Don't see the reason for a jab at Samsung. Considering the Epic is newer than the Evo, the evo would get GB first. Considering when the Epic got Froyo (delay aside), GB looks to be coming rather quick. And, seeing how the leaked GB builds are looking pretty good, I don't really see how you can knock Samsung here.

Since we are in usa (epic on sprint)...
I was asking about usa versions.

My take on this... Samsung could have released it in usa before htc.... But they are sticking to their normal MO

I think that android should just be one operating system used universally across the manufacturers, no tampering for samsung / sprint on the epic to tailor it in any way shape or form.

That way, when they do an update, it updates the android and everyone gets it at one time. No hassle, no fuss.

it can... look into Nexus line of phones.

some of us.. like the extra customization that OEMs add. if you dont.. Nexus is for you

And expandable memory, the safety of your stuff being stored on micro sb rather than a harddrive that can crash/be destroyed, front facing camera...etc...

Nexus is a great concept, but it's got great enough for me to choose it over a phone with more options.

I think he means, have vanilla Android, with no UI overlaid on top and no bloatware. I didn't interpret that as no development by the community, but ya I'd disagree strongly if he meant no development in the community... but I could get on board with vanilla Android on all phones... then let the users customize their own device how they want it from there.

I don't know if I'm being misunderstood or not but what I want is NOT like the iPhone.

I just mean all these devices are in essence running the same model of android, there are minor tweaks and protections that different carriers put on that build of android though.

I'm just saying it would be easier if they just left it alone, the current build is created and sent out to all phones on all carriers at the same general time.

You can still customize your phone as you wish and whatnot, as you can anyway with android, but I'm tired of having this amazing phone get destroyed by an inability to properly apply an update.

My phone ran perfect and smooth and great when I downloaded the FROYO build from samsung, then the pushed update from sprint OTA totally ruined it...

Other phones have GB already and working on the next build soon, yet my phone which has better hardware and a better access to the newer builds is a paperweight that plays music while I'm at work, until I get an update that fixes the problems sprint gave my phone with their version of the update.

It's terribly frustrating and sprint / samsung is slow as ever getting upgrades out there.

PS- I'll cut off my manparts before calling an iPhone mine.

I see what youre saying, however it would be near impossible with an OS that allows for open placement on any device the different manufacturers can come up with. As advancements are made in different areas such as processors, memory, GPUs etc. The OS is then modified as well to take advantage of these new advancments, at the sacrifice of older devices which may not be able to take advantage of the newer OS changes, or worse, the new OS may be detrimental to the older device.

So its not all the carriers fault, each version of android is tailored to the device its going to be on first, then the manufacturer tweaks it, then the carrier tweaks it. The only way for there to be an actual "same version" of Android across all devices would mean we would all have to have the same device ultimately.

And yeah I do agree, I wish Sprint would just give us the flat base android experience that google supplies to Samsung. However competition is fierce amongst cell phone manufacturers and especially amongst carriers. As such they are all trying to gather as much attention as possible towards their own devices, and to the normal user, the Nexus phones are pretty bland, but then again thats not who that device is marketed toward.

I'm really not impressed with the length of time they're taking to release GB. It's just another way for them to drag their feet and prolong something that we won't see for some time now.
Once we receive or if we ever do receive GB it will be old news and ICS will be released.

Sorry people I'm jumping ship and moving on to something less hassle free.

Sprint can keep their EPICS and well......I'll leave it at that.

Oh, by the way...For SALE CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP EPIC.....LOL

Moi? Nope. I experiment with other phones, but there is no way I'd leave the Epic as my daily driver. 5 row keyboard, lightweight and reliable. Have had the same one since two weeks frm launch. Ceramic tile wasn't kind to my launch one. I manage the work account so I'll play with new phones all the time and then hand them off to a rep who's ready to upgrade. A slider version of the G2x would tempt me, but it's not like I'd be chomping at the bit for it.

And I actually appreciate seeing the updates and leaks. Ii'm not expecting the world from the gb update, and I'm not holding my breath either. Practically every phone has had gb delays. And the Evo was out quite a few months before the Epic. I expect it to have updates before the Epic.

Had my doubts when I purchased the Epic. Everyone kept saying it's coming soon. LOL soon as in 6,9,11 months?

Not knocking Sammy but how long they and Sprint take is like foreverrrrrrrrr.

There are options and phones already running GB.
Only thing that keeps me away from the Nexus is no micro sd memory card. Awesome phone.

You check out the EF02Plus thread at xda development, it is a pre rooted tar. But to answer your question, no, you don't need to be rooted to update via odin and a tar file. It's not a cooked up ROM, it's just a developmental build that's not quite ready for general release yet but is still pretty stable from what I've seen. Though I can't stand the system font they use. Looks like shit.

This is correct, you do not need to be rooted to update to this via Odin. If you do Odin to the EF02 build, and wish to go back, you'd have to use Odin again to get back to EC05. Check out qbking77's videos if you want to see the process (the Odin back to EC05 is also on his channel).
