Hello,

I'm a newcomer and interested to root my htc Evo. However, I happen to update the software (v. 2.3.3) last Saturday, and I read a few threads saying that there is no way to root the phone after updating to Gingerbread.

I'd like to get some information to:
- To return the software back to the original
- To root the phone

Thank you for your kindness

Joy

Longer answer, due to the fact that with the OTA came a new bootloader update it will not allow you to return to an older version without being rooted. The new bootloader(or hboot) has not been rooted yet so you will have to wait for that to be accomplished. It is only a matter of time, though how much is uncertain.

WOW, this sucks. Is there any way Sprint can roll my phone back to 2.2 for me if I take it to the Sprint store and complain I don't like the gingerbread update?

No. HTC might be able to but the RUU that would flash froyo checks to see if it is downgrading the current software. Sprint has tried on a couple that I know of without success.

I returned my Evo 4G today to Best Buy because I complained about the voice call quality (semi-true) and they gave me a new one. Thankfully it had stock Froyo and I declined to upgrade to Gingerbread. Now my voice-to-text works again and no issues whatsoever! I'm sorry folks but IMHO, Ginger sucks. I left Verizon last month (and my Droid X with it's nightmare problems after Ginger) and went to Sprint because their 4G rocks in Southern California and Sprint's pricing was much better. I have to say I'm happy with Sprint and now my Evo too. So, it appears that all new Evo 4Gs out of the box have Froyo.

I would have to say that the fact that you got Froyo on a new Evo is a rarity and you are one of the lucky ones. All that are shipped out new or refurb are coming with 2.3.3. I verified this the other day with a tech at a sprint corporate store near here. There are a few floating around still that have froyo but most have 2.3.3 on them now.

Yep I was holding my breath until he took it out of the box. Told him "Don't upgrade to Ginger" after I verified it was 2.2. Pleased I am :)

Dang you are a lucky SOB. I got my replacement like two weeks ago. The guy at Sprint told me it had Froyo but of course it didn't. Luckily the rumblings on XDA indicate that we're close to rooting the new hboot so it's just a waiting game at this point, with a light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully it is released quickly. I want my AOSP back.

I am lucky. I was definitely surprised because I was told at the store it would come pre-loaded with 2.3.3 Now, there's some good stuff about Ginger that would make the Evo better but, until they patch the crap out of it, I'm relieved I got my grubby little hands on a new 2.2 right outta the box.
