[APP] GrooVe IP - Google Voice VoIP

Hey there snrb!

Thanks for the great app!!! I'm a soldier currently deployed to Kuwait and this is just so awesome for me! I currently have a Droid X and am using your app strictly over wifi. I can make calls just fine, but when people call me I get no indication that someone has called. I read a few threads saying that you had to be logged out on all computers or else it would go there first, so I made sure I was fully logged out. Still no dice :(

Now when I setup my Google voice account tonight it asked me to put a phone number in for call forwarding, unfortunately since I am overseas and unable to confirm my phone number through google voice calling me, I can't "finish" the google voice registration at this time. Do you think its possible that this is the issue? Just for some information, when I call people they get the google voice number that I chose, even though my google voice registration isn't fully complete yet. So I know that's working at least....

Anyway, any thoughts on that? thanks!

Thank you for the great app!

I am using this on a Virgin Mobile Optimus V. For those of you also using it on an Optimus can I ask if you have fiddled with the audio settings (volume, mic gain) or troubleshooting settings? I had a lot of echo when I called my wife on her old iPhone, but it seems to work better (but not perfect) when I called other phones. Before I change too much does anyone have a profile for settings they would recommend on the Optimus?

Also I seem to have a lot of trouble when I try to use my wired headset and Groove IP. My wife tells me she can't hear me at all, or there is static. Is this a common problem or perhaps just related to the headset I am using?

Thanks again -- this app is great and I just want to see what I need to do to get reasonable and consistent audio quality with the calls.

Any suggestions on why how to fix this problem. When I restart my G2 I have Groove to start auto and it starts up but if it disconnects and the icon turns red it will not start again, I goto the app and and tell it to log in and it won't login and go green. Even if I goto the app running and tell it to stop it removes itself from the running services but the icon on the top of the screen stays red and does not go away. The only way I can restart it is to e shut the phone down and restart it then it starts back up on its own and is good till it disconnects again. I can not get it to re-login to google. Any suggestions.

Thanks,
Shuttle

Check your battery profile. Data might be set to go into power saving when the screen turns off or the phone is idle. That would cause the app to disconnect. Also if you have any task killers or battery managers like juice defender. Those can also cause it. Or if you've moved the app to the sdcard, sometimes that causes problems.

SD card - Settings, Applications, Manage applications, On SD card: not listed.
I had a task killer but I uninstalled it because the Galaxy does a pretty good job of managing it's apps. I never loaded a battery manager, I don't have a problem with the power use.
I found the Data power saving setting a ew days ago but I can't remember where. They were not set to where it should cause a problem.

I beleive you are going to fix the other problem I spoke of, and Shuttle is talking about above, in the update you are releasing this weekend. If it doesn't resovle it i will report more info.

Hi,

Yes you won't be able to get incoming calls until you complete the registration. After you complete the registration you can uncheck forwarding to the number you provided and forward calls to google chat. That will allow the app to receive calls.

How long are you in Kuwait for?

What's the maximal Keep Alive interval allowed by the protocol and Google Talk implementation? The 50 second interval hard coded in the app kills the battery in no time over 3g. Options to specify Keep Alive intervals over wifi and 3g may help.

There's nothing defined in the spec. The keep alive shouldn't really use very much battery life. It should only be a few packets in each direction.

That's a bug we've fixed in the next update. You can restart the app and that should fix it. Exit the app with menu->exit when you are in the app.

I have been trying to find something like this for a long time....Just tried it and within minutes it is working!!! Thank you so much!!!!

If you guys like the app, please consider giving us a 5-star review wherever you purchased. It really helps us.

You can reduce echo by lowering the speaker volume and mic gain.

That's certainly a good wish, and would be better if it is true. How about a simple Google search to get a feeling of the power consumption of "a few packets" that are repeating if you do not have time to experiment on your own app...

Wow...not sure what I did to deserve such hostility. I'm sorry if my reply wasn't satisfactory.

The keep alive is one packet in each direction with one ack in each direction. The spec doesn't define an interval. We put it at 50 seconds after some experimentation when initially developing the app. After your initial suggestion I added revisiting the interval to see if we can expand it or make it configurable to our task list. I write down every suggestion that people give us so we don't lose track of anything. With that said I don't expect that changing the keep alive will reduce battery usage by a significant amount. I very well could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

We're always looking for ways to improve battery performance. We've made some enhancements for the next version that should improve things. Does GrooVe IP show up in your battery managers list? What percentage are you getting for usage?

I really resent your comment of not having time to experiment on our own app.

Gave you a 5 star and wrote up a good review. I was hesitant to buy this app before trying it but this forum sold me to give it a shot. Too many apps do not do what they claim to do and the developers are not there for you. I am very happy to say that is not the story here....:D

Just did.

Do you think my headset problems are with my particular headset or a general issue? I need to borrow a friends earphones and see if they work any better.

I don't know of any issues with wired headsets. I'll take a look and see. If you do try a different pair please let me know if they work any differently.

I purchased the app a couple days ago but so far haven't been able to make or receive a call. I'm sure with all the great help here, we can get it working.

I have a Droid X2, and I haven't seen any mention of it in this thread. Does anyone know if there are issues with the X2?

I use Google Chat (on my PCs) frequently to both send and receive calls, so I know I've got Google Voice properly set up. Only Chat is selected as a call Forward target.

I think I initially had the same trouble as Shuttle (post 459). I was able to log in right after I bought the app, but never again. I just tried Menu>Exit, then restarted GrooVe IP, and the icon is green again. Yay!

Both times, when I first bought the app and just now, I've had the same experiences using this app:
-Calling: The phone rings, but when the other phone is picked up I hear a odd noise and then then silence. The call doesn't end, but I don't hear anything on either end. The noise is like a "ch-ch-ch-ch"; tough to describe with just a keyboard.
-Receiving: The phone doesn't ring. I've signed out of Google Chat everywhere else, and closed the browsers on all my devices. I made an initial call though Chat, as recommended in the FAQ. Is there something else to try?

Please see my post above.

I'm connected to my WiFi home network. The Speedtest.net app says I usually get at least 1.1Mpbs down and 0.4Mbps up, so I have the bandwidth for quality voice calling.

My X2 has a non-defeatable Task Manager so I unfortunately can't just turn that off as a diagnostic tool. I assume others with the Motorola Task Manager aren't having any problems making and getting GrooVe IP calls?

I just tried enabling Outgoing Audio Processing and made another call. The dialing screen opened, and then the phone seemed to die! The phone didn't respond to any buttons, even holding the power button. It was like the phone was off and wasn't coming back on.

I set down the phone and a few seconds later the hard buttons lit up and the dialer showed the call still being dialed, but the call was never connected. Could this be something specific to the Droid X2?

The phone does seem to be just fine now, but it gave me a good scare. I haven't tried to place another call.

- Fix problems with sign-in
- Improve app stability
- Create a sign-in screen with error reporting
- Calls to 911 from the native dialer should always use the mobile network never GrooVe IP
- Default bluetooth to on if a bluetooth device is synced
- Remove Flurry Analytics
- Make GrooVe IP contact list searchable
- Add app version to the help
- Try to obtain WIFI_MODE_FULL_HIGH_PERF lock
- Add a dial prefix configuration
