Root Rooting Aria with XTC Clip

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new here so please excuse the simple questions. I just got my new Aria from AT&T and it came with hboot 1.02. From everything I'm reading here, the only way to root this device is with the XTC Chip. That's fine, but for $175 I'd like to know a little more before I spend the cash.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this device will make a gold card out of my micro SD card. From there, what is the process to root the device? It came with Android 2.2.2.

Does the XTC Chip just turn S-OFF and from there I can use the unrevoked root tool? Very confused and trying to do this the right way to make sure I'm not wasting money.

Save your money and check out AlphaRev X - Coming soon...

This software will S-OFF your Aria without the need of the XTC Clip. Once you have S-OFF, you will be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery from HBOOT and then once you have ClockworkMod installed you can flash any rooted ROM you want or simply root Froyo 2.2.2 that is installed on your Aria.

OK, the AlpharevX beta is now open at:

AlphaRev X - Make it your phone

There are several posts on XDA Developers of success using this beta. You just need to make sure you have the most recent HTC Sync version loaded on your PC so that the appropriate USB drivers are installed.

Hi
I used the AlpharevX to successfully S-OFf
(in HBoot mode the screen displays HTC Aria Liberty S-off on the top....)
;-)

My HTC Aria has 2.2.2 with the "unrootable att upgrade. (using windows in VMware since AlpharevX seems to have only windows or Linux packages))

But now . . .when I try to get root using MAC version of Unrevoked ...
I ran Unrevoked (Mac OS 10.6.7) however, the final result was that
I still received the "failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?"
error msg that I had with S-On ;-(

I went back and tried running the AlpharevX again, but it refused to run
stating "your device is not supported at this time" (!!!)
Perhaps since it is already S-off (as listed in each subsequent HBoot window) it no longer (needs/can) run the fix

Can someone please tell me what am I doing wrong in trying to get root?
Thanks in advance!

(PS I di dnot see any instructions on the package, but to run the AlpharevX is pretty straight forward:

---just ensure you have latest HTC Sync installed on your windows/linux machine (i sync'd once to see that it worked).
-- disconnect the Aria
-- then unzip & run AlpharevX (add the serial number they gave you in the DOS window of the program)
--reconnect Aria (not/not in the HTC Sync mode)
-- then wait as it runs.. . . It hung up the first time for me --then I realized I started this process with my Aria in the HTC Sync mode! I killed the "dead" AlpharevX window, disconnected the Aria switched it (in the Connect to PC mode setting on the Aria) to Disk Drive (which was probably required anyway --the program seemed to switch the mode itself during the first run. then...
--reconnect Aria and re-ran AlpharevX and it ran smoothly for a minute or so until it succeeded and ended with the final line requesting to press (ore or less) any key to terminate the window (and adds a phrase this time there was no Lemonade from the lemons or something like that . . .kind of cute and reassuring!

then we presumably are to start the real rooting and then rom updates. . but that is where I fail in this. ;-(

thanks again!

As you found out, Unrevoked won't work, but here are the next steps you can follow to get you going:

Hi:

After several hours of banging away at this, I believe I have rooted the Aria.
Considering it is (was) the “updated,” “unrootable,” HTC Android 2.2 Froyo version this is really nice.

---The above link (by tpbklake) had tons of good information for doing the next step after obtaining S-Off.

-- Basically it recommended installing Android Debug Bridge (ADB) and the package to use FASTBOOT to flash the Aria ROM with the recovery.img that allows access to the SD card images and allows the rooting process to work/go forward (Ok, so that’s not a technical or precise description ;-). ADB creates the link to the phone (not just the SD card) and Fastboot uses that link to flash.

-- Loaded it all and deleleted HTC Sync while keeping the drivers, but frankly, I had tremendous problems getting the USB driver to work reliably with ADB, even after following all the steps –twice.

(In all this, it seems that the little steps matter –like when you plug in the USB cable to the phone and which setting the root menu (phone) is in, etc. . .I can see how the quick, impatient or new-to-all-this (kind of like me!) can get turned around while those who have done it before may view it as routine).

-- Anyway, I was not getting this to work and went to UNLOCKR.com and saw even more options and some programs to help troubleshoot the USB connection (that is what my problems seemed to be). . .

--But. . . before troubleshooting and replacing ADB, I installed and ran Andriod Flasher which was there and one person stated it worked for him/her. . .So I tried it and it seemed to have no problem with the existing USB connection to the phone --and it connected excellently with the phone and installed the recovery.img!

-- this allowed me then to use the “install from SD CARD” option and find the rooting program and rooted the phone (by installing "SU-2.3.6.1.ef-signed.zip" from the root directory of the SD in minutes flat!

Now, I have the SU Icon, and I suppose I can now flash new ROMs for Gingerbread or the like! What I really want to do is remove some of the bloatware –but a quick glance shows me that just having root does not enable the “uninstall” option in the ATT/HTC programs.

I Started the Super User menu option and it offers a menu option for applications, but I have not yet read up on how to clean the machine –and if I am going to flash a new ROM I wonder if I need bother to do that anyway.

Thanks to all of those who have been patiently adding helpful links and tip and while I can’t help with any of that –I can say that if I can root an Aria –so can you ;-)

one follow up on the preceding rooting of Aria.

I went and Downloaded Rom Manager and then found CyanogenMod Rom to update my HTC Aria to Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3). Using ROM Manager I cleared the cache and installed the new Rom (update-cm-7.0.3-Liberty-signed.zip)

It installed well --but then got into a boot-loop with the Cryanogen "circle" and passing androids repeating. I then HBOOTed and cleared the Cache (again) and then reinstalled from the HBOOT menu and now I have a wonderful looking HTC Aria that states the Android ver is 2.3.3. so far everything works (I think the GPS may have to have some older files flashed in. . .from scanning the log, but I will try mine first). and I do have to reload my own apps.
I am quite happy with the results and while the learning process is long -the action process to do all this is quite speedy!

thanks!
