Help Help- cant get yahoo account set up on EVO 3D - Fool's Errand

This is an OLD issue with the Android OS...

To my knowledge the Yahoo Servers are NOT imap servers, if it's working with those settings, that is crazy news.

I have NO problem with my Yahoo accounts at all. You must go and set up an new account and when you do, go to MANUAL Setup and take off the IMAP setting, then change the incoming and outgoing settings as such...

Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465)

Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995)

If you have a PLUS account you can use these...

Yahoo Plus Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995)

Yahoo Plus Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465, use authentication)

Try those settings and see how it goes.

:)

Tried this too and no go. Crazy. It worked fine on my evo. Wonder what the malfunction is.

Crazy is now mine is not working either... lmao! RATS!!!

I looked and the settings somehow reverted to IMAP, I attempted to change them back and I'm getting authorization errors now. Hmmmm, wondering if they're doing something on the Yahoo side? Anyways...

You COULD use your Gmail account to FETCH the yahoo mail and bring it into the Gmail account. I never used this feature but I do know you CAN do this. Search here for some threads on that subject (Phandroid) if you want to try that. For me it's ok, I have nothing critical on the Yahoo account.

UPDATE...

Ok, its working again... on the E3D just use NEW account function (Yahoo Mail) and it works again.

Was trying all sorts of configs that were failing, maddening... lol, it had to be THEM!

Regards
:)

interesting htc said that. i had yahoo working just great on the evo and thus far yahoo has been working well on the 3D.

i know yahoo sent out an email a few weeks ago saying i needed to update to yahoo plus or some such so maybe once this is in place at yahoo perhaps the accounts will stop working in the native app.

i dont use yahoo hardly and installing the yahoo mail app is a resource and battery hog so its not worth to for me to install that.. ill just use my xoom to access yahoo or just use the web based yahoo.

i also agree it may be how one's email settings are set up online...

I was a little surprised by HTC'c response as well. I agree with your later post that the info I got from HTC may not hold much water. I made the call to HTC on a Sunday afternoon. I'm sure their most knowledgeable tech's were not the one's answering the phone at that time.

Personally for me I check 2 yahoo accounts, 1 exchange account, and 1 POP3 account. I know to some that seems a little cumbersome but it is the way I work. It is the result of being self employed and needing to check email accounts for a few of my clients. I want to be able to check these all in the same app. Call me stubborn but that is what works best for me. Don't take this the wrong way but I can do it on my iPhone.

All that being said. I really want to make the move to android and away from AT&T. Is there any other app out there that someone can recommend to check multiple email accounts including exchange and yahoo in the same client? Someone over on the sprint forum suggested using K-9. Anyone have any experience with K-9 as an email client?

TIA,
Matt

UPDATE: I tried K-9. Good news: It works with both my yahoo accounts. Bad news: it does not work with active sync which is what I need for the exchange account on a third party exchange host.

Ok I deleted my Yahoo account and re added it. I just opened up my mail and i had no circle with numbers but mail form this morning was all there nothing was bold like unread and I had just woke up and hadn't even read my mail yet. I then relaized a while back I set up my Incredimail (similar to outlook) on my main computer to have my yahoo download there. But it was like that when Yahoo was working on my EVO 4G. And I used to have to still go to Yahoo and delete all my mail even though it came through my Incredimail but here lately it's not there for me to delete. So maybe it's a setting that got messed up I am not sure. I just went to Yahoo and usually I would go there every 2 or 3 days and delete lots of old mail I had already read on Incredimail. And today nothing was there but morning mail. I may try to delete the account from Incredimail and see if that makes a difference. But I just sent me a test and I opened up yahoo and it said 3/3 and they downloaded but I want them to be bold for unread till I click on them but maybe since they download to my incredimail 1st that is why? I don't know..

If you're having problems, I highly recommend using K-9 Mail (free, open-source app in the market). I've been using it for IMAP on my Yahoo account since my G1 and I still use it today on my 3VO. It supports multiple accounts, color-coded accounts, unified inbox, etc. And, as of a few months ago, it will save downloaded email on your SD card.

One other thing to note: if you're not a Yahoo "Plus" user (meaning you were given "Plus" by your ISP or your paid Yahoo), as far as I know, IMAP will not work and you have to use POP3, unfortunately. This would completely explain the scenario where you can use SMTP, but not IMAP.

Well my Yahoo is working now. I figured it out! I just needed to close out my Incredimail completely and not let the mail download to it 1st. Cause once I close it out I now see a circle with a 2 and my emails are bold like they should be for not reading them. So I need to remember to close out my Incredimail when I leave my house I usually leave it open in my task bar and mail downloads to it. So I'm fixed now and am working even with the htc part in my settings.

I got a new forum email which I can read but the test message I just sent to myself from Incredimail all it said was test in the subject and body and when I opened it I got a message saying this mail is still on server. But I am sure that is a setting someone explained that to me somewhere in this thread above. But I am working now so that is all that matters.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe POP3 will presents other issues for those who check the account in multiple places. For example, If you reply to an email from the phone it will not be in sent items in the webmail client. Deleting messages via the phone will not remove them from the server. My Yahoo accounts are working as IMAP in K9 without issue so far. I am not a Yahoo Plus user.

Using K-9 I was able to authenticate and retrieve my Yahoo mail using the IMAP settings. As a free account user they're rejecting my POP queries, even to the servers posted on page 1 for free users. Using the same settings in the stock mail app I can authenticate, but can't actually retrieve any mail.

Unfortunately my workplace just upgraded to Exchange 2010 and K-9 isn't playing nicely with that. Thus I'm left using multiple mail apps.

Contacted HTC and Yahoo, waiting to hear back from both of them. It has to be something on one of their ends, or a bug in the app.

