Help Starting car with phone connected

Aside from the other risks with leaving the phone in the car, are there any issues with having the phone connected to power when the car is started? Surge? Chance of damage to electronics?. My GPS is always connected and I've had no problems, and I've always been under the impression that it wasn't a problem.

not sure if it will damage your phone but the car charger i got from att says to unplug the charger from the car before starting and turning off vehicle.

I just looked at the info that came with my charger and it basically says the same thing, unplug it when not in use. Don't know if that's to prevent damge to the charger itself or the phone. Obviously, the safest thing is plug it in after starting.
