the bottom dock has a blank/transparent .png in the middle to launch the app drawer and on the right there is a swipe gesture to show/hide notification bar. (i've been using LP+ forever so i know where they are by instinct now)

Yes, but you can reproduce almost anything in this thread without rooting. (Through Launcher Pro and the like)

Rooting is not necessary for customizing. If you just want to change how the phone looks, try WidgetLocker as a lockscreen replacement and LauncherPro or ADW Launcher as a replacement home launcher. Pick any random clock widget (Beautiful Widgets, Fancy Widget, Make Your Clock Widget, Minimalistic Text) or Desktop Visualizer to make custom icons and you can go crazy... all without rooting.




All of this... not rooted.

Just about all of the screenshots in this and other forums show different apps, widgets, and wallpapers. Whether or not they are rooted, they all use basically the same customization features.

Rooting does allow additional options for visual customization such as changing system fonts and colors as well as customizing pop-up menus and notification areas. But if all you want to do is change how your lockscreen and homescreen look and function, this is easy enough to do without rooting. There is so much you can do without being technically inclined. You can't break it. Don't be afraid to change things. But most important... have fun with it!

The only thing to worry about is how much time you'll spend customizing the device. It's quite addictive.

Here's a PG version, it was time to update anyway. The rom is Warm 2.2 with my customizations all over it, I've got almost everything blacked out with no gradients now and I'm making all system icons white, working on the sense clock app now.

There are threads discussing pros/cons of rooting, i suggest this conversation be taking there, but in a more respectful manner than it has been going up till now.
