Optimus V getting HOT when using as a hotspot

No pun intended but I've had my phone as a wifi hotspot for five minutes to power this laptop and the phone is HOT. I mean you couldn't fry an egg on it but its warm and I'm FREAKING OUT. Will it melt my phone if I use it to run the laptop every night??

It will get hot when used as a hot spot mine does too.
When I use USB tether it does not get hot. use USB.
Or you could call Virgin and complain.

It probably won't "melt" the phone but exposing it to excessive heat will definitely stress and degrade its electronic components--which eventually would lead to premature failures and/or intermittent operational issues--e.g., random reboots, app force closes, phone lock-ups, unresponsive/slow UI, etc. Very hard to debug these kind of thermal problems... good luck.

Unless she is paying for the MiFi Hotspot, I definitely do not recommend she call VM.

what are you going to reply when they ask you "HOW" and "WHY" you're using the hotspot feature, when its not even advertised as a feature the phone has.

they might terminate your service since you violated their TOS.

I'd just use the hotspot feature for what its worth, and at your discretion, and not complain.......

I havn't used the tether feature from a widget, but I have used PdaNet which has the option in it's menu to hide the tethering activity. I had to install it on my "V" and my Laptop. I went into the menu and and enabled the "Hide Function", and it worked fine. I didn't have it on long enough for it to get hot, but it is just another option to think about( specially since VM doesn't want us to use this feature and could take some sort of negative action in the future for doing so).

Hotspot was hidden because the phone can't handle it not because they were trying to stiff us which is why it gets so hot. There's actually been an update to the other Optimus one phones completely disabling this feature.

No. Hotspot is hidden because it's against the terms of service to use your phone that way without paying for it.

Keep the phone in a cool place, put a fan on it, put it near AC, whatever.

Mine gets hot doing various things at times in my car, where it is mounted to a vent. I run AC through the vent but heat through the defrost and floor. Keeps it cool under all conditions that way.

One way or another, pay now or pay later, users would have to pay--either thru VM in compliance with its ToS, at owner's personal expense for a replacement when the phone fails, or VM price increases for everyone regardless of being user or non-user.

Might want to be cautious when placing the phone near motors since the OV is sensitive and susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI). From personal experiences, when I turn on a cheap desktop fan near my desk with the OV nearby, the phone would experience 3G disconnects consistently. As soon as that fan is turned off, the disconnects disappear and 3G data would be back to normal. Be aware, interference reeks havoc on the phone's data connection and performance--could potentially render the hotspot useless. Cooling is a good idea but do it wisely and effectively.

Interesting. I don't use the hotspot, I was speaking to more general use in my car (GPS, Pandora, etc going at once can make it warm). But that is good to know.
