a possible chance that I might sell my HTC Desire HD. Just in case I do, I was wondering if there is any way I can safely remove my data, keeping the phone as new as possible (close to factory) without having to lose the unlock.

Well first of all, will doing a simple "Factory data reset" for example even disable the unlock at all?

Factory reset should get rid of data for you, but when you say "unlock" do you mean you want the phone to be unlocked to all networks?

Is your phone carrier branded? If this is the case, then the answer would be no. You'd need to root your phone, in order to unlock it to all networks... although this is not difficult, if you are getting rid of the phone, you may not want to do that... in case you do, see this link - http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/354749-how-root-install-custom-rom-desire-hd.html you wouldn't have to follow ALL steps in the link... you'd only have to go as far as the S-Off (not the END S-Off) part of the guide (as this is the step where you simunlock the phone). :)

The thing is, when I bought this phone online, it was listed as unlocked for all networks. That's why I bought it. When I received the phone and popped in my Fido SIM card, I was prompted with a code entry in order to use it. I immediately contacted the seller about it and he gave me a code. It worked ever since.

Also, when restarting the phone, I always see a Telus logo. So what does that mean? Was it ever fully unlocked from factory or was it just a Telus branded phone that I unlocked with a code?

What I'm truly asking is how can I remove all my personal data without having to fully format the phone in order to give it to someone else, or fully format it and keep the phone unlocked.

The Telus splash screen/logo when you start the phone means that it WAS branded... from what you have said (that you had to put a code in to the phone), it sounds like the person you got it from had not rooted it (which would have meant that they could get it simunlocked)... it really depends on what the code was/why you had to enter it.

It is possible to have a simunlocked phone that has a carrier logo when you start the phone - the only way for them to get rid of the logo would have been to put non-branded firmware on the phone or to use a root app that allows you to change boot animations.

What was the code for? What did it say when it asked for the code?

Ah, I honestly don't even remember. All I know is that it was an 8-digit code. I also remember seeing "limited service" on the phone when I inserted my SIM. I wish I was a little more aware of all this at the time.

Damn... erm... give me chance to have a think about it and get back to you when I get in this evening, as I'd maybe not do a factory reset (in case it asks for the code to unlock again) - that is unless you still have the code?? If you do have the code, then no probs - do a factory reset and just re-input if needed!! :)

Oh, you can do that? I do still have the code. It can be reused on the same phone? Because that would be incredible! You've been such great help :)

Don't have any experience in this I'm afraid, so wouldn't like to say yes!

I do think that you can get unlock codes relatively cheap from htccode.com or something like that!

EDIT - http://www.htccode.com/ - may be worth doing... only EUR 15 and it works (according to someone else in another thread - http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-hd/354849-htc-desire-hd-gingerbread-now-unlocked.html)

I've never heard of any kind of partial unlocking, so unless that's something I'm not aware of, you have nothing to worry about.

If your phone is unlocked, it will stay unlocked forever. You can do a factory reset and it will not affect things.

Fair enough Xyro - I've no experience with unlock codes and so I wasn't sure!

It's always best to be cautious :)

But I know from lots of reports here that it's pretty much impossible to network lock a phone by accident. I think the only time it has happened was on my previous phone, a HTC Hero, where certain radios wouldn't place nice with Orange branded phones and it showed as locked (even with orange sim cards). But even then, a new radio fixed it :)

So Xyro, you're saying I have nothing to worry about and I should be able to just factory reset the device? To be safe, I'll just go over some of the things I had to go through in order to get my phone working.

- The phone has a Telus logo appear every time upon start-up.
- First time inserting my Fido SIM, it showed as "limited service" (technically leaving me with no service).
- I was prompted with an 8-digit code I had to enter. It worked after.

So of course my questions remain;

1. Can I factory reset the phone, get someone else insert any SIM and have it work?
2. If prompted again for a code after resetting the phone, can I use the same code?

Sorry for the million questions. I just want to be absolutely sure. You guys are awesome so far.

Erm, I guess this post slipped through the net somehow. Sorry I didn't reply

But to finally answer your question; your phone is sim unlocked, end of story :) Nothing you can do will re-lock it, so the code won't be needed if you factory reset, install new firmware or whatever. Your firmware is still branded (hence the telus logo), but that's a separate issue.

(Well, I know one of the rooting tools has the power to sim unlock (I did it to mine), so perhaps that could lock it again. But it would be no biggie to unlock it again for free since you would have root ;) ).
