Help Android Nav & Bluetooth - audio directions

I was just curious if anyone has run into issues with the audio directions not working? I've tried twice and not had much success. The first time, it started out saying "Turn right and continue 3...". No additional voice prompts came. The next time it did not ever offer turn information. The navigation volume is set to the maximum value.

Is it likely getting confused with my handsfree bluetooth in my car? (2011 Hyundai Sonata) I can make calls over bluetooth just fine. I can also stream mp3's if I start them up, they play over the car's speakers. The navigation just seems to go silent. I thought maybe the pairing had not taken place yet and that's why I got 5 seconds of audio the first time I jumped in, started the car and was pulling out of a parking lot.

I'm not sure what to try. Should I disable bluetooth and see if it works? Should I just delete the phone from my car or car from my phone(unpair)? Maybe I need to tune in the "aux" channel on the radio and just play mp3's while I navigate?

Thanks!

I have had no issues to this point, but I have only used it three times, yesterday. I played music as I drove. The Google Navigation stopped the music, gave me directions, then resumed the music. This is my same experience I have had on the 4G and the MyTouch 3G as well.

I generally start the Nav after I have the other programs running. I will test a couple things on my way home from work Monday.

I guess I confirmed what the problem was, it is something with bluetooth. I disabled it on my phone before getting in the car and navigation voice worked as expected. On my return home, I enabled bluetooth for hands-free with the car, and it again failed. I tuned in the Aux setting for mp3 play, and the navigation directions were coming in fine over the car's speakers.

It's going to be pretty annoying, I'd like to be able to use my XM satellite radio on road trips AND have navigation speak to me so I don't have to look at the screen so often. It seems poor to require the MP3 audio source to get navigation prompts.

I know on my E3D there is no issue with the bluetooth portion. I stream my music on my phone via bluetooth connection to a Motorola T505 that transmits the sound to a set frequency on my radio. The music cuts off when directions are given then resumes once directions stop.

I don't know what to tell you. Sorry for the issues happening to you.

Ah yes, sorry I forgot to point that out. I, too, would like to use my iPod for travelling and have my navigation kick in when needed. So, instead, I use Pandora when road tripping.

But, I think there is a solution for you, the official XM radio app: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.sirius&feature=search_result

I have the same car as the OP, and I confirm this problem. It happened on the Evo 4G as well. If you stream music via BT, the navigation doesn't go to the car speakers. If you use nav by itself, it DOES go to the car speakers.

Not sure if/why this is a limitation, but I don't think it's the car. Android can't seem to handle multiple audio sources through BT. I know that iOS does this fine.

Another thing Android can't do is play your ringtone through the car if a call comes in. My car makes its own chime when it detects the call. Wife's iPhone will cause the car to play her ringtone.

And while we're tangentially talking about the 2011 Sonata, the contacts appear LAST name, FIRST name, and you can't switch the order. And when you use the car's voice dialing, you have to say the name LAST, FIRST. really annoying, but this is the car's problem, not Android.

In regards to your first paragraph, do you mean simultaneously doesn't go through the speakers? That I would agree with, but I have no issue with streaming music and using Nav. The Nav stops the music on my phone and gives me updated instructions and then resumes the music when I am done.

In regards to the audio portion, I have played music simultaneously from the default music player and Winamp. Granted, the first time was an accident due to the Motorola BT T505 initiating both programs simultaneously, but it did happen. After that , I tested the programs to see that they were capable of accessing the same files at the same time with no distortion. It worked, although there was little point to it.

I took an opportunity to test something out today. I used two radios in a couple different cars from some friends at work.

I used my phone paired to a T505 Motorola radio transmitter to keep those things constant and then sent that transmission to the radio of each car. The music played fine on each system. Then I lit up navigation and here is where things differed.

On the first one, the stock radio in the car, the music paused, but no sound issued, then the music continued. It took me a minute to realize the navigation was giving out turn-by-turn directions, but the transmission was not making it to the radio.

On the second one, a Kenwood DVD touch screen system that my friend went all out on installing (woofers, speakers, box in the back) the music paused and a very low sound could be heard, and then the music resumed.

On each, I tested a variety of things, including making certain all volume settings were at max (navigation, media for example). In the process of changing destinations in order to restart the nav feature and start directions anew, I moved the phone closer to the transmitter, closer to the radio and then at a mid point as well. Then I did the same with the transmitter.

Neither action ellicited sound from the stock radio in the first car. Only when I moved the transmitter closer to the radio of the Kenwood could I hear the directions being given. However, the sound itself was still not on par with that of the music being played.

End result? I think the issue lies in the stereos themselves, not the phone. Again, I have had no issues with sound over the stock radio in my '09 Malibu when using music and nav, but there does appear to be some kind of miscue somewhere along the line.

Has anyone found a solution?
I'm using a HTC desire. If I connect to my car's bluetooth, the navigation voice doesn't work. Even if I'm not streaming music from my phone, just being connected to the Car's bluetooth disables the navigation audio.

If the phone is not connected to BT, the navigation voice is heard through the phone's speaker.

I read somewhere that it's suspected to be a problem with HTC??

Any clues?

cheers

It's a known issue that pops up with bluetooth and when playing music through the headphone jack. Some gingerbread bug. see here.....

Issue 15690 - android - Navigation volume very quiet - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

I sure hope they fix this soon. Also i noticed that when i play music, and try to use voice search, it no longer cuts out the music like it did in android 2.2, it just blasts music over the voice search... Sounds related to me.. maybe not.

I would agree with most of the comments in here. I set my Google Navigation today and it started giving turn by turn directions until my phone connected to the car bluetooth then it was silent. I am going to do some experimenting over the next few days to see if I can get it working.

I am using and S3 and the navigation voice works fine, I get into the car and start up, the phone connects to the in car bluetooth then I get no voice direction. If anyone has any idea how to sort this out give me a shout.

Has anyone found a solution?

Don't know if this will help but I played around with it today if I get my navigation voice to come through BT Aux it works perfectly.

I realize the last post here was over a year ago, but I've got a 2011 Sonata and a Galaxy S III just like the OP -- and lo and behold, I have the same issue.

When my phone is connected to my car, I have to specifically stream media from my phone to get voice directions. If the radio is on instead of streaming media, or if I have no music in my car at all, I don't get voice directions. If I disconnect from Bluetooth, The phone starts giving me directions again.

When I pair my phone and my car, the phone works fine. I can use hands free regardless of whether I'm streaming media or not. But the navigation requires that I play the phone's media through the car.

But -- even worse -- it's not consistent! There has been at least one situation in recent memory where I connected the phone and called my wife, while the navigation talked out of my phone's speaker. This is how I would like it to always work.

What am I missing? Is there a setting to make the Google Voice not use Bluetooth? Has anyone gotten this to work correctly?

EDIT: Follow up. Well, I found a work-around. I selected the Bluetooth option to only pair the phone with the car, and not the media. This way I can still have a hands-free phone, but the navigation comes from the phone and not the car's speakers.

I can't play my phone's media through the car audio now -- but it turns out that doing that disabled the car's phone connection anyway. So, I guess this is the least worst of the options.
