apps taking up memory

I have noticed the slow down and went in and deleted what I really do not need. All I can say is go into your applications in the settings menu and look at the size, I have noticed that some are serious hogs on space.

i don't have a G1 to verify, but as far as i know, g1 has only 128 mb of internal memory that is solely dedicated for apps.

you cannot install apps on your SD cards. SD cards are for music. and videos. and maybe apps in the future???

I'm seriously hoping that they come out with a firmware upgrade that allows you to install stuff to the SD card. It's insane that they come out with this great app store, and don't even give us enough memory to use a lot of the applications on it...

From what we understand theres nothing standing in the way of this being possable. Other then, you know, an update...

I just came across an app that allows you to save apps via sd card, it's called app installer i believe however i read the comments and they didn't seem promising atleast not to me. If that isn't the app i'm sure one will be made available soon. I notice new additions everyday. I'm always uninstalling apps on a regular as well.

No, the App Installer in Marketplace has nothing to do with running apps from the SD Card. All it does is allow you to install an app from an .apk file that is already on your SD Card. The app still installs to the phone's memory. This is handy if, for example, you needed to install an app without a network connection. Other than that, it's not of much use.

IMO, this is the most needed update to the phone at the moment. I too am running very low in memory. I have an 8gb sd card installed that is just begging to have apps on it. The devs had to know that this was going to become a big problem very quick.

I slowed down to a crawl since I was app happy and "had to try this and that" but to me that was the point as least for now to try and see what programs were great for me and what was not.

I removed like 10 apps and got back to 18mg and now it is fast.

I might add some apps back as I need them since that process is usally pretty fast but yes apps to sd card would be great but I think we all need to be vocal to where you got the phone so they go back to r/d and let them know now that this is needed. R/d is not neccasairly reading this forum but would hope they were.

I think the big problem with this will be that the intent resolution system will have to track which apps are presently available based on the card that's in the slot. If a message comes in for your chat app and you've switched out the SD card then it's going to struggle to do something sensible.

I expect more likely is that games and larger apps will keep their data files on the SD card and their binaries on the internal memory. I think that could be done today if the app developers wanted to

I'm assuming that the list of current applications is kept in a sqlite database, and assuming there is a db entry that has the path of the application (and the version), you could simply check for older versions of the software in the database, and if it finds any, simply remove the path in the database and install a the new version (to SD or Internal memory), writing the new path/version to the database.
If the memory card is taken out, you could either allow the person to put the card in, install the new version and when the (correct) card is plugged in, remove the version on the SD, or just let them opt out of the install untill the card is back in.

Alternatively we could just have programs store a minimal binary on the phone's internal memory and have all the data files on a SD card (tied to a unique ID so you can't put other cards in and have it try to load data up).

This can't be too hard to do as Palm devices have been functioning just fine with storing programs on the SD card for some time now. When you pop the SD card out the programs are just not available.

Hey does anyone know how to manually uninstall applications that were not installed from marketplace? I installed touchdown manually but i dont know how to uninstall it..Any help that would be great!!

It can be done now if you root the phone ... the solution is not eloquent but will work ... The utimate solution is up to google ... and that is anybody's guess ... but if G1 is to remain viable for the near future ... limiting apps storage would be a huge miscalculation ...

While it might seem odd to us, carriers also get a pretty big say in things like this too. I never understood that since other models in the same carrier often will have the functionality.

I have a SE 990i and it offers to allow you to store apps or any downloads to the phone memory or to the memory card ... makes no difference to the carrier ... where you run your apps from ....

I know that, you know that, and often the carrier knows that too. For some reason they like flexing their muscle when an OS gives them options to do so. Meaning in your current phone/OS the option to NOT allow this function doesn't exist. Some Google or HTC exec showed off the ability to limit the phone to Tmobile and they jumped on it. This is actually common behavior. Sidekicks have had the ability to MMS for years but in the US this is pretty new, for some reason early versions in the US were limited by Tmobile.

Data cost fears? Customer service fears? Hoping to upsell that feature to us at a later date? Who knows, but it does stink.

I do hope Google's muscle can make the shift, but in the end the carrier controls a lot more than people think.

For memory .... on the G1 this is not a carrier issue ... it is a pure OS system choice ... Google has segregated apps into three classes and has set up directories for their storage, 1st is the native apps that come on the phone .... those apps have access to the OS that other apps are not allowed, 2nd is the directory for paid apps ... this is a locked directory just like the 1st, then there is the third for free apps and third party apps.... not restricted to copying or install outside the confines of the MarketApp which Manages apps from the AppMarket ....

Does TMO have any benefit from requesting Google to limit app storage ? ... No!! in fact in the long run this will be a purchase killer for both of them, at least as the G1 is concerned ... in will also raise the question of future units as to their app-memory limits ...

Just think by the end of 2010 SanDisk says they will have a 2TB .. yes TeraByte SD card ... this is enough space to last us a life time ... would I buy another phone that limits app storage to the whim of the OS developer and/or the Carrier .... absolutely Not !!!