EDIT: Yahoo has apparently escalated my ticket, hopefully more will come of it!

You're absolutely right (which is why I said "unfortunately"). I hate POP3! ha.

AS for IMAP on a non-Plus account, that's great! I had no idea Yahoo opened that up. Back in my day (wink), that wasn't permitted. Actually (thinking out loud) it MAY be that Yahoo only permits it for non-plus accounts over a carrier connection (i.e. Sprint) and that it won't work for non-Plus users over WiFi. I seem to remember them trying that out as a compromise to not allowing IMAP at all. Do you know if I'm right or if I'm full of it?

Thanks!

Pretty sure they allow both. Coming from an iPhone I could use Yahoo! IMAP on edge/3g and wireless at home and work. Never had any problems. On the Evo3D I have the same issue regardless with the same symptoms. Thinking it's just open altogether.

Now POP I know is at least somewhat restricted to Plus users. There's another FAQ about that if you dig in the help section of your inbox.

Yahoo posted some limited info at Yahoo! Mail for Android.

LOL. I suspect our days are not that far apart. ;) I'm no POP3 fan either. I always thought that Yahoo had locked down both IMAP and POP3 unless you were a plus account. I assumed this was an effort to keep people from using a POP3 client to check the account and avoid all the marketing. I guess they had to open IMAP to some extent to work with mobile devices. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it is over WiFi or 3G. I actually tried the one account on a buddies EVO 4G lat night. Same result. No workie. His yahoo account works just fine on his phone and has for almost a year.

I am starting to wonder if yahoo maybe classes the free accounts as business or personal. The account that works for me is pretty obviously for personal use. It would be just as easy to determine that the account that has the issue is more business use. Both of these account are pretty old. One I set up for my business when I first got started and Yahoo was the best free alternative with a web mail interface. Perhaps they let the "personal" through and not the "business" accounts. Just grasping at straws here.

My communications with HTC.

Me:
I have a new HTC EVO 3D. I can not get my yahoo email account to work. It just says "No Mail". I have a second yahoo email account that works just fine. My wife and I both have the EVO 3D. This account does the same thing on either phone.

HTC:
I understand the importance of being able to use your Yahoo email account on your HTC EVO 3D. I will be more than happy to assist you with this. Yahoo's mail service and Android are not fully compatible with each other. Due to this, Yahoo has made an application specifically for Android to bypass these problems. You can find the application on the Android Market by searching Yahoo. I do apologize for any inconvenience.

Me:
Unfortunately the Yahoo app is not an acceptable solution to me. I check 4 email accounts. Two are yahoo, one exchange, and one POP3. I am self employed and these accounts are how I run my business. One of the yahoo accounts works just fine. The other does not. My wife and I are both trying to make the move from AT&T and the iPhone to Sprint with an android phone. Having to use multiple applications to check my email accounts is a deal breaker. Is this something HTC and Yahoo are actively seeking to fix? Is this an issue with all android phones or just with HTC and yahoo?

HTC:
Thank you for your response. This is a compatibility issue between the Android Operating System and Yahoo's servers. As for a fix, the one that was developed was the application that Yahoo put on the Android Market. Unfortunately, we do not have any alternative to this to make the device compatible with Android. I do apologize for any inconvenience.

As a side note. I went into a verizon store and set the same account up on a Motorola Droid X2. Initially it was the same issue, "No Mail". The salesperson changed a setting and all my messages showed up. She said she turned on push but I can not find a setting for push on the EVO 3D.

I have tried all the things all of you try. Either it can't connect to the server for some reason or if it does connect there is still no mail. I hate that damn yahoo app. I am sure they blocked us from using the native application just to force us to use their damn app. Many have to find the time to change all my crap to my gmail account but damn I am old and have had that account since yahoo cam out with email. This blows!

OK this blows harder than it thought. I wrote htc today about this yahoo crap and they wrote a back and told me it is yahoo an they want you to use their applications. I don't have Internet at home so all is use is my phone. I would copy and paste their message for everyone to read but that piece of shit app won't let you copy and paste. I am now really irritated with this. OK i am Pissed. Damn yahoo!

Dear Aaron,

I understand you are unable to access Yahoo email on your EVO 3D. I know this can be very frustrating. Recently Yahoo made some changes where there IMAP servers will no longer work and you have to set up the email using a POP account. Also, the only Yahoo accounts that will work with POP are the Yahoo Plus accounts. You can go to My phone has a mail application. How do I get my Yahoo! Mail messages in it? | Yahoo! Mobile Help for further information about this. Recently there was an application added to the Android Market so you can still use your Yahoo email. This should allow you to continue to use your Yahoo account. Please keep in mind that any applications from the Android Market are 3rd party content and we do not support these.

Interesting. That is a little different than the reply I got. If you follow that link toward the bottom of the page there is a link to:
Yahoo! Mail for mobile

On that page there is an IMAP tab. on that IMAP tab there is a link for android specific IMAP settings.... yet those setting still do not work.

Seems like a whole bunch of finger pointing to me. :HeadScratch:

Not any more. It used to be you had to have there paid plus or whatever it was but now my Yahoo comes right through my Incredimail where all my pop accounts come.

Hmmm. I understood POP for Yahoo requried their paid service.

My settings -
IMAP protocol
htc.imap.mail.yahoo.com(incoming)
htc.smtp.mail.yahoo.com(outgoing)
SSL on both, default ports
email=username=yours@yahoo.com

Just selected Yahoo! mail in HTC client, nothing fancy. No issues.

proxy does not play a role. I have set it up with and without proxy changes EM posted in the streaming thread and i have not seen any difference one way or the other.

I think the HTC guy is right in that yahoo is phasing out the use of their servers with other mail apps and wanting others to use their own app. just my theory..
