Interesting battery problem

Hello all. Just bought a Droid on Sunday and am loving it! I am having a problem with the battery or possibly the device, though. Every night when I turn the phone off, no matter what level the battery is at, it's dead when I wake up in the morning. This morning I couldn't even turn it on until I had it plugged in first. I tried searching for a solution, but found nothing. I haven't tried pulling the battery or messing with anything yet. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

I would try pulling the battery at least once. Chances are something in the hardware is bad. Be sure to test anything that you can to try to find a fix quickly. If it doesn't work, just get it exchanged before your 30 days is up. Personally I wouldn't take my chances with a potentially bad piece of hardware.

Take it back and get it replaced. You can leave EVERYTHING on and it should not be dead in the morning why waste YOUR time, get another one.

It does sound like a defective phone, you should definately return it for a new one.

OK. So I went to Verizon and they swapped the battery for a new one. Since then the battery life has been better. However, last night I shut the phone down while the battery level icon was orange (I'm assuming 20% or less) just to see what would happen and it would not turn back on this morning until I plugged it into the charger. Does this happen to anyone else when you shut your phone down at 20% battery level or less? Verizon said if it keeps happening they will swap the phone out. Thanks. Mike

One, the battery will continue to deplete even at idle. If you continue to sync through the night, have the GPS, blah, blah, blah, even at idle, it'll continue to deplete battery. If your battery is at 20%, I wouldn't let it sit for 8-9 hours without being on the charger. Don't let the battery deplete until the phone can't be turned on anymore... a sure way to potentially brick your phone (see bricking experiences on the forum related to battery depletion).

Try to get into the habit of routinely charging the battery, no matter what state of charge the battery is in. Remember, these batteries have chips in them that report their state of charge. Also, when you first got the phone, did you charge it to 100% or did you just start playing with it right away?

I thought these newer batteries didn't need to be charged to 100% (conditioned)?

WHY on earth did you not tell them to replace the phone?! Get a new PHONE AND BATTERY and don't let them convince you otherwise! Than your problems will be solved, lor at least you will know if its a software issue and not hardware.

Not every time. I think that initial charge to 100% is not a "conditioning" thing as it is a calibration thing.

Actually, what he did will allow him to definitively isolate the problem. If he replaced the phone AND the battery, he would never know what the problem was. If he replaces just the battery, and he doesn't experience the problem again, problem solved: Fault with battery. However, if the battery continues to drain weirdly, problem solved: Fault with phone. Either way, the only thing he loses is time, but his mind can be at ease should the next phone bear the same problem. Everyone needs to go back to middle school science and review scientific method. One variable at a time people.

Also, when you get the new phone use it till the battery dies on its own. Than charge it to 100%. Do this twice and you will see GREAT battery life. The phone needs to "sync" with the batteries 0% and 100% mark. Trust me, do it and you will notice the difference no matter what anyone says.

I'm going to try killing all apps and putting the phone in airplane mode before turning off for the night and see what that does. It seems to have worked for some people. I'm not ready to swap the phone yet because besides this, the thing's perfect.

Oh, and Sooper, I started using the phone right away and didn't charge it to 100% first...hope I didn't screw anything up...

I had an issue like that.. turned out I had an app that I installed that drained the battery.

Ok. So last night I let the battery go to 30%, killed all unnecessary apps with advanced task manager, and put the phone into airplane mode and guess what, it WORKED!! Phone turned on normally and showed 20% which I'm guessing took some juice to start up, accounting for the 10%. We'll see if this trend continues...so far, so good.

If I do that to my phone I would have the SAME battery life I had when I went to sleep! Get another phone and battery and save yourself time, but I take it you enjoy wasting it so.... I doubt you have some app killing your battery otherwise others would be reporting the same thing. Its your PHONE, take it backl, end of story/thread!

Seriously, take it all back and get another phone and battery and you will be set. IF it happens again THAN try elimanating app by app, not the other way around.
