backing up captivate

so i have to root my phone before i do any kind of backing up?

That is my understanding, and why I did it. There really should be an iTunes types program that saves app info, songs and settings for Android.

I could be wrong but from all the reading I did, it seems to be the only way. You can back up contacts without rooting, but phone data is another issue.

Someone feel free to correct if I am wrong on this

Unfortunately, it's the only way for the backup program can get at all your data in order to back it up.

There is a limited amount of data you can back up if you aren't rooted and don't want to root, but it's far from a complete backup and you might be unhappy with the amount of missing data and work you're left with should you need to do a restore.
