Root Getting Laptop to connect to Adhoc connection

Ok, I rooted my phone with oneclick root, downloaded wireless tether v2.0.7, it's the only one my Dell laptop with Windows 7 will recognize. The problem is my laptop wont connect to it. Is it something on the phone end or a computer issue? Anyone else have trouble with this and find a solution. I want to be able to use my laptop when I don't have a wifi connection...any help is MUCH appreciated.

On another note, I'd also like to be able to connect my ipad and that doesn't seem to work either??? This was the whole reason I rooted, not sure I can handle puttin a custom kernal on but will consider it if it's something that must be done.

Really...I rooted my brother's evo a few weeks ago with the oneclick method and it worked with his without a kernal so I just assumed it would work for the epic as well. I'd like to keep it as close to stock as I can but I REALLY want the ability to wifi tether. Bummer...

This from the Dev website:

"This application requires a "rooted"-device and a custom-kernel which supports netfilter (iptables)!"

Of all the different things I've read I can't believe I missed this! Thank N8ster for your help. Why do you think it shows as connected on my phone with an upload and download speed? I thought it was just my computer not being able to connect to an ad-hoc network...
